Principal’s Report
It was wonderful to show our new Kindergarten parents for 2020 around during our Open Day last Monday. Thank you to our school band, dance groups and choir who provided an entertaining concert for the new parents, which was followed by school tours led by our year 6 leaders. Thanks to all the students who were involved in the day.
We now have 85 students enrolled for next year and encourage new and interested parents to enrol as soon as possible and prepare for the Kindergarten Orientation program.

Education Week - “Every Student, Every Voice” – Open Day 6 August
Next week is Education Week and our Open Day will be on Tuesday 6 August. We will be opening classrooms from 9.20am – 10.00am followed by performances from our school bands, drama and dance groups and junior & senior choirs. A program of events for the day can be found by following the link below. All parents and grandparents are welcome to attend the day and share morning tea in our new school hall at 11.00am.
Life Education Van - Thursday 1 August - Monday 12 August
Once again the Healthy Harold Life Education van is visiting our school. It will be located next to the old canteen and every class will visit the van and learn about healthy eating and lifestyle. A parent session has been organised for the afternoon of the Athletics Carnival Monday 12 August 1.55pm-2.55pm. All parents are welcome to visit the van to see how the lessons are presented and experience the interactive activities.
Payment for this excursion should be paid before this Thursday. There is opportunity for your child to purchase some memorabilia from the van during their visit.
Arts Alive Drama Festival
Good luck to our school drama group Phoebe Crowe, Grace Green, Morgan Andrews, Pipi Te Pania, Kate Fewtrell, Macy Sherlock, Isaac Sherlock and Nidhi Malhotra in their performance tonight at the Arts North Drama Festival. The drama group will perform “The day the teachers quit” written and directed by Ms Jaala Kemp. Unfortunately Ms Kemp is away on leave at the moment but Mrs Banham has kindly stepped in to look after the group during their performance tonight. Thank you to Kristen Te Pania and Sharon Fewtrell who drove the students to their technical performance yesterday.
Congratulations Kirsten Evans
Kirsten Evans in 5R has received a Gold Award in the 2019 Writeon competition. Kirsten will be presented her award at the State Library on Friday 23 August. We are very proud of Kirsten and her outstanding achievement in this state-wide competition. She is a very talented writer and should be extremely proud of her work and award, as we all are at Manly Vale Public School. Well done Kirsten!
Athletics Carnival – Monday 12 August
We will be having our whole school annual Athletics Carnival on Monday 12 August. A program for the day will be sent home next week. All track events will be run on the day down at David Thomas Reserve with the field events taking place over lunchtimes and sport sessions over the next few weeks. Students will be notified as to when these events take place and sports uniform and shoes is able to be worn on these days.
School Fees
School fee reminders will come out next week. All semester 1 excursions and resources including textbooks, K-2 dance programs and gym should have been paid for. Please make sure that you make regular payments of fees throughout the year to avoid your child missing out on excursions and events.
Students will not be able to participate in extension and extra–curricular programs including PSSA, Dancesport gala day (yr 5), art shack and gifted & talented extension activities if fee payments are not up to date.
Parking
Please do not park across the neighbour’s driveways surrounding the school. Our neighbours are very supportive of our school and it is disappointing to hear that some parents are deliberately parking them in at drop off and pick up times. Please do not park across driveways.
NAIDOC Week Artwork “Voice, Treaty, Truth”
Last Friday the Year 6 students presented the school with art works made by every class in the school. Every student designed and decorated a leaf, which was displayed in the shape of flowers in frames (see picture below). Congratulations to every student for their contributions to this whole school artwork and to Mrs Blackband who coordinated the project and assembled the final products into frames. A great school effort and acknowledgement of NAIDOC week theme of “working together for a shared future”. Stage 3 have also displayed some completed biographies of aboriginal leaders around the school, which can be viewed during Education Week next week.
Thank you Northern Beaches Council Community Garden Volunteers – Landscaping update
The hundreds of plants that were rescued by Katrina Wagg, Tom Hazell (grandpa of Benji & Alana) and the Northern Beaches Community Garden volunteers have now been planted into the nature area and around the school. Special thanks and acknowledgment to this group of volunteers who came and collected the plants, propagated seeds and cuttings and carefully looked after them in preparation to be planted back into our school.
Some of the plant life around the school was chosen in consultation with our local environmental groups and we thank our local community volunteers for all their time and effort in preserving the local fauna to be replanted into the school. Tom Hazell will now be seeking support from the P & C so that ongoing bush care within our school can be maintained. Thank you Katrina, Tom and your team for all the work you have done to contribute to restoration of the school grounds.
Construction Update
We will begin to have the use of the oval next week for our athletics trials and both the students and staff are excited at the thought of playing on our green grass again. The overall completion of the project will be by the end of October this year. A project update can be seen if you follow the link below and an estimated timeline for handover follows:
- AREA 1 - In front of hall – open to students as of 22 July
