Thank you to the parents in KL and KR who organised a morning tea for our new parents to the school, it was very well received and to Mrs Ann Baleisis for serving tea and coffee to our guests. All of the new kindergarten students were very settled and the parents enjoyed hearing from our Before and After school care facility (Primaryoshcare) and Mrs Lucey.
Our next Orientation afternoon will be on Thursday September 5 from 1.45pm- 2.45pm. Our Ethics coordinator Lorna Galt will be speaking at this session along with a representative from school banking.

Book Week - “Reading is my Super Hero”
We have had a wonderful celebration of Book Week 2019. Our Book Parade yesterday was a great success along with our K-2 author visit “Royal Jelly.” The Book Fair will continue for the remainder of the week from 8.00am-9.00am and 3.00pm-4.00pm on Level 3 in the yellow classrooms next to the IT room. Thank you to Mrs Clair O’Connor for all her organisation of the week and to Mrs Ann Baleisis for assisting with the Book Fair. It was lovely to see so many students buying books to read at home and donate to our new library.
The Book Parade was a great success with teachers and students dressing up as their favourite book characters.

Congratulations Kirsten Evans
Kirsten Evans in class 5R who is one of our talented writers has been awarded a “Gold” award in the 2019 Write On competition. Kristen will receive her award at the State Library tomorrow Friday 23 August. A very proud moment for her and the school. Well done Kirsten!
SASS Recognition Week - Next week
Next week we will take the opportunity to thank and acknowledge our wonderful office staff - Pam Davison, Luise Nealon, Annabel Marsden and Ann Baleisis. Along with our School Learning and Support Officers Peter Snailham, Mary Garth, Jayne Crain, Stephanie Davison, Justine Brabant and our General Assistant Barry Warriner. These support staff play a vital role in supporting our teachers and students at Manly Vale Public School. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our support staff and thank them for the wonderful work they do. They are often the ones who are taking care of sick children, organising special days and functions, booking buses, following up lost property and children, and being the first to lend a helping hand to staff and community. Thank you for all that you do for all of us!
Spell-A-Thon 2019
Next week we will have our spelling test of words for all students to conclude our school Spell-A-Thon. Children should be finalising their sponsorship now with all sponsor forms to be brought to school on Friday 30 August for signing. Money will be collected after the spelling test with all money due in by Friday 13 September. Please support this fundraiser by making a small donation.
Father’s Day Breakfast - Friday 30 August
We will be hosting a Father’s Day sausage sizzle on Friday 30 August from 7.00am-9.00am. There will be a coffee van available on the day but you can order a sausage and a hot drink through Flexischools website at the link below. Unfortunately there has been a technical issue with Flexischools website, which should be rectified by the end of the week.
http://www.flexischools.com.au/
There will be open classrooms and school tours with Mrs Lee, as well as a performance by our school choir. Please come along and join in the fun. Our school Friday morning assembly will conclude the breakfast with the School Athletics ribbons being presented that morning.
Year 5 & 6 Camp to Canberra - Monday 2 September - Wednesday 4 September
This year our year 5 & 6 students will spend 3 days in our capital city Canberra learning about our government and democratic system. The excursion has been organised by our Stage 3 teachers who will all be attending. Please make sure that you have made your final payment for this excursion by the end of the week. Buses and accommodation need to be confirmed.
Parking
Please do not park across the neighbour’s driveways surrounding the school. Our neighbours are supportive of our school and it is disappointing to hear that some parents are deliberately parking them in at drop off and pick up times. Please do not park across driveways or use the car park at these busy times.
Updated Enrolment Policy 2019

Waste Free Wednesday
Thank you to all of the families who participated in waste free Wednesday. Congratulations to this week’s winners:
6D
Junior Boys PSSA Soccer Champions!
Last Friday August 16 our Junior Boys played in a gruelling match against Seaforth in the PSSA grand final. After a big game the score was nil all and the boys played extra time still with no goals being scored! The schools were declared joint premiers and were awarded with a trophy and certificates. Champion patches will be given out this week.
After a terrific season and remaining undefeated the boys showed real grit and skill on the day and had a vocal “Sea of Red” supporting them on the sideline. I’d like to thank both the Junior Boys team and the Senior Boys teams for a fun year. It’s been a remarkable season with amazing enthusiasm and camaraderie.
Here’s to next year!
Coach Ms Cash
PSSA Junior Netball Champions
Congratulations to our very talented junior netball team who won their grand final last Friday against Dee Why Public School. The girls are to be commended on playing an excellent team game. Brooke, Gabby and Kate F demonstrated impressive shooting, scoring a total of 12 points with a final score 12-3. A huge thank you to our parents who helped transporting the girls to the netball courts and to all our supporters on the day, including Mrs Lee.

Manly Vale Athletics Carnival 2019
Last Monday we held our school Athletics Carnival down at David Thomas Reserve. It was great to see all of our students dressed up to support their school house and participate in races to gain points. Thank you to all parent helpers who volunteered their time to help out with the running of the carnival on the day. Whether time keeping or judging, your help was immensely appreciated. Also to the parents who set up our mini school canteen on the day. We love our community spirit, it’s what keeps us being ‘us’.
Results from the carnival will be posted in next week’s newsletter and ribbons will be presented to students at next Friday’s morning assembly 30 August. Parents, please feel free to come along if your child is to be presented with a ribbon.
Next Wednesday (28 August) and Thursday (29 August) is the Zone Athletics Carnival at Narrabeen Sports Centre. Wednesday is the 1500m and Field events and Thursday will be the 800m and Track events. Students who qualified to represent our school at the zone level will be notified and given a permission note to be returned as soon as possible to their class teachers. Congratulations to those students, and all students who ran at our carnival.
Stage 2 Science Excursion
Last week year 3 & 4 students went on an excursion to Fisherman’s Beach, Long Reef. Students spent a whole day exploring the coastal environment and learnt about rock formations present there. They were surprised to discover that rocks can be light and breakable as opposed to hard and heavy. Moreover, some rocks, like claystone, are perfect to make a paste to paint their faces! Students learnt the difference between erosion and weathering and could point out examples of each at the beach.
Students were thrilled to explore the rock pools and handle with utmost care the sea creatures such as sea hare, sea urchin or starfish. We watched a gloomy octopus playing with a pencil and touched many sea anemones. On Thursday, year 4 students were welcomed by whales feeding off the coast. It was a treat to explore the animal kingdom on perfectly sunny and warm winters day.
I would like to thank parents who volunteered their time to help small groups explore the rock pools safely. This experience would not be possible without the parents’ involvement.
Special thanks to:
Tina Vala, Karen Murgatroyd, Kylie Taylor-Houston , Sean Granger, Ashley Jeffs, Lisa Lougher, Anita Yates, Brigitte Stoppel, Michelle Sherlock, Melissa Bradley, Nga Doung and Dan Goodsir.
I would also like to thank our stage 2 teachers who made this event smooth and enjoyable to all.
The Coastal Environment Centre, which assisted with our excursion, runs free community rock platform tours once a month. The next tour is due on Saturday 31 August. It could be a great opportunity to experience this unique environment with your family. Your child would be your perfect tour guide! Please follow the link and register your interest. The event is free of charge.

Below is a small sample of fantastic student reflections from the day:
Our Excursion to Long Reef Headland
On Tuesday and Thursday last week, Years 3 & 4 went on an exciting excursion to Fisherman's Beach where we learned about soil erosion and weathering. Once we got to Fisherman's Beach we got out of the bus and met three expert educators for our excursion to Long Reef Headland. Tim, Fran and Tristan led us into a room full of exotic seashells and a birds-eye-view of Fisherman's Beach.
Tristan got some volunteers to role play what life was like for the local indigenous peoples, to show us what a midden is and how it was used to live sustainably off the land. A midden is like a rubbish heap where local indigenous people put their food scraps, including yabbies, pipis and limpets, to show each other what they had already used from the land and sea.
We then split up into groups and learned about a massive storm that happened 3 years ago in 2016. Everything near and on the beach was destroyed. The tide was so high that you couldn't even see the sand. We got given 10 pictures of what had happened and put them in order of the events that had since happened.
Once recess was over we walked along the bush track to the top of the headland. We split up into three large groups with an educator in each. We used some weather measuring devices to measure the temperature and wind chill, and we used a kestrel and a hydrometer to measure the wind speed and humidity.
Afterwards, we walked down to the rock platform and had lunch by the rocks. When everyone finished lunch, we went to the rock pools nearby. When we got there we saw so many creatures, such as octopi, sea urchins, coral, sea stars and two camouflage sea slugs. There were two dangerous creatures that we thankfully didn't see. One was the highly dangerous blue-ringed octopus which flashes blue rings when scared and if it bites you, you only have around two hours before things get serious. The second one is a fire bristle worm that burns you at the slightest touch.
Then, as we headed back, we saw... WHALES! The whales popped out quite a few times near a whale watching boat.
We then went for a long walk on the beach back towards our bags, with our shoes and socks saturated but no one cared. On the walk we learnt about rock formations and the history of erosion at the headland.
Overall it was a really fun excursion and everyone loved it. Thank you to Mrs Banham and our teachers for taking us on the day!
