Principal’s Report
This week we have begun NAPLAN testing with our year 3 & 5 students. All students from around Australia sit these tests to provide comparative data to inform schools on the directions they need, to support students at their schools. It also gives parents comparative data to see where their child is performing within the grade/stage cohort and the state average.
These tests are in Literacy and Numeracy. They do not assess students’ ability in sport, creative arts, history, geography, music and other learning areas such as science. It is important to put these results into persecutive as it is one test on one day. School assessments also assist teachers to target student’s areas for development. All students in year 3 & 5 will receive a report which will indicate where their child is performing according to the State average. This will complement the assessments and reports that will go home at the end of this term.
Please make sure that your child has early nights and arrives at school on time over the next 2 weeks while these tests are on. Catch up days have been arranged for those students who miss a test due to illness. The last day for catch ups will be Friday 20 May.
Mother’s Day Stall
Last Friday we had a very successful Mother’s Day stall raising $8,700 for the P & C. These funds will go towards Learning and Support programs within the school and providing STEM kits and resources for science. Thank you to all the parents who assisted in the stall and donated prizes for the raffle. It was lovely day for all the children.
PSSA Round 1
The first round of our winter PSSA competition begins tomorrow. Please ensure that all students come prepared to play. Shin pads (soccer), mouthguards (rugby), drink bottles and hats all need to be brought tomorrow in preparation. Manly Vale Public school football socks can be purchased from the uniform shop for $14.

Next week Café Owl will be opening on Friday morning for bacon and egg rolls and hot chocolate. Thank you to Bec Lloyd and the parent volunteers for starting up this initiative again.
Walk Safely to School Day - Friday 20 May
Walk safely to school day will be on Friday 20 May. Students and families (weather permitting) should try and walk to school this day and then maybe drop into Cake Owl for the opening.
Sick at School
It is important that students remain at home if they have any symptoms of COVID (runny nose, coughing, headaches or upset stomach). We realise that it is difficult for families to keep children at home when they only have a cold but this is the advice from NSW Health, so that we limit the transmission of COVID within the school. Parents will be called if students attend school with any of the above symptoms.
We are currently having on average 70 students a day away fighting a variety of illnesses, even though our COVID numbers have dropped this term.
Opportunity Class 2023 – Year 4 students only
Online applications for the 2023 Year 5 Opportunity Class opened on 26 April 2022 and will close at 11.59pm Friday May 13 (tomorrow). No late applications will be accepted after tomorrow. All Year 4 students are able to apply for the Opportunity Class but will need to sit an academic placement test aimed at the Highly Gifted students in the grade. Cross Country Results
2022 Manly Vale Cross Country
This year’s cross country carnival was a huge success. It was reminiscent of old times, with lots of parents and family members there to support and cheer the students on. While the grass was wet and muddy in quite a few places we had some blue sky and shining sun to start, giving us the perfect weather for some long distance running. The participation levels of the students were very impressive. Every student who gave their race a go on the day showed true Manly Vale PS spirit. A further congratulations to all the place getters and runners up.
A big thank you also, to all the teachers who supervised the course, marshalled age groups, warmed students up or recorded results.
Ribbons will be presented at this Friday morning assembly in week 3. They will also take home a note regarding the zone carnival which will be held on Thursday 26 May at Curl-Curl netball courts.

Café Owl
Café Owl Re-opening Café Owl reopens on Friday 20 May at 8.00am! Coinciding Walk Safely to School Day, come along and catch up with friends after your walk to school. There will be bacon and egg rolls, hash browns and fresh coffee made by the cafe's dedicated band of parent volunteers. We have a 'tap and go' facility and also take cash. For those who haven't experienced Cafe Owl, it's in the old canteen - next to the school car park. Cafe Owl raises money for the P&C, contributing to purchases for the school. The cafe has been running for many years, originally sharing the space with the school canteen and then with the builders while the new school was built. We would love to hear from anyone who might be able to help out on Fridays. Please email Bec at rbccllyd@gmail.com to sign up or to ask any questions. |
Ethics Teachers Needed
We are looking for some volunteers interested in supporting the school’s ethics program. Ethics classes are an alternative to non-scripture, teaching our kids to think, reason and discuss a range of ethical issues, whilst learning to respect other points of view and come to a deeper understanding of their own beliefs.
At Manly Vale, we have a very successful program and need more teachers to meet the demand for classes.
No experience needed and online training is provided - the commitment is just a 30 minute class on a Wednesday morning, and 15 minutes to read through the lesson materials beforehand - and all materials are provided so no lesson planning needed!
If you or anyone you know is interested - please contact the ethics coordinator, Tamara Tyler, at tamara@tylermail.com.au or 0439220673
For more information about the ethics program, go to www.primaryethics.com.au
Uniform Shop
The Uniform Shop will open the last Friday of each month 27 May and 24 June, 8.30am – 9.30am and online for all other dates.
