Principal’s Report

Thank you to everyone who attended the various Open Day events this week. The annual athletics carnival was a great success, all students must be congratulated on their enthusiastic participation in events. Thanks to our house captains for the organisation of their houses and motivating their teams to cheer on athletes. Thank you, Mrs Birrell, Mrs Ward and Mr Dylan for the organisation leading up to the day.

Our K-2 Fun carnival also was a great success, all students enjoyed the rotation of events and activities. Thank you to our K-2 teachers for all their work in preparing activities and to all the parents who came along to watch and cheer on our students.

The P&C Cake stall was also well received and a big thank you to all the parents who baked cakes, helped on the stall, and transported cakes and ice blocks to David Thomas. We had so many cakes we were able to run the store on our Open Day as well.

P & C Meeting- Tuesday 16 August 6.45pm

Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 16 August at 6.45pm in the staffroom. Discussion around the upcoming events including the Trivia Night and the Father’s Day Breakfast will be top of the agenda, along with the construction of the new playground equipment in the September School holidays. All parents welcome.

Open Day - Wednesday 3 August

What a spectacular day we had to open our school and share all the wonderful things students are doing in their classrooms. The maths workshops were well attended, and parents were able to learn the new ways maths is being taught in schools. Thank you to Mrs Oscroft, Miss Pembroke, and Mrs Gibson on running the K-2 workshop, and to Mrs Birrell, Ms Jones, Mrs Loudon and Mrs Oscroft for running the 3-6 workshop.

The picnic lunch and Great Book Swap was a lovely way for parents to enjoy time with their children and their friends. With performances after lunch from our Band, Choir and Drama group to finish the formal proceedings for the day. The school tours for parents and community members were an incredibly positive experience with some parents not having visited the new school in the past few years.

Thank you to all the parents who attended this special day. The theme this year was “Creating Futures” and after visiting the school we hope that you see that our future is in safe hands with the students of Manly Vale. It is always a pleasure to see the children share their work and classrooms with their parents.

Finals for the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition- Friday 5 August

Good luck to our two finalists Abigail Wilson (Stage 3) and Zoe Shalav (Stage 2) on presenting their speeches as school finalists at State Parliament House tomorrow. Both students are outstanding public speakers, and we know they will represent our school with pride at this prestigious competition. Good Luck!

Arts Alive Choir Performance at Town Hall- Tuesday 9 August

Good luck to our school choir for their performance next week as part of the Arts Alive Choral performance. This event is always an exciting one for our choir and we look forward to their performance next week. Thank you to Mrs Mauger and Mrs Warnock for their organisation and preparation of our choir for this event.

The second half of our annual athletics carnival will take place next Thursday at school on our school oval. All the field events will be run for the day for students who are 8 years old and above. Shot put, high jump and long jump will take place on this day. Please make sure all students come dressed and ready in their sports uniform that day.

K-2 Athletics Carnival

The sun was shining, and K-2 had a wonderful time at our Athletics Carnival on Tuesday.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers who came to watch and cheer on their children.

The students rotated around 9 different sport rotations with the egg and spoon race and parachute being firm favourites.

3 – 6 Athletics Carnival

What a fantastic day Tuesday was. It was incredible to see the students out in the sunshine enjoying our first athletics carnival in 2 years. Well done to all participants for having a go and earning points for their Houses.

Results for the carnival will be printed in next week’s Bush Telegraph and ribbons will be awarded in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for an announcement on when this will be.

Thank you to all parent volunteers who offered up their time and effort to ensure our carnival was as successful as it was. Well done to the cake stall as well, it was a huge success.

A massive shout out to all teachers who were magnificent in helping for the day and ensuring all our kids had a fun day.

The field events will be held next Thursday 11 August for the entire day. Please ensure your child is sent to school in sports uniform and a drink bottle.

We hope everyone had a blast and were proud of their efforts – the teachers certainly were!

Drama Arts Alive Festival

Last Wednesday night and Thursday the Manly Vale Public School Drama Club had their big performance at the Arts Alive Drama Festival at The Concourse Theatre in Chatswood. The night and matinee performance were a success with the club performing their rendition of Lauren Child’s popular picture book ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Book’.

I would like to congratulate our drama club for their dedication to weekly drama rehearsals and their enthusiasm all year.

The drama club was excited to perform for all our visitors on Open Day Wednesday 3 August.

Book Week Dress Up Day

Book Week Dress Up Day will be held on Wednesday 24 August (Week 6). Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book to celebrate our love of reading. Costumes do not have to be elaborate or expensive – you can use things that you already have at home, including borrowed clothes or recycled materials.

Author Visits

We will be hosting the popular author Andrew McDonald on Thursday 25 August. Andrew McDonald is the author of the bestselling Real Pigeons junior fiction series. He loves writing stories that make kids laugh, wonder and leap into the air with surprise.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

We are nearing the end of the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2022. The closing date is Friday 19 August. Congratulations to the many children who have worked hard to finish the challenge already.

Please remember:

K-2 Students will be completing the challenge at school you do not have to do anything at home. Students will read 30 books in library and class time and then receive a certificate at the end of the year.

3-6 students will be expected to complete the challenge independently. They need to read 20 books and enter them into the PCR website by the closing date Friday 19 August, to qualify for a certificate at the end of the year. Students use their regular school login to access the website.

Please see the PCR website for challenge rules, booklists and information on how to logbooks to your reading record online. Most questions can be answered at the PRC website, however please contact me, if you cannot find the information that you need, or if you have queries relaying directly to your child’s account. Students may also visit the library during lunchtime for PCR help.

Canteen News

The Canteen is open at lunch only for frozen treats and snacks. We still encourage you to order as much as possible through Flexischools to reduce crowding at the canteen.

The canteen relies on volunteers to open for counter service at lunch. Please sign up below for term 3.

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050e4baaaf2da2fe3-term10

Please remember that only a small amount of money is needed to buy something at the canteen. Please do not send $10, $20 or $50 notes as we do not keep change for these large notes.

Birthday Treats

Please order your child's birthday treat by 1.00pm the day before to allow time for us to order and prepare them.

Emergency Lunch Payments

If you have been advised that your child has received an emergency lunch from the canteen, please pay for it as soon as possible. You can make payment via Flexischools using the IOU option.

PSSA Lunch Orders

If your child is participating in PSSA sports on Fridays, please remember to select the PSSA option when ordering so that we have their lunch ready for them at the earlier time.

Do not forget to order any drinks or snacks as there is not time to purchase food before leaving. We do not recommend ice blocks due to the limited time they have to eat.

Remember no hot foods are to be ordered

Road Safety Review – Community Input

Northern Beaches Council has developed a schools road safety and active travel project to identify issues and concerns around schools and to encourage more active and safe journeys to and from schools. Manly Vale Public School has been selected as one of the schools we are reviewing this year.

As part of our review, we are providing a self-reporting opportunity for the school community to give us feedback using an interactive map.

We invite Manly Vale Public School parents, students and the wider school community to participate in the self-reporting opportunity using Social Pinpoint.

This allows you to tell us exactly where concerns and issues are for parking, speeding, walking, bike/skate/scooting, pedestrian safety and general issues, related to your school.

How you can help

  • Please share the link in your school newsletter and any school managed social media pages that parent’s access
o The online map allows people to indicate issues in specific places, and to categorise them with an image
o The associated survey provides us with some additional travel information
  • Please share this opportunity with students, parents, carers, staff and anyone else you think is appropriate – the more comments for Manly Vale Public School the better!

https://northernbeaches.mysocialpinpoint.com/northern-beaches-safe-schools

We would appreciate feedback by Sunday 21 August 2022.

This project requires a collaborative approach to ensure that we can develop and deliver improved road safety, parking and active travel school projects for the benefit of your school community and local residents, therefore your assistance in sharing the Social Pinpoint link is appreciated and necessary to ensure that we capture as many comments as possible.

If you have any questions relating to this, please contact me.
