Principal’s Report
The theme for Education Week this year is “Every Student, Every Voice.” Our school choir certainly demonstrated their beautiful voices at the Town Hall last Monday night for the Arts Alive Combined Choral Festival. Mrs Lucey and Mrs Mason were extremely proud of the behaviour of the Manly Vale Public School choir at this festival as they participated in a memorable performance joining with other choirs from public schools from around the state. Thank you to all the parents who attended the evening and to Mrs Lucey and Ms Mason for their passion and dedication in leading the school choirs.

Education Week - Open Day
Last Tuesday we had a great turn out for the open classroom demonstrations. Parents were able to see the collaborative teaching environments in action. This was followed by a concert in the hall with performances from the choir, dance and drama groups and our school bands. Thank you to all the parents who attended the day and thank you to Ann in the office for organising a lovely morning tea to conclude the events.
Kindergarten Orientation and Enrolments
Our Kindergarten Orientation program begins on Tuesday 20 August at 9.30am. All our sessions will have the children going to the Kindergarten classrooms to complete some activities with a Kindergarten teacher whilst the parents attend information sessions in the hall. Enrolment forms need to be completed and dropped into the office. Only families who live in the catchment are able to enrol in the school.
Athletics Carnival - Monday 12 August
Next Monday we have our annual school athletics carnival. All students attend the carnival down at David Thomas (K-2 students head down after recess and stay until lunch). Parents are invited to attend and watch.
A cake stall for the students to purchase treats has been organised by some parents. If you are able to bake some cupcakes or slices and drop them down to David Thomas by 10.30am, or at school at drop off time, it would be much appreciated. The cake stall and a temporary canteen will be available for students to purchase drinks, ice blocks and cakes on the day. Please pack lunches, as lunch orders will not be available at the carnival. (Reminder CANTEEN CLOSED TODAY, no Flexischool’s orders filled).
Life Education Parent Session Monday 12 August 2.00pm
Next Monday at the completion of the Athletics Carnival all parents and visitors are invited to attend a parent information session in the Life Education Van located on the school’s basketball court. All students will have visited the van by that stage and have completed a variety of lessons on healthy eating and lifestyles, anti-bullying and cyber safety activities.
Stage 2 Coastal Environment excursions
Next week our stage 2 students will attend the Coastal Environment Centre at Narrabeen. Year 3 will attend Tuesday and Year 4 Thursday. These excursions have been organised by Mrs Banham as part of the science program. Please ensure that all permission notes have been returned and that you cancel lunch orders on Flexischools for those days if your child is attending.
This term we are also welcoming back Mr Peter Macinnis our resident scientist and botanist to work with our students in our local area.
P & C Meeting - Tuesday 13 August – 7.00pm
All welcome to attend the next P & C meeting on Tuesday 13 August. All meetings are held in the staff room. At the next meeting I will be addressing:
- Spending priorities for 2019
- Future focused directions and professional learning for the staff and students
- The implementation of the 1: 1 Device initiative
- Kindergarten Orientation and the new enrolment process
If you wish to learn about or have input into the school and its directions you should attend these meetings.
On Your Soap Box Finals
Congratulations to all students who have delivered a speech to their peers as part of the “On Your Soap Box” public speaking competition. The finals for these competitions will be:
K-2- Friday 23 August at 9.30am
3-6 Friday 16 August 9.30am
Canteen Volunteers
We are desperately needing canteen volunteers this term. We have spaces in the roster (see later in this newsletter) that we have been unable to get volunteers to fill. Please contact Kerry or Robyn in the canteen if you are able to help out any day but especially the days where we have no helpers.
Parking
Please do not use the car park during peak times to drop off or pick up students. We are experiencing a lot of traffic at the moment and are continually having to ask cars to move so trucks and deliveries are able to access the site.

Drama Group Performance at the Arts Alive Drama Festival 2019
Last week the drama group led by Miss Kemp performed at the Concourse Theatre as part of the Art Alive Drama Festival 2019. The actors: Phoebe Crowe, Morgan Andrews, Grace Green, Isaac Sherlock, Macy Sherlock, Kate Fewtrell and Nidhi Malhotra, delivered an unforgettable performance. Miss Kemp’s creative writing skills and expertise in preparing her group was outstanding.
It was my privilege to help on the day and be part of this troupe. I would like to thank our volunteers Mrs Te Pania and Mrs Fewtrell for transporting students to and from the venue for their rehearsal.

On Your Soapbox
This Friday 9 August and the following Friday 16 August, Manly Vale Public School is holding the annual ‘On Your Soapbox’ public speaking Class Finals competition. Every single student in the school has worked hard to prepare and present a speech on a chosen topic to his or her classmates and teacher. Every teacher has then chosen one student from their class who they think displayed superb public speaking skills and who deserves to share their speech with the rest of the school. Students in grades 3-6 have been notified and sent home with a letter informing parents of the upcoming assemblies and an invitation to parents to come and watch them present their speeches to a huge audience. A letter will be going home to class finalists from Kindergarten to Year 2 shortly.
This is an amazing opportunity for our best speakers to showcase their talents in front of their families and friends.
Students in Stage 2 & Stage 3 will also be competing against each other to win a spot in the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition held by our NSW Premier at Parliament House in Sydney on Monday 2 September 2019.
Congratulations to all students for putting in a huge amount of effort (and for some students overcoming their fears of public speaking) in delivering a speech, and an extra congratulations to those selected to compete at the next level.
We wish all of our class finalists good luck and hope that they can enjoy their time on their soapbox.
- Friday 9 August - 3-6 ‘On Your Soapbox’ Assembly 9:30am – 11:00am
- Friday 16 August - K-2 ‘On Your Soapbox’ Assembly 9:30am – 10:15am
