Principal’s Report

Congratulations to two of our year 6 girls Ellie Briggs and Niki Brown who have made the Pittwater and Manly Combined Zone Soccer Team. Good luck to both girls!

Walk Safely to School Day-Last Friday

Thank you to all the parents, community members and students who walked to school safely last Friday. It is a great way to talk about the road rules and traffic issues we have in our local area and make children aware of the correct way to cross the road and travel to school whether by foot, bus, bike, or car.

As staff we have had some training in road safety awareness and our school noticeboard, website and newsletter will be reflecting some of the lessons and road safety strategies we will be focussing on in classrooms. Every few weeks we will be advertising a Road Safety message which can be discussed at home as a family. It is our community’s responsibility to look after each other. Safe road practices assist in keeping all of us safe.

Kiss and Drop Zone

Please only use the kiss and drop zone on Gibbs & Sunshine Streets to drop and pick up your child from school. You should not leave your car and students should cross at the crossing to meet you at this zone.

National Simultaneous Story Telling week.

This week all students will read with their buddy classes “The Speedy Sloth” as part of the National Simultaneous Story telling initiative. Reading should be a regular part of children’s learning and leisure time. Reading with a buddy is always a great way to encourage our reluctant readers to share the literature experience. Thank you to our librarians Mrs Yardley and Mrs Butcher for their encouragement of reading through this initiative, and the Premier’s Reading Challenge.

Zone Cross Country- Thursday 25 May

Congratulations to all our athletes on representing our school today at Curl Curl in the Zone Cross Country Carnival. Special thanks to Mr Dylan and Miss Hepworth for their organisation of the team and transport to and from the venue. We are still struggling with confirming events with buses and drivers still being in short supply. Thank you to all the parents who drove additional students to and from the race today.

Multicultural Speaking Competition- Friday 26 May

Congratulations to all the finalists in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. The finals will be hosted by our school captains Emma and Raff, in the school hall. Stage 2 will start at 9.30am and Stage 3 finals at 10.30am. Parents are welcome to attend.

The speeches will be adjudicated by Mrs Radan, Mrs Johnston, and Mrs Banham. Good luck to all the finalists.

Assembly and SRC - Friday 26 May

There will be a short K-6 assembly at 9.00am tomorrow to present principal awards. This assembly will be held under the K-2 COLA and all parents are invited to attend.

An SRC meeting will take place at 2.30pm tomorrow afternoon and the guest classes this week are 2LY, 4A and 6B. Parents are welcome to watch this meeting in the school hall.

Farewell Mr Urben

Tomorrow we will farewell our English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EALD) teacher Mr Joe Urben. Mr Urben has been a wonderful support teacher for our students who are learning English as a second language. We wish him all the best in his travels overseas and hope he returns to us next year. Goodbye and Goodluck Mr Urben!

National Reconciliation Week 2023

Next week as a school we will celebrate National Reconciliation Week. This year the theme is “Be a Voice for Nations.” It is a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. The students at Manly Vale will participate in a whole school artwork which will be displayed at the front of the school. Thank you to Mrs Blackband and the Aboriginal education committee for all the preparation and organisation around this important event.

P & C Fundraising Events- Skip-a-thon and Taco Tuesday

We have two very exciting fundraising events coming up this term. Taco Tuesday will take place on Tuesday 20 June. Parents are organising a “Hello Fresh” type of order for tacos on a Tuesday. Orders can be placed between 30 May and 13 June. See flyer attached to this newsletter.

The second event will be whole school Skip-a-Thon. All students in K-2 will be asked to participate in skipping activities for 1 hour, and students in 3-6 will need to skip for one and a half hours. All students will bring home a sponsorship form next week to obtain sponsorship for the event on Thursday 15 June. All parents, friends and grandparents are invited to sponsor the students. Please do not allow your child to door knock on houses where they do not know the occupants. Sponsorship should be asked of known adults. All sponsorship forms must be returned to school on the day or prior to the event. Classroom teachers will be checking off forms as they come in. All forms must be returned whether there is sponsorship or not.

Prizes for the classes who raise the most funds:

1st Prize- pizza lunch for the class
2nd prize- cupcakes for the class
3rd prize – Zooper Doopers for the class

All funds raised will go towards the purchase of resources including technology for classrooms, library books and sports equipment.

Sickness

The school is being impacted by the seasonal arrival of flu, bad colds, and the occasional case of COVID too. We are experiencing increasing numbers of student illness, along with several teachers and staff sick on any given day. This has been compounded by the state-wide casual shortage meaning we, regrettably, must merge classes more often than we would wish to.

Our community can best support us by following all the COVID and flu guidelines and by keeping children home if they show the slightest signs or symptoms. The latest guidelines are available at:

https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/advice-for-families

Early Departures on Fridays

It is exceedingly difficult to pick up students early on a Friday as they attend different venues and locations during the day for sport. Please refrain from early pickups on Fridays, along with the late emails and changes to routine for getting home, as it is difficult to find students to convey these messages. Emails and changes to routine that come to the office after 11.30am cannot be guaranteed to be delivered to students going to sport.

Hand Sanitiser

We have a surplus of hand sanitisers if anyone would like a bottle, please come to the office.

Canteen News

PSSA and Friday orders

PSSA students can only order recess on Fridays. We have included some yummy recess options so you can still get something great to eat before sport.

Remember you will not be at school to collect any lunch orders.

Year 3-6 students doing school sport (Not PSSA) will be collecting their lunch at 1.00pm after sport.

Volunteers

The canteen needs your help to get all the lunches made as well as serve at the counter. We really need Volunteers on Thursday and Friday mornings to help get all the sandwiches and toasties made. Without volunteers the canteen will not be able to offer the full range of yummy foods each day.

Please sign up below, feel free to sign up with a friend if you want, just pop both your names in the signup sheet.
