Principal’s Report
Today our year 3 & 5 students received their NAPLAN student reports. The reports reflect your child’s performance in Literacy and Numeracy. It is a point in time test on the current curriculum. Many things can affect your child’s performance in this test including sickness, nervousness and lack of time to complete the test sufficiently. It is important to realise that although this assessment is a good indication of how your child is performing in certain areas of literacy and numeracy it is not a comprehensive assessment of your child’s overall performance at school. The school report will come out next term, which does assess all the Key Learning areas including science, creative and practical arts, personal health and development, and HSIE (history and geography).
A NAPLAN workshop (scheduled for today) has been postponed until next term so that you can find out more about your child’s performance in the test and ask any questions. Mrs Blackband and Mrs Lee are happy to answer any enquiries about the NAPLAN online during the workshop on Thursday 25 October at 3.15pm. Please remember that Manly Vale Public School was one of the 420 schools to do the test online (except for the Year 3 writing test which was done with pen and paper) which was a very different experience for some children.
Please follow the link below to find out more about the online results:

Thank you to all the volunteer parents who have occupied these positions this year. For the many hours of work you put in, organising performances, overseeing rehearsals, liaising and supporting the Band Conductors (Ben and Gergely) and supporting the organisation and running of the band program.

Treasurer- Jo Poulos (Hamilton)
Instrument Hire- Turia Mako
Junior Band Liaison- Glenys Beaumont
Senior Band Liaison- Manuela Curzon
We need to get band parents along to this meeting as there are many volunteer jobs to allocate for next year including fundraising coordinator, band camp organiser and performance and event manager. If you are a new or interested band parent please come along to this meeting.
We wish to thank Mrs Mel Corner who will be leaving the band program this year with her son Noah moving onto high school. Mel has put many years into supporting the band and will be a great loss to the organisation. Thank you Mel!
Regional Athletics
Congratulations to Lucy Scholtens who made the finals for 100 and 200 metre races at the Regional Athletics carnival last Monday at Homebush and to Kyan McDougall who came 3rd in the senior boy’s discus. The regional carnival is an extremely competitive event and all our representatives including, Hilton Kennedy and Levi Coates-Westerink should be very proud of their efforts in athletics this year. Congratulations to Manly PSSA as they won the regional carnival.
Kindergarten 2019
Next Wednesday 26 September we will have our 2nd Kindergarten Orientation session. This will start at 1.45pm – 2.30pm in the school hall and Kindergarten classrooms. It is important that all new Kindergarten students attend every session during the program so school readiness assessments can be completed. If you haven’t yet enrolled your child for 2019 please do so by next week. We currently have 80 students enrolled for next year.
Bus Behaviour
Please talk to your child about remaining seated while the bus is moving and always is well-mannered and polite on the bus. We have had a number of complaints that Manly Vale students are swearing and getting out of their seats on the bus. Please make sure your children are waiting sensibly at the bus stop and not damaging property or running around near the road whilst they are waiting for the bus.
We have had many meetings at school regarding the correct ways to behave whilst waiting for and riding on the bus, it would be appreciated if parents could strictly supervise this at the bus stops as well.
Influenza
We have had a case of influenza reported to the school. Please make sure that you take your child to the doctor is they exhibit any of the following; sudden onset of fever, sore throat, runny nose, cough, muscle and headaches. Children need to stay at home until they feel better.

Physical Activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines
How much physical activity do children need?
- Children and youth should participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous (‘huff and puff’) physical activity every day.
- On at least three days per week, children should engage in activities that strengthen muscle and bone.
This activity doesn’t all have to be done at once. It can be built up through the day. For example walking or riding to and from school, active play at home, and organised sport after school and on weekends.
Sedentary behaviour guidelines
As well as being active, it is important to minimise the time children spend being sedentary every day. To achieve this:
- Limit use of electronic media for entertainment (e.g. television, seated electronic games and computer use) to no more than two hours a day - particularly during daylight hours.
- Break up long periods of sitting as often as possible.
Active Kids voucher ($100 value)
Once, per calendar year, per child, you may be eligible to receive a $100 Active Kids voucher from the NSW government. To find out more go to:

Congratulations to Lydia Choi in 5M who submitted a winning entry to the School Magazine Writing Competition earlier this year. Lydia’s short story was selected from thousands of clever and creative entries by Year 5 students across NSW. Lydia received a School Magazine Certificate at the Friday assembly and her short story will appear in the October (issue 9) of the Orbit School Magazine. We have included Lydia’s entry for you to enjoy!

The Hydra of Greece
The creature was enormous. Charli gripped her dagger. She was a bold child and full of energy. Her aunt was the mighty and important Queen Merabrough. However, after stealing for the poor, Charli knew about consequences.
Charli anxiously listened for her summons.
“LET HER OUT!” said a commanding voice, which shook the Coliseum. Charli stepped out of her dungeon to face the blazing sun and relentless crowd.
The Hydra’s eyes sparkled, swooping over Charli. Charli took a step and deliberately fell – a distraction. It blinked, confused. However, Charli already had a plan. The Heracles route. ‘Get the fire,’ she thought.
With a stick on fire, she stepped forward, and with one movement she killed it. The blood sizzled. But why was it still moving?
