Principal’s Report
It was lovely to have a fine and sunny long weekend without rain. It was a great lead into the upcoming holidays in a few weeks. There is still a lot of students, teachers and families battling sickness within the school community and the three-day break allowed some families to stop and rest and try and recoup from what has been a very difficult few weeks.
The students seem to be coming down with influenza, coughs and colds now as most families have had their share of COVID. There will be more RAT tests sent home this week so that families can keep on testing through the winter season. Please make sure to keep your children at home if they are experiencing any cold or flu-like symptoms.
Stage 1 Fire Truck Incursion
Yesterday our Stage 1 students had their first incursion for the year with a visit from our local fire personnel, their truck and the NSW police. It was great to see the excitement on the Years 1 & 2 students faces as they listened and spoke to our local community members.
Thank you to Mrs Fisk for the organisation of the incursions as part of the Term 2 History and Geography units of work.

Week of Reconciliation in Year 4
Year 4 explored what that the Reconciliation Week’s theme means to them. Below are some examples of their writing.
Be Brave, Make Change - By Oscar Baleikasavu
Being brave and making changes is being respectful to our surroundings. People, plants, animals, environment.
Smiling, being inclusive and helping people are key components to making changes around us.
Being brave and standing up to bullies, or socialising with a lonely person can have amazing benefits!
Even saying 'I'm sorry' when you didn't cause the pain, shows that you care for another.
And that is what I believe being brave and making change is.
Be Brave, Make Change - By Sol Houston
A way we can be brave and make change is by welcoming others and respecting all people no matter what they look like or sound like. We should always stand up for people and one way you can do that is by saying "No" if someone is being picked on. We should always be apologetic if we do something wrong, by saying "sorry".
And we should always remember to Be Brave and Make Change.
Be Brave, Make Change - By Lottie Higby
When I stand up for myself, I feel stronger. However, standing up for other people makes me feel even better. Being brave is great and you could get a lot more out of life experiences, and perhaps even succeed in them too. But being brave and making change is not something everyone finds easy to do. It takes a special kind of person to stand up for others, but you should always try and help people who need it.

Debating
GATS Premier’s Debating Challenge
Last Thursday our 2 debating teams, Manly Vale Public School Foxes and Manly Vale Public School Owls, debated against each other. The overarching topic was Health and Fitness in schools and the teams had to choose between the following topics:
- That primary schools should teach self-defence classes.
- That we should ban kids under 18 from buying junk food like lollies, chips and ice creams.
- That primary schools should set aside 30 minutes every day for sport and exercise.
Luckily both teams decided to debate that ‘primary schools should set aside 30 minutes every day for sport and exercise.
After a coin toss it was decided that affirmative team would be the Owls:
1st speaker Finlay Blanchard
2nd speaker Bill Knoyle
3rd speaker Finn Adelbert
4th speaker George Gregor
The negative team was the Foxes:
1st speaker Georgie Harris
2nd speaker Maddie Smith
3rd speaker Thanusri Gadikota
4th speaker Ava Lau
Curtis Puchner acted as our chair person, being responsible for timing and ringing the bell.
Both teams gave solid arguments. The Owls argued that exercising for 30 minutes a day will
- Make students much fitter and therefore improve the school’s sporting teams performance.
- Improve mental health.
- Will act as a good break.
The Foxes argued that exercising for 30 minutes a day will
- take away time from schoolwork.
- It is unnecessary because we already have set sport times during the week.
It was a close debate, however MVPS affirmative team the owls won. Congratulations!
Manly Vale Public School would like to thank our adjudicator and Curtis for acting as the chair person.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge is well underway – congratulations to the 33 students who have already completed the challenge and successfully entered their books on the PRC website! Do not worry if you have not started yet as there is still plenty of time to get reading.
Reminder
Infants Students (K-2) will be completing the challenge entirely at school. Students will read 30 quality PRC books during library lessons throughout the year. They will receive a participation certificate at the end of the year.
Primary Students (3-6) wishing to complete the challenge are expected to do so independently, with support available from library staff as needed. Students need to read 20 PRC books and enter them into the PRC website by the closing date, Friday 19 August, to qualify for a certificate at the end of the year. Students use their regular school login to access the website.
Reading lists and general rules can be found on the PRC website from the link below.

The Canteen is open at lunch only for frozen treats and snacks. We still encourage you to order as much as possible through Flexischools to reduce crowding at the canteen.
Please remind your children if you order lunch or recess so that they know to pick up their food.
Emergency Lunch Payments
As we approach the end of term, now is a great time to pay any outstanding amounts you may have owing to the canteen. Please make payment via Flexischools using the IOU option.
PSSA Lunch Orders
If your child is participating in PSSA sports on Fridays please remember to select the PSSA option when ordering so that we have their lunch ready for them at the earlier time.
Do not forget to order any drinks or snacks as there is not time to purchase food before leaving. We do not recommend ice blocks due to the limited time they have to eat. Remember no hot foods are to be ordered.
