Principal’s Report
NAIDOC Week- “Voice, Treaty, Truth”
I would like to acknowledge the Gai-marigal people who are the original custodians of the land from which Manly Vale Public School now stands. They were one of the first nations to be impacted due to European expansion with the search for land, prisons for convicts and grazing pastures for sheep and cattle.
The language of this Gai-marigal nation was all but lost due to the policy of previous governments.
I pay tribute to these people who have had to survive in adverse conditions, lost their language, homes, livelihood and children.
This NAIDOC week is a chance to remember the voice of the Gai-marigal people, learn from our previous mistakes, and make Treaty with our aboriginal elders and people, past and present by telling the Truth. The Truth always has 2 sides and to date there has only been one side told. It is time to hear the Truth of the original custodians.
Manly Vale Public School students have been remembering and acknowledging aboriginal culture this week by creating artworks to be displayed around the school. Classes have been learning about the impact of European settlement and the importance of learning the history of aboriginal existence prior to settlement in 1788.

K-2 Dance Concert
Yesterday’s dance concert is probably our biggest event of the year (certainly for the K-2 students and teachers). The choreography from Miss Vanessa allowed every student to shine and enjoy displaying their dance moves and talents developed over the past two terms of our school’s dance program. Miss Vanessa is new to Manly Vale Public School this year, and every student has enjoyed attending dance classes once a week. The concert was magnificent and every parent, teacher and student enjoyed the experience.
Thank you to Miss Panetta for assisting with the organisation of the concert and for allowing us all the opportunity to see her boys’ and girls’ dance ensembles perform before they go off to the Northern Sydney Dance Festival at Glen Street this week. Thank you also to Mrs Speight for her organisation of the rehearsal and concert and to all the teachers and parents who prepared costumes, make-up and music for the day. It was a lovely way to conclude the term and celebrate all the achievements of our K-2 children.
Northern Beaches Dance Festival- Glen Street
Last night our two school dance groups – Boys Hip Hop and Girls Dance ensemble performed at the Glen Street theatre as part of the Northern Beaches Dance Festival. Miss Panetta our talented dance teacher choreographed both performances the girls performing “Two Worlds” and the boys performing “Dance on my Mind.”
I’d like to acknowledge the work of Miss Panetta who has worked tirelessly through lunchtimes to get our dance groups performance fit and to Miss Bianca Murray for her work in supporting Miss Panetta with organisation and assistance. Many extra hours are put in to bring a performance like this together. We are so lucky to have dedicated teachers who give so much of their time to enable these extra curricular activities and experiences to happen. Thank you to our parents who have supported our talented dance program with costuming and driving students to this event.
Staff Development Day- Monday 22 July
Please make arrangements for your child to be supervised on Monday 22 July. All the teachers and School Learning and Support Officers (SLSOs) will be at another site engaging in professional learning. No supervision will be available on this day. Our first official day of school will be Tuesday 23 July and we look forward to seeing you all then.
“Snake Tails” Performance- 24 July (week 1)
In the first week back next term all students will attend “Snake Tails” an incursion in our school hall. Most students have paid for this incursion in their school fees however some students may need to pay for this incursion next term before attending. The incursion will be a follow up to our NAIDOC week celebrations.
Kindergarten 2020 Open day
Monday 29 July (Week 2) we will have our Kindergarten Open day. Our school bands, choir, dance and drama groups will be performing and our school leaders will be conducting school tours for all new and interested parents. The day will begin at 9.30am and conclude by 11.00am followed by a morning tea in the hall. All new and interested parents for 2020 are invited to attend and view our new school. A Kindergarten Transition program beginning on Tuesday 20 August 2019 will follow this Open day.
Education Week- Monday 5 August- Friday 9 August
The theme for this year’s education Week is “Every Student, Every Voice”. During our Education Week celebrations there will be a Book Fair in the library for purchasing of books for classrooms and an Open Day to display our bands, drama and dance groups and our school choir. We hope that all parents are able to attend the Open Day on Tuesday 6 August from 9.20am- 11.20am. Please keep this day free in your diaries.
Life Education Van- Friday 2 August (week 2) – Monday 12 August (week 4)
Every second year we have a visit from The Life Education Van. Healthy Harold takes all students through positive and healthy behaviours, good eating habits, preventive drug and alcohol programs and the make up of the human body. All students from K-6 will visit the van. This interactive resource is a fantastic way to teach important life skills for all students. There will be a parent information session for those parents who wish to visit the van on Monday 12 August after the Athletics Carnival. This incursion is part of the whole school incursion program.
Happy Holidays
Thank you for all your support in Term 2. Have a wonderful family holiday time together. Forget about packing lunches, doing homework and returning notes. Enjoy some “down time” with your children. We look forward to all the students and staff returning on Tuesday 23 July. Miss Kemp (4K) and Miss Sussanna (1/2S) will be away the first couple of weeks of school on family overseas trips. A separate not was sent home to their classes this week.
Please note that the school is out of bounds for all students during this break as there will be a lot of works taking place over the holidays.
The Before and After School Care program will be operational during the holidays. For bookings please call 0430 369 288. Additional care is available at our OOSH care on Monday 22 July if required.
Banner assembly – Friday 26 July
Congratulations to Phoebe Crowe and Kate Scholtens who will receive a School Banner on the first week back at school, Friday 26 July at 9.00am assembly.

K-2 Dance Concert
We would like to sincerely thank all parents and carers who were able to attend the K-2 dance concert on Wednesday 3 July. It was wonderful to have your support and to put our new school hall to use. Our students were super excited to present their dance performances to their families. We are certain you thoroughly enjoyed each performance and appreciate the effort our students applied to learn their choreography.
A special thank you to Miss Vanessa who has made dance a fun and enjoyable experience for all students. Her energy, drive and ability to engage every child is a testament to her natural ability as a dance teacher. Thank you to Miss Panetta for developing the timetable and program for the rehearsal and performance and to all our outstanding K-2 teachers who give their heart and soul to their classes, we sincerely thank you!
A special thank you to all the parents and carers who gave up their time to help support their child’s class teacher with costuming, hair and make-up on the day. Your time and support is always greatly appreciated.
The entire K-2 team would like to wish all our Manly Vale students and their families a fabulous, well deserved holiday. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again in term 3.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Carol Speight and the K-2 Team
Debating
Our Premier’s Debating teams have been working very hard this week and completed the final rounds assigned in zone 4.
Team Foxes argued against the proposition that year 6 students should babysit their siblings and won their debate against Allambie Heights Public School. Unfortunately, team Owls lost their debate against Curl Curl North Public School. They, as the negative team, argued that parents should pay their kids whenever they help around the house.
On Friday, our teams went head to head in the last round of the debates. Their topic was that teachers should have to participate in all school sport and exercise classes just like students. It was an extremely close debate, however, team Owls were successful in winning their debate as the negative team.
We would also like to congratulate our year 4 and year 5 students who participated in the friendly debate on Monday 1 July. All students presented clear and persuasive arguments with confidence. The topic for the debate was that all students should play a musical instrument. This was another very close debate, which the affirmative team won with some convincing rebuttals.
Congratulations to all our students who have committed to debating this year and demonstrated significant gains in their critical thinking, creativity and public speaking abilities.

ATSI Education News
All students have been busy this week with different activities in recognition of NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We look forward to sharing some of the student’s work in the next Bush Telegraph.
The staff of Manly Vale Public School are attending a Professional Development Day next term with a focus on Aboriginal Education. Learning Support News
This term the NCCD (Nationally Consistent Collection of Data) has been collected and submitted. Please read below and see the attached documents to find out more.
What is the NCCD?
Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, Australian students with a disability must be able to access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. To ensure this, students with disability may receive adjustments to access education, based on the professional judgement of teachers, in consultation with the student and/or their parents, guardians or carers.
What is the purpose of the NCCD?
The NCCD collects data about school students with disability who are receiving adjustments across Australia in a consistent, reliable and systematic way. It enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can be best supported at school.
Please see the attached Facts Sheet for further information.

Canteen News
Thank you to all who helped in the Canteen this term. Your help was really appreciated. Kerry and I would not have been able to produce the volume of fresh, nutritious and yummy food that is required by the school community every day without your support.
Please find below Term 3 canteen roster. If the day time etc that I have put you down for doesn't suit you it would be really helpful if you could organise a swap with another person and let me know or look for the ? (which indicates we still need help with this shift) in the roster on a day that does suit and I'll swap you around .
Have a great holiday break and see you next term.
