Principal’s Report

It is great to have some normality return to our school routines and wonderful to have our parents join us for the annual cross-country carnival last Tuesday. As the restrictions have now eased we would like to invite parents back to assembly on Friday mornings at 9.00am. If your child is receiving an award or being acknowledged please feel free to make your way up to the K-2 COLA on a Friday morning at 8.55am in preparation for the assembly. It is best to leave it to that time as the area is very congested in the mornings with the K-2 students.

We would like to reintroduce Café Owl but we still have not had anyone volunteer to coordinate. Chris Nicholls has offered to cook and buy the supplies but we still need someone to organise the volunteers, collect the money and bring to the office (Friday) and coordinate the rosters for each Friday. If you are interested please email the school.

ANZAC Day Service - Friday 23 April

We had a beautiful K-6 service led by our school leadership team. It was a very moving service and our leaders were exceptional in leading us through the meaning, the remembrance, the Last Post and the National Anthem. All the students wore poppies. It was a great way to commemorate ANZAC day for our students.

Kindy Excursion to “Pete the Sheep” at Glen Street Theatre

Our Kindy students attended the live theatre production of “Pete the Sheep” last Thursday. It was their first excursion for the year. Their behaviour was commended by the staff at Glen Street and the bus drivers that took them there. The teachers were very proud and impressed with all of their students.

Bushlink

K-2 students were involved in a wonderful experience of weeding our native bushland. Bushlink an organisation that employs people with a disability came and assisted with the weeding and identifying weeds with our students. They will be returning to work with the 3-6 students next term.

Thank you to Tom Hazell (granddad of Alana and Ben Hazell) for his assistance with the day. Tom previously worked in the school Bushcare group and is happy to guide any parents who wish to be a part of a school Bushcare group. We need to keep on top of the weeds and will require assistance from our local community. If you are willing to assist or coordinate bush care maintenance within the school, please email Mrs Lee. We would like to set up a parent Bushcare group to assist with the ongoing maintenance of our school. Our students are all eager to assist as well.

Interrelate Family Evening - Monday 3 May – 6.00pm-8.00pm

All parents and their children are invited to attend the Interrelate parent evening on Monday 3 May. The sessions are:

  1. Where did I come from? (years 3 & 4)
  2. Preparing for Puberty (years 5 & 6)

NAPLAN - 10 May - 21 May (weeks 4 & 5)

All year 3 and 5 students must sit the tests. The tests are online and information has been sent home in the newsletter for the past few weeks.

https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

All funding and support come from the results of these tests, so it is imperative that all students sit the tests whether they can complete them or not.

Disability adjustments are given to students who require them to access the test. Adjustments include; Extra time, rest breaks, and sitting the test in a separate location. Notes would have been sent home to parents for approval for these adjustments.

Lost Property

Please remember to name your items – drink bottles, lunch boxes, hats and clothing!

P & C Meeting - Tuesday 27 April

Last Tuesday we had our Parent and Community (P & C) meeting. Thank you to all those who attended. The 2020 Annual School Report along with the new School Improvement Plan was presented at this meeting. Copies can be found on the school’s website along with the minutes of the P & C meetings.

The new School Improvement Plan (SIP) has the following strategic directions for the next 4 years.

  1. Student Growth and Attainment (students) - This incorporates student growth and improvement in NAPLAN bands and internal school tests. Targets have been given by the Department of Education for all schools. Our school targets are available on the website.
  2. Reflective Practitioners Embedding High Impact Pedagogy (Teachers) - Teachers will focus on improving their practice using evidence-based pedagogy. Using collaborative practice and future-focussed strategies to provide the best possible learning environment for students to learn.
  3. Connected Community Supporting High expectations for Student’s learning - Implementing workshop and forums for parents and community to have a greater understanding of school expectations and assessment strategies. Community partnerships and consultation to create connectedness where we are all working together towards common goals and understandings. Community supporting student achievement.

Attendance – late & early leavers, whole day absence

It is important that students attend school every day. We seem to have had an increase in student absenteeism which impacts on their academic, social and emotional development. Please organise holidays in the school holiday period. Please support your child’s educational journey by making sure that they come to school every day, on time. Late arrivals to school are very disruptive to classroom routines as are early departures.

Sports News

Congratulations to Charli Lehmann and Eve Goldsworthy who were both selected in the combined Manly and Pittwater Zone Girls’ Soccer Team. The girls attended the Sydney North gala day on Monday and were exceptional representatives of our school and our combined zones. The girls performed incredibly well winning all five games. Charli and Eve both made the eighteen selected for the possibles vs probables game with Eve then being selected for the Sydney North team, a great effort.

Congratulations to Harry Bromiley (11 Years) and Alex Matheson (Open age group) for their selection in the Sydney North Rugby League Teams.

Congratulations Lexi Slatter who gained selection in the Manly Zone Netball Team.

The standard of athletes at these trials is very high so it is excellent to see Manly Vale students excel in these sports.

Well done to Hudson McLaren, Hannah Huisman and our girls Senior Relay Team (Hannah, Iona, Charli and Isabella) who represented Manly Vale at the State Swimming Championships at the end of last term. Hudson swam in the all age 5 x 50m relay and his team came 4th. Hudson also came 11th in 9yrs 50 free with a PB 35.62. Hannah came 5th in the 50m Butterfly and the girls relay came 11th overall. We are super proud of you all.

Manly Vale Public School would also like to congratulate ex student Olivia Inkster on being crowned National Champion in the U17 400m event at the National Athletic Championships. Olivia also picked up a silver medal in the U17 200m. Such an incredible talent.

2021 Manly Vale Cross Country

We had a wonderful day down at David Thomas on Monday for this year’s school cross country carnival. All the children gathered in green, blue, red or yellow shirts to cheer their class mates on as they ran either their 2km or 3km track. The participation and effort given from all the athletes was incredible. A huge thank you to all the teachers who stood around the course cheering, marshalling, or recording results.

Congratulations to students who placed in the top 6. Ribbons will be presented at the Friday morning assembly in week 3 (7 May). A district note will be going home soon regarding the zone carnival which will be held on Tuesday 25 May at Curl-Curl netball courts.

Stewart House Donation Drive 2021

Celebrating 90 years of caring for public school children in need from all parts of NSW and the ACT. Our journey began with the vision and drive of the staff of NSW public schools, who petitioned for a facility to address the declining health of school children during the height of the Great Depression. Into our future, as is repeated throughout our rich 90-year history, we will continue to deliver our unique residential program by adapting to the ever-changing landscape of hardships encountered by thousands of children.

The Stewart House Donation Drive has been our major annual fundraising event in NSW public schools. Staff and students are encouraged to enter the draw, for as little as $2.00, you could win a prize valued at $4,000. Envelopes have been distributed and are due back by no later than Wednesday 19 May 2021.
