Principal’s Report
What a great way to start week 4 with our Annual Swimming Carnival. A big thank you to Mrs Birrell and Mrs Ward for all their organisation and to our newly appointed House Captains for enthusiastically embracing the first carnival of the year. Congratulations to all competitors who swam for their houses on the day. What a very successful start to the year. The Zone Swimming Carnival is on Wednesday 2 March and our school team is looking stronger than ever.
Thank you to our House captains for 2022:

Dance Starts this week - Ms Vanessa
This week our Kindergarten, Year 1 & 2 classes all had their first dance classes with Ms Vanessa. We are extremely lucky to have a skilled dance teacher to come in and choreograph our dances for the K-2 Dance Concert at the end of Term 2. The children all enjoy performing and learning the many dances Ms Vanessa teaches in her 45-minute lesson each week.
This wonderful experience is an additional cost to parents and will appear in the whole school fees this year. We are hoping that all parents of our Kindergarten, Year 1 & 2 students will be able to attend the concert at the end of Term 2.
Gym Starts this week - Thursdays with Paul
This week our Stage 3 students begin their gymnastic instruction with Paul. Every class in the school will participate in an 8–9-week program with Paul. Our gymnastic instructor Paul is eager and enthusiastic to work with all students again this year. Gym occurs on a Thursday. Stage 1, Stage 2, and Kindergarten will all have gym later this year. Gym is an additional cost to parents and will appear on this year’s fees.
Band 2022
Our band program is up and running again for 2022. Last Wednesday night we have our first band meeting via zoom. All parents of band members are invited to attend the termly band meetings. Thank you to the parent committee:
President - John Logan
Secretary - Hamish Bell
Treasurer - Ruimei Zhang
Senior Band Liaison - Katie Meyer
Junior Band Liaison - Vacant
Instrument Hire - Cath Adelbert
For all the work they do as volunteers for the band. Our two conductors Ben Dickson and Carlos Villanueva are excited to once again be having face to face rehearsals. Band performances are on hold now but will be again a part of our program later this term hopefully. Thank you to Ms Hannah Taylor and Mrs Monica Johnson for overseeing the school organisation for the band.
Parent/Teacher Zoom Meetings - Weeks 7,8,9
We are currently arranging “meet the teacher” one on one zoom chats for the end of term. This will replace our “meet the teacher” evenings we usually have. Interview times will be sent out next week Wednesday 23 February and bookings will close on Wednesday 2 March. You will have the opportunity to meet and chat with your child’s teacher and discuss the transition so far in weeks 7, 8 or 9.
Class Coordinator and Class Email Lists
Teachers are currently sending home forms and letters to parents to obtain permissions for all parents in the class to be a part of a class email list. These email lists will be used as a form of communication from the teacher and the P & C to communicate to the class on events, excursions, fundraising activity, and weekly reminders. Please complete the permission note or form when it comes home so as these lists can be made.
Class coordinators for each class are required to coordinate communication. Please indicate to your child’s teacher if you are willing to take on this role this year.
School Photos - Thursday 3 March
School photo day has been scheduled for Thursday 3 March. Full school uniform is to be worn on this day including black school shoes. Please ensure you have your child ready in full uniform for this day.

Tomorrow will be our final trials for the PSSA summer competition. Thank you to the following coaches and good luck to all our teams as they begin their season on Friday 25 February. The PSSA policy can be found on our school’s website.

Learning from Home
If a student has to isolate due to a household Covid contact, there are lessons that can be done from home. These lessons are used to keep students in touch with their learning whilst isolating. Letters from class teachers have been sent home directing students to this website:
https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/learning-from-home/learning-at-home
Pick up in the afternoon
The main gate is very congested of an afternoon. Please ensure you leave promptly when picking up your child. The kindergarten students are dismissed at 2.50pm daily so it would be appreciated if parents could leave directly to allow the 3.00pm pick up free for other parents.
Older students who can walk home or catch the bus themselves should be encouraged to do so. Try and organise a routine with you children to avoid the congestion at the main gate in the afternoons. A meeting spot further down the road for the older students is a great idea. Students in Years 5 & 6 are encouraged to make their way home independently allowing only the parents of the younger students to meet at the gates.
Please park safely around the school and abide by the 5-10 minute pick up zones.
Late Arrivals/Early Leavers
Please be vigilant on getting your children to school on time. Late arrivals disrupt the classes and learning time.
Also, please minimise leaving early for long weekends etc.
School times are 9.00am – 3.00pm and 2.50pm for kindergarten.
SEE and SRE Induction morning
Next Wednesday 23 February at 9.15am we will have a short welcome induction morning outside Café Owl for all our Ethics and Scripture teachers. Class lists and information will be given out then. Thank you to all the parents and church volunteers for offering their time on a Wednesday morning to teach SRE and SEE to our students.

Swimming Carnival
Thank you to all the staff and students for their wonderful involvement at the Swimming Carnival on Tuesday. The weather was fantastic and participation from the children was excellent. Thank you to the huge majority of parents who respected the school’s request for no parents to attend the carnival. I would like to extend a special thanks to all the extra staff that were involved in helping out on the day with timekeeping, your efforts were appreciated.
Ribbons and announcement of the winning house will be announced at next week’s assemblies. A note will be sent home with students soon if they are to attend the Zone Carnival on Wednesday 2 March. Students who had the fastest 3 times in the 50m freestyle, or the 2 fastest times in all other events will represent Manly Vale Public School at this carnival.
Congratulations to all the students who participated and their wonderful achievements.
Melinda Ward and Sarah Birrell
