Principal’s Report

This week will be the start of the leadership nomination and election procedures for 2019. Year 5 have heard from current leaders in various positions as to what the commitment of the various roles are including School Leader, Class Manager, Librarian and House Captain. This week year 5 will nominate for the 8 School Leader positions including School Captain and Vice Captain. The captains will be announced at the 3-6 Celebration of Learning assembly on Thursday 6 December. This is a very exciting time for year 5 as they prepare to lead the school next year.

Selective High School 2020

Permission notes have been sent home asking whether your year 5 child would like to sit the selective high school tests for a position in 2020. Please note that the application process is all online and must be completed by the parent by 12 November 2018. Please return the expression of interest notes so that we are able to double-check the online applications against the students who are intending to go through the selective high process.

Enrolling or leaving in 2019

Please notify the office as soon as possible if you are intending to enrol or leave the school next year. Staffing procedures have already begun and accurate numbers of students are required for 2019. There will be a school tour on Monday 3 December at 10.00am for any interested parents who are enrolling for next year.

School Fees - overdue

Please pay the final amounts owing on your school fees before the end of November. Most activities, excursions and incursions have been done and there are still amounts outstanding for some events. If you are having difficulty paying the fees please contact the office for an appointment. Students will not be attending extra curricular activities including picnic, robotics and Swim School if fees are not paid.

Littlescribe App

Some of the classes are using the Littlescribe App to publish student’s stories. The books are being written as a Christmas gift for parents. Please complete the permission note (sent home last week) if you wish the book to be published using the Littlescribe company and read the terms and conditions of the app before returning the note to school. If you intend to opt out of the publishing of the book, your child’s work will be sent home as a handmade book from school. The publishing of the books has been donated to the school by the owner of the app (Jenny Aitkinson) who has children at the school. We thank her for her generous donation.

Littlescribe uploads the books into a private library but requires parent authorisation and activation of the account before the book can be shared in an online platform. No book can be shared without parent consent. Parents can also decide whom the book can be shared with. No personal information other than a username or password has been given to Littlescribe by the school.

Aboriginal Education Experience

Last Monday 29 October, Sarah Hills, Lucy Scholtens, Tobias Twidale, Kyan McDougall and Mrs Blackband went to the Basin Track of West Head. We learnt about our local Country and how to respect and care for it. We gathered quite a lot of ideas for when we personalise the Ackowledgement of Country for our new school.

We walked through the bushland to understand and appreciate the Aboriginal perspective of nature and our country. When we first arrived, they gave us markings of our hands to respect and tell the land that we were there. We also learnt that different plants have many uses and saw rock engravings that are as old as the Dreaming. We learnt a lot from Clarence, Dave and Kylie, our Aboriginal Education Officers.

We had a great time, learnt lots and we feel very privileged to have been on the excursion.

The Mall Music / Westfield Warringah Mall School Showcase

On Monday 5 November, the Junior and Senior Bands will be performing at Warringah Mall as part of the School Showcase. We would love to see as many parents, grandparents and friends as possible at the performance. Both bands will be performing from 1.00pm to 1.45pm. Come along and enjoy a cup of coffee while the bands perform a selection of songs for your enjoyment.

A reminder for band members: no canteen orders, wear full school uniform and bring your instrument.

Remembrance Day Service 2018

Stage 3 will attend a Remembrance Day service at Manly Dam on Friday 9 November from 10:30am until 11:25am. Parents and carers from the Manly Vale community are invited to attend the service. On behalf of Manly Vale Public School, Kyan McDougall will be delivering a speech about World War 1.

Stage 1 Koori Kinnections Incursion

Last Wednesday Stage 1 had a visit from Karessa from Koori Kinnections. Karessa presented an engaging and interactive Aboriginal education session to the groups. The students learnt about significant Aboriginal tools and weapons like the boomerang and coolamon. They discussed the significance of totems and learnt a traditional Torres Strait Islander song and dance. A highlight of the day was the creation of their miniature noweys, traditional paperbark canoes, which they were able to float at the end of the session. We are grateful to Karessa and the team at Koori Kinnections for coming to Manly Vale and sharing their stories and knowledge in a way that was fun, age appropriate and memorable.

Wellbeing, Mindfulness and Growth Mindset Information Session Friday 2 November 2018

Due to many families celebrating Halloween on Wednesday evening, we have rescheduled our upcoming parent information session to this coming Friday afternoon 2 November. Mrs Lucey and Mrs Blackband will be running a Wellbeing, Mindfulness and Growth Mindset information session. We will look at what it all means, how these concepts are supported at school and tips for home.

The session will take place in the Tech Room from 3.15-4.15pm. Interested parents can register at the school office in person, via phone or email so we know who will be attending.

School Student Transport Scheme 2019 Applications (including Opal Cards)

School Student applications for 2019 open from Monday 15 October 2018. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

  • Are continuing at the same school;
  • Are residing at the same address;
  • Have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to the link below.

https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.
