Summer PSSA - Finishes this Friday 17 March
This week is our last summer PSSA day for the term. Our Friday timetable will revert to normal lunch and recess from Friday 24 March. We will be trialling students over the last few weeks of this term for a winter competition; however, we are one of eight schools who have been unable to secure buses as transport for this winter competition. The PSSA delegates are meeting this week to try and find a solution to this ongoing issue of the lack of bus drivers and buses available to transport our players. As a school we have tried four companies and have been unable to secure bookings for a winter PSSA competition. We will keep the parents and community updated as to whether a PSSA competition will go ahead.

Resilient Kids Toolkit (Royal Far West)
Parenting and caring for health and happy children is not the easiest job in the world, but the good news is that there are plenty of great evidenced-based resources that we can learn from. Over the next few weeks I plan to take some simple and fun ideas from the Resilient Kids Toolkit produced by the Royal Far West. This free Resilient Kids Toolkit guide is filled with many easy-to-follow strategies for parents and activities for kids. It’s designed to help develop positive relationships, strengthen mental health and build resilience and self-awareness. You’ll find essential and practical information to support you and your family and help you navigate stressful events and life’s challenges.
The key areas we will look at are:
- What is emotional resilience?
- Self-care plans
- How to understand and manage emotions
- Tips on connection and communication

Traffic and Travel Changes 2023
Bus service to New Catchment Area
We are currently working with Transport NSW and the Department of Education to provide a bus service to the new areas within our catchment zone. To truly reflect the need for a service to this new additional part our catchment, we require parents to apply for an Opal card for their children that will reflect their address details. Please complete an application for an opal card using the link below, even though there is not a service currently running to your area.
https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-school-travel-pass
https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/general-feedback
Please be aware that students who live within the SSTS exclusion zone (1.6km as the crow flies from the school) will need to pay $55 per term for the School Travel pass. Please complete your application prior to 14 March so a final decision can be made as to whether a bus is required to this new area.
Bus Stop at Quirk Road
Thank you to Mr Andrew McGuirk who has successfully petitioned Transport NSW to have a safer bus stop and crossing option for those students who currently catch the 618 buses. Engineers are currently looking into relocating the bus stop in Quirk Road further away from the intersection and putting a raised crossing for students to safely cross the road after exiting the bus.
There will be some community consultation over the next few weeks so parents and community within this area are encouraged to support this initiative, for the safety of our students. If you currently live in Quirk Road, please look out for consultation paperwork over the coming few weeks and make your responses.
Parking area closed during school pick up and drop off
In response to the recent traffic audit by Northern Beaches Council, the car park located on the corner of Sunshine Street and Gibbs Street is now closed for pick up and drop off for children.
Parents and community will not be permitted to enter and park in this council carpark from 8.00am- 9.30am (morning drop off) and 2.30pm – 4.00pm (afternoon pick up). Please be prepared to park away from the school and walk up, as Parking Rangers will be policing this over the next few weeks.
Exemptions apply for those vehicles who have a “Mobility Permit” sticker.
5 minute Parking Zone next to Car Park on Gibbs/Sunshine Street
Please make sure that you only park in the 5-minute parking zone next to the car park on Gibbs/Sunshine Street. Rangers will be fining drivers who stay longer than the 5-minute time slots. The “Kiss and Drop” 5-minute parking zones are meant for drivers to drop in and pick up or drop off. You are not supposed to leave your vehicle.
You are not permitted to do U-turns at the front of the school when leaving this zone so please continue down Gibbs Street. Rangers will be enforcing all these regulations over the next few weeks.

Please contact Northern Beaches council on 1300 434 434 or email council@beaches.nsw.gov.au for further information.

Harmony Day
The theme for this year’s Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. Harmony Day celebrates our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Manly Vale Public School is celebrating Harmony Day on Monday 20 March. Students can wear a ‘touch of orange’ as orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
We will also be collecting a gold coin donation to support the families affected by the Turkey/Syrian earthquake.
Classes will be engaged in discussions and lessons celebrating diversity. You may like to talk with your children about your own family’s heritage, share special recipes, memories and photos of celebrations and anything that celebrates your diversity and culture.
Students are also invited to enter the Harmony Day poster competition run by the link below. Entries are open to all school students in Australia. The theme for 2023 is Living in Harmony and students must submit an A3 size drawing, painting, or mixed media artwork. For more information on prizes and eligibility please see the link below:
https://movingforwardtogether.org.au/poster-competition/
https://movingforwardtogether.org.au/
Mrs Lucey can arrange for postal entries to be submitted by the closing date. If you are interested in entering the competition and would like her to arrange your entry, please submit your A3 artwork to Mrs Lucey (2LY) no later than Wednesday 29 March. Please remember to include your full name on the back of your artwork.

Please only order frozen birthday treats through the birthday section to ensure we have enough stock. Orders must be placed by 1pm the day prior (or Friday for Monday orders).
Year 3-6 students are encouraged to order their birthday treats earlier in the week as their PSSA classmates will not be at school to enjoy the birthday treats.

We are sorry for the difficulties in ordering through Flexischools last Friday (10 March). Flexischools have assured us that they have resolved the issues that prevented the app and website from working. If you have had any issues that have not been resolved, we encourage you to contact Flexischools as soon as possible (1300 361 769).
