Deputy Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
Last Friday was the final day of NAPLAN for Year 3 and Year 5 who sat 5 tests alongside thousands of other students around the nation. Well done to all students. Regardless of how well each individual student performs in the test, the main thing students need to know is that we are very proud of each and every one of them for the efforts they make to learn every day that they come to school.
Zone Cross Country
Congratulations to all those students who represented our school yesterday at Zone Cross Country. It was a very strong field with our very own Eve Goldsworthy taking 2nd place, Belinda Matthews taking 4th place and Daniel Ivanov taking 5th place. Thank you to Mr Dylan and Mrs Ward for supporting this event and taking all students down to Curl Curl yesterday. We wish Eve, Belinda and Daniel good luck at the regionals on 4 June.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
A fact sheet for parents and carers can be found below.
Rugby League Gala Day
Wishing our senior and junior rugby league team and our senior girls 7 a-side team good luck competing at the PSSA Rugby League Gala day taking place next Thursday 3 June at Nolan’s Reserve.
Kindergarten Enrolment 2022
I know it sounds early yet but our planning for 2022 has begun and our enrolment forms for Kindergarten 2022 have started “rolling in”. If you have a child starting Kindergarten at Manly Vale in 2022 or if you have friends or family in this position, it would be appreciated if you would encourage them to submit their enrolment forms and accompanying documentation (birth certificate, proof of address and immunisation) as soon as possible to assist us with our planning and administration. Enrolment forms can be found online on our school website
Early drop off/Late pick up
A reminder that students should not be dropped off into the playground before 8.40am, as teachers are not on supervision duty until that time.
Similarly, students are not supervised after school at 3.00pm and are expected to go directly home unless collected by a parent or relative. Students not collected by 3.10pm will be taken to the office and a phone call made to parents/carers. If you are running late (which happens to us all from time to time) please call the office to let them know.
If you need to drop off early or pick up late on a regular basis, please make use of our Out of School Hours Care, Sustainable OOSH.
We thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation in keeping all students safe.
Thank you, John Gillings
Thank you, John Gillings (Kathy’s Dad 3J) for building a new drum kit stand for our Senior and Junior Band. The stand allows the drums to be set up at all times and easily packed away by the students. We really appreciate all the effort and time John put into making the stand. We are so lucky to have such supportive and dedicated parents associated with our Band program.

Community Weeding Day – Monday 31 May
Tom Hazell and his team of community gardeners will be at school on Monday 31 May from 9.15am to assist in the weeding and maintaining of our nature areas around the school. We would love some parents to get involved with this working bee with a morning tea provided at the end of the couple of hours. If you are able to assist for an hour or two that morning please email the office to register your interest and meet at the office on that day at 9.15am.
K-2 Dance Concert
Our spectacular K-2 dance concert will be on Wednesday 23 June at 11.30am, with the dress rehearsal the day before on Tuesday 22 June. Individual notes will come home via Class Coordinators and students about the details of this concert. Entry to the concert will be a gold coin donation. All parents are welcome to attend. We ask that visitors be kept to 2 per student to allow for everyone to fit comfortably in the school hall. Thank you to Ms Pembroke for her organisation of the event and to Ms Vanessa for her creative choreography.

Library News – Meet the Monitors
Name: Hannah
Class: 5T
Hobbies/Interests: Netball, Reading, Physical Education, Math.
What are you reading at the moment? Alice Miranda On Holiday (number 2)
What is your favourite book? How to Train Your Dragon (series) by Cressida Cowell
Who is your favourite character and what makes them so special? I like Camicazi in How to Train Your Dragon. She is always so enthusiastic and optimistic (looking on the bright side of things). She is a tiny bog burglar similar to Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. They work well together with Fishlegs as well.
Describe the perfect reading spot: Sitting or lying on something comfy (bean bag, couch etc), reading your favourite book is the perfect thing to do. The perfect reading spot and also the perfect book.
What's your favourite thing about our school library? That we can share our learning in reading, get together and relax and just being able to be free to read a book in silence and also being able to relax at lunch times.
When it's your turn to write, what do you enjoy writing about? Mystery stories, often with the name Coco in it.
Can you recommend a book and tell us what you loved about it? A book to recommend for years 2-6 is How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell. She is so amazing, the best storyteller ever! She describes everything perfectly. They are so enjoyable. For kindy and year 1 I would recommend reading rainbow magic (for example, Freya the Friday Fairy). I quite enjoyed them when I was little. I always wanted to read the whole series when I was younger.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Last Wednesday 19 May our school joined almost 2 million other Australians for National Simultaneous Storytime. We listened to a story read to us from the International Space Station (ISS) by NASA astronaut Shannon Walker. Students enjoyed many space-related activities in classrooms as well as a space-themed week in the library. Activities included a collaborative build-a-rocket challenge, alien finger puppets, mindful space colouring and watching a live feed video from the ISS. Some of us were lucky enough to spy the Northern Lights and a comet! Take a look at these photos from our week.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking
The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking school finals will be held this Friday morning in the school hall. We are very excited to hear all of the competitors performing. They have spent many hours writing and practising their speeches and preparing for the delivery of an impromptu speech. Under the guidance of Mrs Lucey, they have polished their voice projection and expression.
The multicultural topics that inspired students’ speeches are:
Stage 2 |
Stage 3 |
Stronger together |
Stronger together |
We are one and free |
Racism: it’s everyone’s business |
Racism – no way! |

Mrs Banham, Mrs Lucey and the GATS Committee
Stage 1 STEM Challenge
Year 1 and 2 students have been busy learning about the properties of different materials. They have gained an understanding of how particular materials suit a specific purpose and that scientists conduct tests to find the best materials before designing a product. The students were given the task of designing their own face mask that follows Government guidelines. The focus and problem-solving skills the students demonstrated as they cut, shaped and sized their masks were excellent. Although messy at times, it is opportunities like these that allow students to celebrate their understanding of classroom content in an engaging and rewarding manner. Great work Stage 1!

Write for Fun Competition
Congratulations to 3J students Amelie A-J, Sophie S, Savannah L, Solara B, Oscar B, Maddie W, Gus M, and Louis F. for their enthusiasm and dedication in entering the Write 4 Fun Competition. The stories of all eight students have been selected to go into the second round of judging.
