Principal’s Report
Last Saturday night we had our annual Trivia Night organised by the P&C. As usual Manly Vale Public School enjoyed dressing up in anything that began with “M” or “V” combining it with the theme of “Old and New school days”. From Vikings to Mexicans, Mafia, Meat and Vegetables and the teachers “Masquerading as Manly Vale teachers”, everyone got into the evening and made a huge effort to get into the theme and enjoy themselves. The evening raised approximately $20,000 for the P&C which will go towards a new sound and AV system for the hall.
Thank you to Lee Meredith and Kris Welsh for their organisation of the event, Kim Graham for hosting the evening and coordinating the trivia questions, Noel Meredith for adjudicating the score sheets and collecting the money, for all the parents who donated prizes, to all the parents and community members who came on the night and supported the auction and trivia competition, Kristen Te Pania for her communication to the Class Coordinators, Kate Williams who organised the ticket sales, Barry our GA who assisted with the set up, and to the teachers who came in support of the evening. It was a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. A big thank you to the families (Meredith and Welsh) who came and cleaned up the next day and ensured the hall was ready for school on Monday. This was truly a community event and a great way to christen our new school hall. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this event.

Year 2 Swim School
The next two weeks our Year 2 students will be attending the “Learn to Swim” program at Manly Pool. This is a Department of Education initiative to support all children to learn to swim and reach a level of competence in which they can save themselves. Although many of our students are able to swim the program allows for children to work on stroke correction and efficiency and overall improve their water safety skills. The swimming teachers work alongside our classroom teachers. Thank you to Mrs Warnock for organising the 2-week program for our students.
Kindergarten 2020
Next week we will have the final part of our Kindergarten Orientation program with a picnic at Manly Dam on Wednesday 6 November at 10.00am. The program has been very successful and we now have 83 students ready to start in Kindergarten next year. Thank you to Mrs Lucey, Mrs Robertson, Ms Taylor and Ms Mason for all their work in providing a smooth transition for our new enrolments. If you still have concerns about school readiness please contact the school by making an appointment with Mrs Lee or Mrs Lucey over the next few weeks.
CAPA Performance Night - Thursday 7 November 6.30pm
Next week we will celebrate the school’s Creative Arts programs including band, choir, drama and dance groups with an end of year concert in our school hall. Specialist programs including the Lucid Music lunchtime guitar and Ukulele groups, and Col’s Music Keyboard groups will perform items on the night displaying the individual and group talents. Everyone is invited to attend the evening and enjoy seeing these groups perform. Our lunchtime Art Shack groups will also be displaying various pieces of artworks around the hall. If you wish to come and see these various programs please purchase tickets from Flexi schools using the link below or come long on the night and pay cash at the door. The tickets are $5 each or $10 for a family. We look forward to wrapping up our Creative Arts programs for 2019 with this a whole school event. Thank you to Ms Stacey for her overall organisation of the event and to all the teachers, tutors, band conductors, musicians and artists who have contributed to the evening. Special thanks to Lou Knowles for designing and distributing flyers to our school and local community advertising the event.

Year 4 Rocks Excursion – Stepping into the past!
Last Tuesday, Year 4 students headed off to explore The Rocks of Sydney, stepping back in time to 1788. Students transformed into real historical figures from the time and learned about their life and roles within the colony. These new convicts, free settlers, doctors and governors roamed the streets of their past, hearing stories of what day-to-day life was like for the Europeans and Aboriginals at the time.
After our walking tour, we enjoyed lunch by Circular Quay and competed in a ‘Vivid’ inspired sketching challenge of the Opera House.
Many thanks to our wonderful teachers and students for making the day such fun!

Year 3 Diwali Celebrations
On Monday 21 October all Year 3 students engaged in a Diwali celebration (Sunday 27 October). The students had a wonderful afternoon of painting traditional candle holders, creating rangoli artworks and tasting traditional vegetarian curry. Thank you Rupa Sharma for taking time out to create your magnificent curry that was enjoyed by all students and teachers! We are so appreciative we had the opportunity to try your delicious food. We hope you got to see our rangoli art that was on the amphitheatre stairs!

School Student Transport Scheme 2020 Applications (including Opal Cards)
School Student applications for 2020 open from Friday 11 October 2019. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:
- Are continuing at the same school;
- Are residing at the same address;
- Have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport of NSW.
Where a student meets a new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to
https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails
Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2019, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.
Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.
