National Reconciliation Week 27 May- 3 June
The theme for this year’s National Reconciliation Week is “Be a Voice for Nations.” It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The meaning of “reconciliation” is the act of causing two groups or people to become friendly again after an argument or disagreement. As a child growing up in country NSW, the Riverina area/ Wiradjuri Country, and being schooled in the late 60s and 70s, I never understood or was aware of the impact colonisation had on Aboriginal people. I was never taught the history of Australia prior to the landing of Captain Cook at Botany Bay.
History has always been told through the eyes of the conqueror and Australia was no different. It was only in my adult years that I discovered the rich history and culture of the First Nations people. Their connection to land and country and their ability to inhabit this country for 60,000 years prior to first settlement. It was an awakening moment for me as a young adult studying to be a teacher. I am proud as a school leader that today’s young Australians learn the whole truth of the history of Australia. That we openly talk and acknowledge the history of all Australians and the First Nations people, who were the original custodians of this wonderful land we all live in.
For true reconciliation to occur we all must acknowledge the wrong-doings of our past, that our Aboriginal people were dispossessed, persecuted, and oppressed as a result of colonisation, and move forward to teach the truth, so that we have understanding of each other and learn to walk together in peace and harmony.
The “Sea of Hands” installation at the front of the school this week reflects every student’s history. What makes each of them unique as an individual. As a school we will acknowledge the past and work towards a harmonious future for all Australians.

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to all the students who made the school finals for the Multicultural Public Speaking competition. It was a very high standard last Friday, and all finalists should be extremely proud of their speeches and presentation.
Good luck to all those students who will compete at the finals of the competition on Monday 26 June at Brookvale Public School. We all feel very proud of the school team that will be representing Manly Vale. Thank you to Mrs Radan and Ms Cash for all their organisation of this event. Notes will be sent home this week to the finalists via email.
Friday Assembly - 2 June
This Friday there will be a K-2 assembly at 2.15pm led by 1C. Principal awards and merit certificates for K-2 students, will be given out during this assembly. Parents are welcome to attend. There will be no morning assembly this week.
Good Luck to Junior and Senior Band - Friday 2 June

Skip-A-Thon - Thursday 15 June
This week sponsorship forms went home with all students for our 2023 School Skip-A-Thon. This is a fun gala day where K-2 students will participate in a variety of skipping and physical activities for 1 hour continuously, and our 3-6 students for 1 1/2 hours. There will be a range of activities which the children can participate in for their designated time slot not just skipping, so that even those students who are unable to skip can participate. The idea is to remain physical for the duration of the time.
This is a P&C fundraiser which supports the school with resources for our students including School Learning and Support Officers, replacement, and purchase of technology in classrooms and additional books and resources to support the implementation of the new curriculum. The P&C has pledged to support the replacement of some of our laptops, as all our current devices will be out of warranty by the end of 2024.
Individual collections of sponsorship funds will be confidential to support privacy of families. The idea is to raise what funds you can to contribute to a class tally. Prizes for the most funds raised in classes will be as follows.
First Prize- pizza lunch for class
Second Prize- cupcakes for class
Third Prize- Zooper Dooper iceblocks for the class
Thank you for your continued support of our school. Please only give what you can, and do not allow your children to knock on strangers’ doors for sponsorship. You can give as little or as much as you are able, and your donation will remain confidential. All sponsorship forms must be returned to the class teacher by Wednesday 14 June whether you have been able to get sponsorship or not.
School Fees / Statement of Account
School fees “Whole School Program” reminders will be sent out this week. You child/ren have already received workbooks, used computer licenses, and attended dance and gym, so prompt payment would be appreciated. Parent Workshop
Parent workshop to provide strategies for improved parent / child relationships and positive behaviour at home
As we embrace the more familiar daily routine we must also consider what communities, families and educators need in order to address the harmful effects of the pandemic has had on children’s academic and social development. In 2022, Manly Vale Public School upskilled our Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 teachers on the evidence-based program, called PAX Good Behaviour Game. This program is supported by the NSW Department of Education and underpins our positive student behaviour programs. It has now been introduced into Kindergarten and Year 1 classrooms since the beginning of this year.
The PAX Good Behaviour Game (PAX GBG) is a classroom-based system that teachers use to teach skills for self-regulation, co-regulation, and self-control during any school or after school activity and at home. It does this through creating a shared classroom and school purpose and vision with teachers and peers to create peace, productivity, health, and happiness. We value and understand the importance of having consistent language and structures between home and school so that children are best supported to thrive in both environments.
We are excited to offer a parent workshop delivered by our school Deputy Principal, Mrs Sharon Oscroft and our school Assistant Principal, Mrs Sarah Birrell, who have been trained in delivering this effective behaviour program.
The program will be held on Monday 19 June at 5:30 – 6:30pm in the school staffroom. Please refer to the attached flyer for detailed information about the workshop for parents. Registration is required as resources are provided for each attendee. Please see the flyer for the link to register your attendance by 12 June.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
At its heart, reconciliation is about strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous peoples, for the benefit of all Australians.
This year’s National Reconciliation Week theme is Be a Voice for Generations.
At Manly Vale Public School, we will be exploring the theme and learning more about Aboriginal histories and culture and actively thinking about how we can Be a Voice for Generations.
We would love to hear how you and your families will be sharing your own messages of reconciliation. Wingaru kids have created a great megaphone activity for you to record your ideas and messages. We would love to showcase these in the Bush Telegraph next week. Send your completed megaphone message into the office or to Mrs Lucey’s classroom by Tuesday 13 June and we’ll share it with our Manly Vale community.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Final
Last Friday, we held our school's Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition Final for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students. We would like to congratulate all students who participated in the weekly public speaking workshops and competed in the preliminary final rounds. The standard was very high and it’s a remarkable achievement to have been selected as one of our finalists.
Congratulations to the following students who competed in the Manly Vale Public School Final:
Stage 2 |
Stage 3 |
Matilda Bromiley |
Ariel De Souza Bell |
Darcy Richmond |
Savannah Lowe |
Marlowe McInnes |
Ruby Tyler |
Lucy Paehlig |
Freddie Atkinson |
Evey Seymour |
All students delivered well-rehearsed prepared speeches on their chosen topic with confidence and natural flair. Students were then given just five minutes to prepare an impromptu speech, head straight back to the hall and deliver their impromptu speech to the audience. We are so proud of all our finalists who were so brave to do such a difficult task in front of such a large audience. Well done! The impromptu topic for Stage 2 was ‘Hard Work’ and the impromptu topic for Stage 3 was ‘Tough Choices’. These topics were very fitting for the adjudicators who had to select two winners from each Stage to progress to the Interschool Final which will take place at Brookvale Public School in Week 10 this term. It really was a difficult decision for the adjudicators as the standard was exceptional in both competitions.
Congratulations to Lucy Paehlig and Darcy Richmond in Stage 2 and Freddie Atkinson and Savannah Lowe in Stage 3 who will represent Manly Vale Public School at the Interschool Final. We know you will do a wonderful job representing Manly Vale Public School. Good luck!

K-2 Dance Showcase
Our spectacular K-2 dance concert will be Wednesday 28 June, with the dress rehearsal the day before on Tuesday 27 June. Information about the details of this concert will be sent home via Class Coordinators. Entry to the concert will be a gold coin donation.
This year we have decided to continue to separate the dance showcase into Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, due to the increase in audience members.
The Kindergarten dance showcase will
commence at approximately 10:00am.
Stage 1 (years 1 & 2) dance showcase will commence at approximately
11:30am.
The students who participate in the dance concert have been invoiced $12.00. This cost covers costumes and props for their performance.
We ask that toddlers who attend the showcase be supervised and seated on an adults’ lap, due to the limited number of seats.
The school will not be filming the K-2 dance showcase this year. Unfortunately, parents and visitors are not allowed to film during the dance concert. Thank you for your understanding.
K-2 can not wait to show off their incredible dance moves!
Mrs Kennedy, Miss Smyth and Miss Vanessa.
Dance Ensemble
Congratulations to our Boys and Girls Dance Ensemble Groups
Last week our Senior Boys Hip Hop and the Girls Dance ensemble successfully auditioned for the Sydney North Dance Festival. The dance groups are represented by students from years 3-6 who auditioned at the beginning of the year.
Congratulations to both these talented groups, as they were selected to represent Manly Vale Public School at Glen Street Theatre.
The boys and girls dance ensemble groups will be performing in a dress rehearsal on Tuesday 20 June and live performances in weeks 9 & 10 at Glen Street Theatre.
The dance ensemble groups will also be performing at school on Monday 19 June (Week 9) for the Kindergarten Open Day and on Wednesday 28 (Week 10) June for the K-2 Showcase.
Message from the School Counsellor – Cliona Mulloy
Resilient Kids Toolkit (Royal Far West) Section 4; Tips on connection and communication
This is the fourth and last section of the Resilient Kids Toolkit from Royal Far West focusing on how we build better communication and connection with our child.
The key areas we are looking at are.
- What is emotional resilience?
- Putting yourself first
- How to understand and manage emotions
- Tips on connection and communication
- Creating predictability
- Taking Turns
- Getting enough rest
- Connecting with kids
You can help your child build emotional resilience by practising developing predictability, empathy, and connection with your child. Research has shown that children respond well to clear, consistent, and predictable environments. This contributes to a child’s sense of safety and helps them to feel more supported and able to respond calmly to changes or challenges that may arise throughout their day.
Showing your child that they can feel safe in a strong, loving, and consistent relationship, both with their parents and carers, as well as with their wider family and friends. This is the single-most important thing children need to build resilience.
