Principal’s Report

Stage 3 have only just come back from their Canberra camp and then Year 5 competed in the Dancesport Gala concert out at Homebush last Monday evening. 38 of our year 5 students paired up to compete against other schools in the region to determine the best ballroom dancers performing the Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa and Jive. It was a fantastic night and parents and students were impressed with the level of competition and the outstanding performances witnessed on the night. Congratulations to all our Year 5 students on their participation in the program and thankyou to Brad Humphreys our wonderful coach, Mrs Birrell, Mrs Cash, Mrs Radan and Mrs Ward for their ongoing support and encouragement of the program and students, and to Year 5 for “having a go” at something completely different and outside their comfort zone.

We will have a Ballroom Dancing display on Monday 23 September (week 10) at 1.40pm with all parents welcome to come and watch, along with a Hip Hop demonstration from our Stage 2 students. This will finalise all our dance programs for the year with only Year 6 to participate in a contemporary dance program in the lead up to their farewell.

Spell-A-Thon

Tomorrow Friday 13 September will be the last day to bring in or bank money online for the Spell-A-Thon, if you wish to be considered in the prize category. Thank you to all those parents and students who have returned their sponsorship forms and money already. We would like to finalise all banking next week and present prizes on the 20 September Friday morning assembly.

Thank you to every parent and grandparent, friend or sibling who has sponsored and supported this fundraiser. We have now purchased the computer charging cabinets for every classroom and students are excited to have their devices ready and charged for lessons. Special thanks to Lisa Lougher who came into count the donations last Friday. This was a Year 6 fundraiser so if you are a parent of a Year 6 students and can give 1 hour of your time this Friday to count and sort money, please report to the office after 9.00am on Friday morning.

P & C Meeting - Tuesday 10 September

Last Tuesday we had our last P & C meeting for the term. Mrs Aga Banham presented all the gifted and talented programs that are currently being supported by the P & C and the positive impact they are having on all students.

We now have 4 debating teams including 2 trainee teams from Year 4, Chess Club, and Finalists in public speaking competitions and Operation Art displays at Homebush. Our choir, dance ensembles and drama groups ae all performing at regional and state level, and students in every grade having access to a variety of extension programs including Maths Olympiad, Tournament of the Minds, extension writing workshops and numeracy and problem solving programs. We appreciate all the work Mrs Banham puts into her role as the Gifted and Talented Coordinator for the school and the passion she has for extending students in their areas of interest.

The principal report covered events that had occurred throughout the term and a summary of the new Enrolment policy guidelines from the Department Of Education. Manly Vale Public School will not be accepting out of area applications unless there are extenuating circumstances as to why a family cannot attend their local school. An enrolment panel will be meeting in Term 4 to discuss out of area applications.

Currently we have 85 students enrolled for Kindergarten next year and enrolment checks will be occurring from the 18 November for all enrolments. Proof of enrolment will need to be presented to the front office from this date. Siblings will be automatically accepted if the sibling is still at Manly Vale Public School at the time of enrolment.

Next Monday will be our final Kindergarten Orientation session for the year. Please make sure you have completed an enrolment form by this date and submitted it to the office for processing. Address checks will occur from 18 November.

Our school uniform shop will be represented and will be open for purchases after the presentation. If you are able to help out in the uniform shop this day it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Wendie McDougall on wendie@me.com. The expectation is that most parents will be purchasing the uniform on Monday to avoid the rush later in the year.

ICAS Tests

All our ICAS assessment tests are being held after school on Level 3 of M Block. These are the spare classrooms next to the computer room and library. Last Tuesday we had the Writing assessment. Next week we have the following assessments occurring:

Tuesday 17 September – English – Yrs 3 & 4 3.15pm – 4.15pm & Yrs 5 & 6 3.15pm-4.30pm

Thursday 19 September- Mathematics - 3.15pm – 4.15pm

Please ensure you notify the After School Care if your child is attending these tests and pack afternoon tea for them on that day. Thank you Ms Thomson for all your work in organising these tests. Please remember that these ICAS assessments are a competition. They are not based on our current curriculum. Most students will receive a “participation” ranking for these assessments.

Band Workshop Day - Saturday 14 September

This Saturday all of our band students will be participating in tutorial workshops and whole band rehearsal as part of a whole school workshop day. The band is currently preparing for the Band Tour in Term 4 along with a variety of other concerts that will be occurring in Term 4. Thank you to our conductors Ben and Carlos for their attendance on this day and to Ms Taylor and Ms Stacey for assisting on your day off.

Thank you to the parents who have offered to assist with supervision and the tidying up and organising of music on the day. This workshop day replaces our Band camp for this year as we are participating in a Band Tour in Week 1 Term 4 to the Bathurst and Blue Mountain regions.

School Upgrade

School Upgrade – Update

Over the last month work has continued on the upgrade of the school. The area around the old canteen has had concrete poured and turf has been laid; work on the new driveway behind the office continues, which will provide access to a small carpark under the hall; and landscaping and planting in the north-west corner of the site has been completed.

The area behind the school, to the west, will be opened up once some extra turf is laid and some additional fencing is installed.

The oval is available for school-designated use, but still needs some more time for the grass to knit properly before it can be open all the time. Hopefully the warmer Spring weather can help there.

Officially, the whole school upgrade is scheduled for completion in early 2020, however, the project team is hopeful that all areas would have been handed over by the end of this year.

Tournament of Minds

On Sunday 1 September fourteen of our wonderful students participated in the Tournament of Minds Regional Competition at Roseville College. Our students worked together in teams of seven over a six-week period to develop a solution to their given Long-Term Challenge.

Our Arts team delivered a very entertaining, Australian take on the well-known ‘Wizard of Oz’ story and were commended on their humour and organisation skills. The STEM team showcased their outstanding engineering skills and produced a carousel model using recycled materials. In addition to their Long-Term Challenge, our teams had only 5 minutes to respond to the Spontaneous Challenge stimulus. Students were scored by a team of judges based on a number of criteria, including problem solving, ability to work as a team and presentation skills.

We are so proud of both teams for the commitment, determination, creativity and team work that they have displayed throughout the programme. Congratulations to the STEM team who received ‘Honours’ for their excellent achievement in this prestigious competition.
