Principal’s Report

The term seems to be getting away on us all now and teachers are right into writing half yearly reports and assessing students.

Goodluck to our Band

Tomorrow night our Senior and Junior band will perform at Pittwater High as part of the NSWEEE Festival. Ben and Carlos our conductors have been busy preparing our band members for their first performance in 2 years. It will be a very exciting evening for all students and parents. Thank you to Mrs Johnstone who will be there assisting with the organisation.

The Senior Band will also be performing at the 3-6 assembly tomorrow as a warmup for the evening. All Band members need to remember to bring their instruments. Band uniform is not required for this performance at school but will need to be worn on the evening performance at Pittwater High.

Café Owl / PSSA training

We now have Café Owl opening on a Friday morning at 8.00am. Orders for students will close by 8.50am allowing only a 10-minute window for some children to finish their bacon and egg rolls to be ready for the start of school at 9.00am.

Unfortunately, there is not enough time for PSSA teams to order or eat bacon and egg rolls on Friday mornings as they do not arrive back to school from training until 9.00am. Please make sure that PSSA students eat breakfast before training as there is not enough time for them to have a breakfast on their return to school after training on Friday mornings.

Parents need to come to school early with their children if they wish to purchase from Café Owl so that all eating is completed by the 9.00am start.

Head Lice

There have been a couple of cases of head lice reported in Years 5 & 6 over the past few weeks. Please make sure you check your child’s hair if they are scratching and treat the head lice at home through washing not only the hair, but all linen and clothing worn. An email has been sent to all Year 5 parents this week.

Long hair- students who have hair that is longer than shoulder length should have their hair tied up in a ponytail.

School Permission Notes/Payments

We are currently trialling emailing notes home and accepting electronic signatures. Year 5 C.A.R.E.S. notes were emailed this week. If you did not receive an email, please let us know via email so we can confirm we have your correct details.

Playground equipment - out of bounds

The fixed equipment at the front of the school cannot be used by students unless there is a rostered staff member supervising it. After and before school use at pick-up and drop-off times is not permitted. If an accident occurs on the equipment during school times, it is the responsibility of the school even if a parent is supervising. Students are not permitted on the equipment when parents are at Café Owl on Friday mornings.

Bus travel

Congratulations to most of the students who are now showing and tapping their opal cards to ride on the bus. Thank you also to our Year 5 Bus Monitors who are doing a great job at overseeing and reporting behaviour incidents that occur on the bus. It is important that all students follow the guidelines of remaining seated until the bus stops, talking quietly to the person next to them and always showing respect to fellow passengers and the bus driver.

Reconciliation Week

This week most classes have been discussing Aboriginal history and culture as part of our reconciliation week acknowledgment. All students received a Reconciliation arm band in recognition of the traditional custodians of this land, the Saltwater people.

Our Yarning circle at the back of the school has been a tranquil place of outdoor learning for all classes. The stories and yarns shared at our school this week as been our contribution to achieving reconciliation for our future citizens.

Kindergarten Enrolment 2023

I know it sounds early, but our planning for 2023 has begun and our enrolment forms for Kindergarten 2023 have started “rolling in”. If you have a child starting Kindergarten at Manly Vale in 2023 or if you have friends or family in this position, it would be appreciated if you would encourage them to submit their enrolment forms and accompanying documentation (birth certificate, proof of address and immunisation) as soon as possible to assist us with our planning and administration. Enrolment forms can be found online on our school website.

Please see attached below for an overview of the 2023 Transition to School Program.

Reconciliation Arm Bands

This week all students in K-6 received a Reconciliation arm band. We have been wearing them at school and at home, so we can start conversations about Reconciliation.

National Reconciliation Week provides a focus for working towards our goal of an equitable and reconciled Australia. It is a big part of our continuing Reconciliation journey.

Thank you Mrs Lee for our arm bands!

What a great way to start a conversation about Reconciliation!

Let’s Be Brave and Make Change.

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday last week our students joined thousands of other schools across Australia to read Family Tree by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh for National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). NSS is held annually and aims to promote a love of books and reading, as well as give recognition to wonderful Australian authors and illustrators.

We have also been working hard to build a giant Manly Vale Public School family tree in the library. Please enjoy these photos of students participating in this special event.

Stage 3 Project Penguin

So far, our Project Penguin experience has been amazing. We have been to so many different places and already learnt so much about our little colony of Fairy Penguins. Our first excursion was on 3 May to Little Manly and Collins Flat. We learnt about the devastating threats to penguins and how to reduce them. Our next Project Penguin day was on 22 May where we met our magnificent Mackellar mentors and decided on an idea to prevent the extinction of our colony of penguins. Then on the 26 May we travelled to Taronga Zoo to learn about penguins from the experts. We also got to see many other unique animals and learnt about the different ways scientists have helped endangered species. These were fun and educational days and we can’t wait for other Project Penguin days to come!

Project Penguin is an extraordinary program because we get to unleash many great skills. We can showcase our creativity, tech and building skills. We get to work in groups of 3-4 which allows us to build on our teamwork. One thing we like about Project Penguin is that we get to raise community awareness about the Little Penguins and learn about the extraordinary creatures.

Stage 2 & 3 - On Your Soapbox

On Your Soapbox is back at Manly Vale as part of our school’s Speaking and Listening program within literacy. We are so excited to be able to hear all the fabulous speeches that are about to be presented to class teachers.

This is such a fabulous program that leads up to the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition which is a Northern Beaches competition started by an ex-Principal from Balgowlah North Public School, Vicki Trebel, and our former Member for Manly, Mike Baird; 13 years ago. It is a great way of creating an authentic audience within our community and to highlight public speaking as an important and life-long skill.

Stage 2 & 3 will be holding the first stage of the program, the in-class competition, starting from week 9 of this term. This has allowed 3 weeks of preparation to happen at home before being required to present in front of their peers.

We are asking all parents to please ensure their child has written a speech, rehearsed it many times (in front of a mirror, to a parent, recorded it on a device) and ready to go for the Monday of week 9.

A note was sent home with dates, the topics available for each stage, an outline of the competition and the criteria that will be used to mark each speech. You will also find the topics below.

Best of luck to all students in writing their speeches!

Stage 2 Topics (Years 3 & 4)

When I grow up, I want to be…
If I could go back in history I would…
I can help our environment by…

Stage 3 Topics (Years 5 & 6)

Why it is important to protect our koalas.
If I was Premier for a day…
It is important to recycle because…

Joel Cowell AFL News

Joel Cowell competed at the NSW PSSA State Titles for AFL in Coffs Harbour last week. Sydney North lost the grand final to a very well drilled CIS team. The Sydney North Coach was very happy with 2nd given there were 13 regions competing. Joel played so well and it was an amazing experience for him. Congratulations Joel!

K-2 Dance Concert

Our spectacular K-2 dance concert will be on Wednesday 29 June, with the dress rehearsal the day before on Tuesday 28 June. Information will come home via Class Coordinators and students about the details of this concert. Entry to the concert will be a gold coin donation.

This year we have decided to separate the dance showcase into Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, due to the increase of audience members.

The Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) dance showcase will commence approximately around 10:00am.

The Stage 1 (Year 1 & Year 2) dance showcase will commence approximately around 11:30am.

The students who participate in the dance concert will be invoiced $10. This cost covers costumes and props for their performance. If your child is going to be away on this date, please let your teacher know.

We ask that toddlers who attend the showcase be supervised and seated on an adult’s lap, due to the limited number of seats.

The school will not be filming the K-2 dance showcase this year. Unfortunately, parents and visitors are not allowed to film during the dance concert.

Thank you for your understanding.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will open the last Friday of each month 24 June, 8.30am – 9.30am and online for all other dates.
