Principal’s Report

This week was certainly a different week for us all with the closing of the school last Tuesday. In my 30 plus years of being associated with schools this has never happened. I hope you all stayed safe and your families and friends survived the catastrophic bushfires that raged through various parts of the state. It was certainly a relief to know that we didn’t have to endure an evacuation at Manly Vale Public School. It was only 2 weeks ago that we practised our evacuation drills but we were glad that we didn’t have to go through the procedure as a real life experience. Apologies for all those parents whose work was interrupted this week with childcare centres and schools closing around our area. Our thoughts go out to all those people who lost homes and loved ones in these fires. Acknowledgment and thanks must go to our Royal Fire Service and emergency services for their outstanding efforts in protecting lives and property.

Showcase 2019

Last Thursday night our bands, choir, dance and drama groups, and our lunchtime creative arts groups including ukulele and guitar, performed for approximately 250 parents and community members. Our Art Shack produced a visual display at the back of the hall to be viewed by the audience as well. We had some extremely talented individual performers along with spectacular group items. Congratulations to all the students who performed in this concert. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. There was $1482 raised in the night with ticket sales and a raffle. All proceeds will go towards purchasing new instruments for the school. Thank you for your support of the evening. Special thanks to Miss Stacey, Miss Taylor and the Band conductors and committee for their organisation of the evening, the set up and pack up afterwards.

Remembrance Day - Monday 11 November 2019

Last Monday our senior students attended the Balgowlah RSL Remembrance Day service down at Manly Dam. Mia Lougher represented our school delivering a presentation on the ‘Japanese Attack on Sydney Harbour 1942’. Mia is to be congratulated on her research and excellent delivery of her speech to the returned servicemen and women, principals, teachers and students from a range of local schools.

Back at school our Year 4 SRC representatives hosted a special assembly for the remainder of the school. It was lovely to see the students made wreaths and poppies decorating our school. Thank you to all the students who were involved in these important services.

P&C Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 19 November 7.00pm

Last Tuesday we had to postpone our P & C AGM to next Tuesday 19 November. All parents and community members are welcome to attend the evening but only paid up members can vote in the night or stand for positions. Our current position holders are:

President- Mr James Fewtrell
Vice President- Mrs Helen Gay
Treasurer- Mr Tony Sherlock
Fundraising Coordinator- Ms Lee Meredith
Secretary- Mrs Karen Murtgatroyd
Class Coordinator Liaison- Mrs Kristen Te Pania

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our executive members on the P & C and thank them for their contributions this year. End of year drinks will follow the meeting. All welcome.

Choir - Performance at Estia Nursing Home

Tomorrow our school choir will perform at the Estia Nursing Home in Manly Vale. Our junior band performed there earlier this year and now our choir will follow up this performance. Mrs Lucey and Ms Mason will escort the choir down to the nursing home to perform a couple of their favourite songs. This is a great experience for all involved.

Good Luck PSSA Eagle Tag teams

Our Junior A Girls & Boys Eagle Tag PSSA teams will be competing in the semi-finals tomorrow. We wish them all the best in their games. All other PSSA teams will be playing “friendly” games for the afternoon at various venues.

Year 5 Leadership Day - Thursday 21 November

Next week all of our year 5 students will participate in a leadership day in preparation for the upcoming elections of leadership positions in the school. All year 5 students are able to stand for a variety of positions next year including School Captain and Vice-Captain, year 6 leaders, class managers, house captain and SRC representatives. The leadership day will give all year 5 students the opportunity to practise and master leadership skills and activities which will assist them with their duties in the future. Thank you Mrs Blackband for organising this experience for our senior students.

Parking

Please do not park across the neighbour’s driveways during pick up and drop off. Last week one of our neighbours was unable to get his car out of the carpark as his driveway was blocked by a parent.

School Fee Reminder

Term 4 reminders will be sent out next week. Year 6 leaving students need to finalise their accounts before the end of November. If you are experiencing financial difficulty please contact Mrs Lee.

Remembrance Day 2019

On Monday 11 November, Stage 3 students walked down to Manly Dam to attend a Remembrance Day commemorative ceremony. Our students represented the school with pride, acknowledging the sacrifices of service men and women past and present. Mia Lougher, one of our School Captains had prepared a well-researched speech on the submarine attacks on Sydney Harbour on 31 May 1942. She delivered her speech with great emotion and empathy and received acknowledgement from the Manly Dam Trust for her outstanding effort. Joshua Slatter and Diya Malhotra laid a book at the memorial on behalf of Manly Vale Public School.

School Student Transport Scheme 2020 Applications (including Opal Cards)

School Student applications for 2020 open from Friday 11 October 2019. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

  • Are continuing at the same school;
  • Are residing at the same address;
  • Have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport of NSW.

Where a student meets a new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to the link below:

https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.
