Principal’s Report

Congratulations to all year 3 & 5 students who have now completed the NAPLAN assessments for the year. The final catch-up day for these assessments is tomorrow Friday 20 May.

Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 20 May

Tomorrow is the National Walk Safely to School day. Students are encouraged to walk or commute safely to school. Please find a group of students from your neighbourhood and walk together to school taking care to cross at the crossings and lights, and be alert of cars on our busy roads.

Café Owl will also have their first open day in two years. Café Owl will open from 8.00am in the morning and be selling bacon & egg rolls on your arrival to school.

Debating Teams

Today our school debating teams debated Allambie Heights Public School and Brookvale Public School. This is our first debate for the year. Congratulations to both teams on their preparation and efforts today. Thanks Mrs Banham and Ms Webster for their work with both teams.

School Tour - Thursday 19 May at 3.30pm

Today we will have our first school tour for the year for all our newly enrolled and interested parents. We will meet at the office and have a quick tour of the school.

OC Applications

Last Friday was the last day to submit applications for the Opportunity Class placement tests. We have 28 students who will now sit the placement test to try and secure a position in the OC Classes of Balgowlah Heights Public School and Neutral Bay Public School for year 5. Good luck to all our Year 4 applicants.

Opportunity Class placement test (nsw.gov.au)

The Opportunity class test will be on 28 July 2022.

RAT tests

Today each child will receive a packet of RAT kits to be used when required. If your child is sick, please make sure you do a test to check if they are negative to COVID. If they have symptoms, they still must remain at home even if they are negative on the test. We have managed to drop numbers of children who are sick this week and we thank all those parents who are keeping their children home if they have coughs and colds.

Late Arrival/ Early Pick up

Please make sure that you leave your child in school from 9.00am to 3.00pm. The office is continually interrupted with students coming late and leaving early, it is imperative that students establish good routines around attendance and punctuality in primary school. Arriving late and leaving early is very disruptive for all classes.

Tina Lee – Principal

Deputy Principal’s Report

Tomorrow is our final day of NAPLAN for Years 3 & Year 5 who sat five tests alongside thousands of other students around the nation. Well done to all students. Regardless of how well each individual student performs in the test, the main thing students need to know is that we are very proud of each and every one of them for the efforts they make to learn every day that they come to school.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy ( https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy ).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal ( https://www.nccd.edu.au ).

A fact sheet for parents and carers can be found below.

Kindergarten Enrolment 2023

I know it sounds early, but our planning for 2023 has begun and our enrolment forms for Kindergarten 2023 have started “rolling in”. If you have a child starting Kindergarten at Manly Vale in 2023 or if you have friends or family in this position, it would be appreciated if you would encourage them to submit their enrolment forms and accompanying documentation (birth certificate, proof of address and immunisation) as soon as possible to assist us with our planning and administration. Enrolment forms can be found online on our school website.

Please see attached below for an overview of the 2023 Transition to School Program.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week!

Congratulations to our Boys and Girls Dance Ensemble Groups

This week our Senior Boys Hip Hop and the Girls Dance ensemble successfully auditioned for the Sydney North Dance Festival. The dance groups are represented by students from Years 3-6 who auditioned at the beginning of the year. Congratulations to both these talented groups, as they were selected to represent Manly Vale Public School at Glen Street Theatre. The boys and girls dance ensemble groups will be performing in a dress rehearsal in Week 9 and a live performance in Week 10 at Glenn Street Theatre. The dance ensemble groups will also be performing again at the K-2 Showcase on Wednesday 29 June.

National Simultaneous Storytime

On Wednesday next week our school will join thousands of others across the country to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS). This event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

The special book that will be shared across schools this year is Family Tree written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh. You might recognise the authors name as being a well-known Australian musician. Family Tree is a heartfelt celebration of family, community, and the seasons of life to cherish and share. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in fun learning activities related to the book throughout the week during library lessons and at lunch.

Ali Webster – Teacher Librarian

K-2 Dance Concert

Our spectacular K-2 dance concert will be on Wednesday 29 June, with the dress rehearsal the day before on Tuesday 28 June. Information will come home via Class Coordinators and students about the details of this concert. Entry to the concert will be a gold coin donation.

This year we have decided to separate the dance showcase into Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, due to the increase of audience members.

The Kindergarten dance showcase will commence approximately around 10:00am.

The Stage 1 (Year 1 & Year 2) dance showcase will commence approximately around 11:30am.

The students who participate in the dance concert will be invoiced $10. This cost covers costumes and props for their performance. If your child is going to be away on this date, please let your teacher know.

We ask that toddlers who attend the showcase be supervised and seated on an adult’s lap, due to the limited number of seats.

The school will not be filming the K-2 dance showcase this year. Unfortunately, parents and visitors are not allowed to film during the dance concert.

Thank you for your understanding.

Café Owl

Café Owl Re-opening

Café Owl reopens on Friday 20 May at 8.00am! Coinciding Walk Safely to School Day, come along and catch up with friends after your walk to school. There will be bacon and egg rolls, hash browns and fresh coffee made by the cafe's dedicated band of parent volunteers. We have a 'tap and go' facility and also take cash.

For those who haven't experienced Cafe Owl, it's in the old canteen - next to the school car park. Cafe Owl raises money for the P&C, contributing to purchases for the school. The cafe has been running for many years, originally sharing the space with the school canteen and then with the builders while the new school was built.

We would love to hear from anyone who might be able to help out on Fridays. Please email Bec at rbccllyd@gmail.com to sign up or to ask any questions.

Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will open the last Friday of each month 27 May and 24 June, 8.30am – 9.30am and online for all other dates.

Canteen News

The Canteen is open at lunch for frozen treats and snacks. We still encourage you to order as much as possible through Flexischools to reduce crowding at the canteen.

Frozen items for years 3-6 will now be handed out from the canteen after lunches have been collected. Kindy-Year 2 will still have their frozen items placed in their lunch bag.

Please remind your children to collect their frozen items from the canteen.

We are now offering Hot Chocolate at recess. Order now on Flexischools as we are only able to offer a small number each day.

Emergency Lunch Payments

Please make payment for any lunches that have been provided by the canteen.

PSSA Lunch Orders

Remember no hot foods are to be ordered.
