Athletics Carnival - Monday 12 August
Last Monday we had our wonderful school athletics carnival. The weather was a little windy but certainly didn’t deter the enthusiasm and competition on the day. Congratulations to all the students who ran in a race on the day. Field events will be run at lunchtimes during the next week with a new event the 1500m being run yesterday at David Thomas.
Thanks you to Mrs Birrell and Mr Dylan for all your organisation of the day and to our wonderful GA Barry who assisted with set up and clean up before and after the carnival.
Our K-2 carnival was also a fun day for all with our Kindergarten students running in their first race! Thank you to Mrs Lucey and the K-2 teachers for all their organisation of the day and to all the parents who came along to cheer on our students. It is always a fantastic community event.
Special thanks to our canteen staff Robyn and Kerry for running a pop up canteen on the day and to all the parents who baked cakes for the cake stall.
Stage 2 Excursion - Coastal Environment Centre
This week our Year 3 & 4 students have visited the Coastal Environment Centre as part of their environmental unit done in science. Mrs Banham organised the experience and the students and teachers have enjoyed being out in the great outdoors learning about the preservation of our coastline. These hands on experiences bring the curriculum to life for our students.
Stage 3 Excursion - Art Gallery and Botanic Gardens
Today our Stage 3 students travelled to the city to visit the art gallery and botanic gardens. They participated in tours and workshops at the art gallery and used their artistic skills to create artworks of their own at the botanic gardens. Thank you to the year 5 & 6 teachers on their commitment to engaging our students in real life experiences and learning.
Author Visit - Martin Chatterton
Yesterday our 3-6 students had a visit from Martin Chatterton who is an author illustrator of many books including the Bad Dog series, The Utterly Nutty World series and many other children and adult books. Martin characterised some of our own students with his clever illustrations and talk about his literary journey. His visit was a great warm up to our Book Week activities next week. Thank you Mrs O’Connor for organising this incursion for our students.

K-2 On Your Soap Box Finals - Friday 16 August 9.30am
Tomorrow we will have the Kindergarten, Years 1 & 2 “On your Soap Box” finals in our school hall. Congratulations to all students who were able to deliver a speech to their peers during class and to all the students who progressed to the finals competition. Thanks you to Mrs Robertson and Ms Pembroke for their organisation of the day and good luck to the entire group of finalists. Winners will be announced in next week’s newsletter.
Junior Band Information Evening - Thursday 15 August 7.00pm
Tonight there is an information evening regarding the junior band program. Parents and students from years 2, 3, 4 & 5 are able to attend this evening to find out about our band program. Carlos our new conductor, will conduct our current junior band and explain the process to join the band program. Any students wishing to learn an instrument can be a part of the junior band next year so please come along and find out about the process.
The junior band will also perform at the 3-6 assembly this Friday at 11.30am. Please see Hannah Taylor (KT) if you have any enquiries regarding the band.
Father’s Day Breakfast - Friday 30 August
On Friday 30 August from 7.00am to 9.00am we will host a Father’s Day breakfast outside our new school hall. A sausage sizzle breakfast will be available through Flexischools with the opportunity to visit classrooms and participate in school tours with Mrs Lee. Orders for students and parents will be available on Flexischools from Monday 19 August (next week).
Thank you to Lee Meredith and Kristen Welsh for their organisation and to all the parents who will volunteer to run the BBQ on the day. Information regarding volunteering will come out via the Class Coordinators next week.
Spell-A-Thon - Friday 30 August
All students should have received the sponsorship forms for the school’s Spell-A-Thon this year. This fundraiser is a Stage 3 parent fundraising activity. We will require volunteers on the day Friday 30 August, (after the Father’s Day breakfast) to count the money from the sponsorship and decide the stage winners.
Information will come out via the Class Coordinators next week. Please make sure that your child doesn’t seek sponsorship from people they do not know. Friends, family members and known neighbours can be asked to sponsor students. We do not encourage door-to-door knocking for sponsorship.
Money raised will go towards technology charging stations for our new laptops and iPads. The charging cabinets are dual locking, secured to the wall of each classroom and will house up to 32 laptops and iPads for classrooms use. The P & C have committed to purchasing these cabinets to secure the 300 school devices that have been supplied by the Department Of Education.
Please support this event as the cabinets will cost $63,000.
Volunteers Needed Urgently
There are many activities coming up that require volunteers. Please make contact with your Class Coordinator if you are able to volunteer any of your time for the Father’s Day breakfast, Spell-a-thon wrap up and Trivia Night (term 4). Fundraising is imperative as we now complete the final stages of construction and realise that we will require additional funds in some areas eg. landscaping and seating, iPad and laptop storage and covers, hall lighting and accessories etc.
The Uniform Shop and Canteen also require volunteers. Many shifts are not being filled, and to keep costs to a minimum volunteers are required to keep these P&C operations active.
Canteen Volunteer Coordinator Wanted
The canteen needs a person who is willing to coordinate volunteers and the “Sign Up Genius”app. It is a role you can do from home and just requires managing a database of volunteers so that all shifts are covered. If you would like to enquire more about the role please make contact with Kerry or Robyn at manlyvalepscanteen@gmail.com or by dropping into the canteen. If you can spare some time at home this would be greatly appreciated.
Uniform shop Volunteers required for Kindergarten Orientation
Wendie requires additional volunteers to cover the extra openings of our uniform shop. Please make contact with Wendie (wendie@mac.com) if you are able to assist on the days below or on a Friday morning for regular opening sessions.

Stage 2 Virtual Excursion
Last week, year 3 & 4 students participated in a virtual excursion to the Museum of Sydney, the site of the first Government House.
Classes tuned in via live stream and participated in an interview with Shannon Foster, a Sydney D’harawal Saltwater Knowledge Keeper. Students learned about indigenous objects and the Gadigal women who used these objects in daily life. With raffia in hand in our classrooms, Shannon then taught us the traditional Aboriginal stringing technique used to make fishing line by the Gadigal women.
It was wonderful to learn from our community members in such an engaging and hands-on activity, all from our very own classrooms!

Two stickers will earn them a small prize plus an entry into the draw for some great prizes including some books and a Nintendo Switch. All entry forms need to be returned to the canteen once completed. Please contact us on manlyvalepscanteen@gmail.com with any queries.
