Principal’s Report
Thank you to everyone who supported this year’s school spell-a-thon. We have raised over $13,000 as a school which will go towards the purchase of the new laptop and iPad charging and security cabinets. All students enjoyed eagerly learning the words for the spell-a-thon. Thank you to Lee Meredith and the fundraising team for their efforts and to all the parents who came in on a Friday to count up the donations. There were some outstanding fundraising efforts with 1/2S being awarded the top fundraising class for the school. Thank you to the following students who were the top fundraisers for their grade:

Dancesport and Hip Hop Spectacular - Monday 23 September
Last Monday we had our final dance concert for the year. Our year 5 students demonstrated their ballroom dancing expertise by performing the salsa, jive, cha cha and tango in front of all the parents. Gordon Gilkes the Dancesport founder and CEO came to watch and present our finalists with their medals from the Dancesport Challenge evening.
Our Year 3 & 4 students also performed their hip hop dances in front of their parents to conclude a term of dance with Miss Vanessa our dance teacher. The Stage 2 students have had 10 weeks of hip hop and enjoyed demonstrating their moves to their families and friends. Thank you to all parents for their support of our dance programs at the school.

Farewell Ms Jaala Kemp
This Friday will be the last day for Ms Kemp. She will be taking a year’s maternity leave and probably won’t return to us until 2021. Ms Kemp has been an outstanding teacher of Kindergarten, Year 2 & Year 4 at Manly Vale. We thank her for her commitment and passion for drama in the school and for leading programs in English and Gifted & Talented education. Ms Kemp will be sadly missed by all the staff and especially the students at Manly Vale.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms Kemp for her positive contributions to our school and wish her and her partner Tim all the best for the upcoming birth of their first child. We all look forward to her coming in to visit next term with her “bundle of joy”.
Goodluck Ms Bianca Murray
Ms Murray from 4M will be getting married these school holidays returning to Term 4 as Mrs Martin. On behalf of the staff and students at Manly Vale Public School I would like to wish Ms Murray and her fiancée Pat all the best for their special day. This is a very exciting time for them both.
Holiday works
The school will not be accessible for parents and students during the holidays. Only the students attending the holiday program with the OOSH will be able to enter the school grounds. There is a lot of work to be completed during this 2 weeks and it is advisable that all students stay away from the school at this time.
School Upgrade – Update from the Department of Education
Over the last month work has continued on the upgrade of the school. The area around the old canteen has had concrete poured and turf has been laid; work on the new driveway behind the office continues, which will provide access to a small carpark under the hall; and landscaping and planting in the north-west corner of the site has been completed.
The area behind the school, to the west, will be opened up once some extra turf is laid and some additional fencing is installed.
The oval is available for school-designated use, but still needs some more time for the grass to knit properly before it can be open all the time. Hopefully the warmer Spring weather can help there.
Officially, the whole school upgrade is scheduled for completion in early 2020, however, the project team is hopeful that all areas would have been handed over by the end of this year.
Band Tour - Wednesday 16 October - Friday 18 October (Term 4 Week 1)
On our return from the holidays our senior school band will be attending a band tour to the Bathurst and Blue Mountain region. The band will perform at a variety of schools in that area as well as have some valuable learning experiences at the Bathurst Goldfields and Featherdale Wildlife Park. Thank you to Ben Dickson our conductor for his organisation of the tour and to Ms Stacey & Ms Taylor who have also assisted with the organisation and will be attending the camp with the band. It will be a memorable few days for all our students. The band tours every 3 years so that year 4, 5 & 6 students who are in the band do get to participate once during their time involved in the band. This year Mrs Lee will also be visiting the camp for the 2 nights. Please ensure all notes and money are returned to school by this Friday 27 September.
Tick Season
Please be extra vigilant during tick season. Please be advised that the office staff will not remove ticks but will ring parents. This is standard policy as when a tick is removed children can sometimes have an allergic reaction.
Term 4 – begins Monday 14 October
Next term there is no Staff Development Day so all students return to school on Monday 14 October. If you are planning to be away the first week back please ensure that you have sent in a letter (domestic travel) or applied for a Certificate of Leave (overseas travel), to cover your child’s absence during this time. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy holiday! Thank you for a great term!

Science Incursion
Last week Stage 1 students participated in a science incursion provided by Kaleidoscope Science. The focus of the performance was light and sound, and at every opportunity students were excited to participate in hands-on experiments. Balloons, lasers, percussion instruments, water, a metal slinky, colour wheels, plastic straws, glow sticks and a minion were just some of the many resources used to investigate how sound and light are created and transported. We hope the curiosity sparked from this experience is continued not only in the classroom but at home as well.
