Principal’s Report

Congratulations to Kerry and Robyn in the school canteen who last Friday received an award from NSW Health (Live Life Well) acknowledging their work on providing a “Healthy Canteen” at Manly Vale Public School. Their homemade food and careful planning to provide nutritious delights for our students has earnt them this prestigious award.

Special thanks also to Denise Fisher our volunteer nutritionist who reviewed our menu and provided guidance on how to be comply with the new canteen regulations. A great team effort from all our canteen staff.

Following are the words sent from Steffi Meagher (Health Promotion officer):

‘Congratulations to Kerry Smallman and Robyn Lambley for achieving the NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy! The canteen has worked hard to provide you with healthy and delicious food. Thanks to your amazing canteen for helping our students make the healthy choice, the easy choice.’

Winter Uniform- No Umbrellas please!

The weather has definitely turned this week and the days are very cold. Winter uniform should be worn now. There are red track pants ($30) and grey trousers ($25) available in the uniform shop along with long sleeve polo shirts. Purchases can be made online and will be delivered to classrooms:

https://www.manlyvalepc.org.au/

Otherwise drop into the uniform shop on Friday mornings from 8.30am – 9.30am.

Singlets and undergarments also assist in keeping our children warm on these cold days.

On days like last Tuesday, we kept the students inside all day although at school we still need to move around for dance, gym and library lessons. The children also like to have some time outside to get fresh air and have a run around. Please make sure you send your child with layers of clothing that can be added and taken off, according to the temperatures.

Additional jackets may be worn over the school uniform and can be left outside the classroom to keep students warm in their transition to and from school. Raincoats are to be kept in bags at all times, umbrellas are too dangerous when there are large groups of children altogether. You can buy any type of raincoat or jacket at local stores or through the uniform shop ($25).

New Oval

This week the turf for our new oval was laid. It was very exciting for all staff and students to see our oval space covered in green! The landscaping works around the school are looking beautiful and we all can’t wait to see the fences taken down and new areas opened up.

Multicultural Speaking Competition

Last Friday we had our school finals for the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. The standard was extremely high this year and all contestants are to be congratulated on their efforts. Thank you to Mrs Banham who organised this competition and to our judges Mrs Radan, Miss Stacey and Ms Cash who had a difficult job adjudicating. Special mention to Matilda Graham who was the MC, Jake Van De Water the timekeeper and Toby Marsters who assisted during the impromptu speeches.

Our 2019 Multicultural Public Speaking winners were Talia Stedman and Phoebe Crowe (Stage 3) and Abigail Wilson and Isaac Sherlock (Stage 2). Congratulations to these outstanding students. The Local School’s finals will be hosted by Manly Vale Public School on Monday 17 June. Good luck to all our school finalists on that day.

Digi – Ed Stage 3

Last Tuesday our stage 3 students spent the day making Claymation movies with the Digi-Ed team. All students enjoyed working collaboratively, writing scripts, and using iPads and clay figures to produce a movie to share with their class. The incursions was a great way to explore our new flexible learning spaces and work across class settings.

Zone Cross Country- Wednesday 5 June (Cancelled)

The Zone Cross Country will now be run on Thursday 13 June. Good luck to all our competitors.

Q Station excursion

Years 5 and 6 have had a wonderful week with a visit to the Q Station on North Head today. This excursion allows our senior students to discuss and explore the impact of the early settlement on our indigenous people, learn about the impact of the Spanish flu and smallpox on the Aboriginal people and early settlers, and walk back in time to see what the early settlement of Manly looked like. The Q Station is a wonderful local resource and the stage 3 students are extremely fortunate to have this primary source of history on their doorstep. Learning about local history is always more relevant when exploring it first hand with expert guides and teachers.

Opportunity Class (OC) Test

Our year 4 students who have applied for the OC have all been assessed in English and Mathematics and school assessment scores have been registered on the OC processing site. The placement test will be held at a local school on Wednesday 31 July. All students need to sit the test on this day as there is no make-up day for this placement test.

All applicants will be advised by Wednesday 17 July as to where their local test centre will be. For more information, please follow the link below. Good luck to all our MVPS applicants. Thank you to Miss Thomson and the year 4 teachers for all their work in assessing and preparing these applications.

School Tour- Tuesday 11 June

Next week there will be a school tour for new and interested families on Tuesday 11 June. The tour will go for about half an hour and highlight our new learning spaces, library and hall. Parents who missed the tours at the beginning of the year are more than welcome to join the tour on that day.

The uniform shop will be open from 10.15am-11am on this day for purchases.

Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival- Wednesday 12 June

Good luck to both our Junior and Senior bands for their performance as part of the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High School next Wednesday evening. We look forward to hearing from both our bands at this prestigious event. Miss Taylor will be accompanying the Junior Band (6.40pm start/ 6pm meet) with Miss Stacey accompanying the Senior band (4.45pm meet/ 5pm start). Both bands are looking forward to the performance where they will be assessed by judges and given feedback to improve.

Thank you to our conductors Carlos and Ben for preparing our bands for this occasion.

School Leaders

On Friday 31 May Mrs Ward took Mia Lougher, Josh Slatter and Callum Matheson, three of our school leaders, to North Head for the 77th Anniversary Commemoration Service. It was held to acknowledge the first time war came to Sydney and to commemorate those who lost their lives throughout the war. Mr James Griffin hosted the service and Mr Fitzsimons gave a fantastic speech on the relationship between the Australians and the Turks. He explained how they managed to stay friends throughout the war. They sang the Song of Australia, I Vow to Thee My Country, the Royal Hymn and the National Anthem. Students had an opportunity to lay a book and wreath where each attendant stepped forward to place down an item of gratitude and took a moment to pay their respects to those who have fought for our country. The commemoration service also included The Ode, Last Post, A Minutes Silence and the Rouse. A nice morning tea was then enjoyed by all participants.
