Principal’s Report
Congratulations to our Zone Cross Country team (Pipi Te Pania, Mackenzie Jeffs and Eve Goldsworthy), who went to Gosford to compete in the Regional Cross Country Carnival last Friday. It is always a much harder course with very high performing athletes competing against each other. Pipi came 7th in the U11 and is first reserve for the State Carnival, Mackenzie was in the middle of the group in the same race. Eve came 14th in the U10 girls’ event. Tremendous effort from all three girls. Congratulations! Thanks to the parents who drove them to Gosford and supported them on the day.

Year 2 excursion to Susannah Place
Last Tuesday Year 2 attended an excursion to the Susannah Place Museum as part of their “Past and Present” HSIE unit of work. Rain didn’t dampen the experience for the children and a big thank you to the teachers and parents who supervised the students during this excursion.
Debating Teams
Today was the last of our “friendly” debates for the year. Our debating teams have had a lot of success and enjoyed competing against Allambie Heights and Curl Curl North Public Schools for their final debates. Thank you to Mrs Banham and Mrs Radan who have coached and organised the debates this year and congratulations to our school debating teams on their commitment to the program.
Disco
Last Thursday Mr Dylan, Mrs Blackband and our Year 6 leaders organised a wonderful disco for all the Manly Vale Public School students. DJ Andy loved performing in our new school hall and it was great to have the additional space for the dancing and games. The Year 6 students have donated half the money $576 to our sponsorship child Sathi, and will use the remainder to buy a gift to the school at the end of the year. Thank you to all the students who attended and special thanks to all the teachers who stayed back to supervise the night. It is always a fun event for all.
Banner Assembly - Friday
Congratulations to Toby Kells, Madeleine Toole and Talia Stedman who will be receiving School Banners at this Friday’s morning assembly. Talia will be receiving her second banner, which is a tremendous achievement.
NAIDOC Week - “Voice, Treaty, Truth”
Next week is NAIDOC week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s, which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. At Manly Vale Public School we will be acknowledging the Gaimaragal clan in our celebrations next week and making a whole school art display to represent our commitment to the local indigenous people of our area.
K-2 Dance Concert – Wednesday 3 July - 11.30am - School Hall
Next week we will finalise our K-2 Dance program with a dance concert showcasing the dances our students have learnt with Ms Vanessa. The concert will be in our new school hall. Our boys’ hip hop and girls’ dance ensemble will open and close the concert.
It has been a very exciting time for all our K-2 students and they look forward to performing for their parents and family next week. A gold coin donation is appreciated at the door, which will go towards our creative arts and dance programs for the year. Please make sure you are seated by 11.30am on the day.
Reports
Our end of semester one reports will go home on Wednesday 3 July. The reports are a summary of your child’s performance in the Key Learning Areas. Interviews can be arranged next term with your child’s class teacher if you wish to follow up anything in the report.
Manly Vale Public School Dance Ensembles - Glen Street
Good luck to our two school dance groups next week at their performances in the Northern Beaches Dance Festival at Glen Street. Ms Panetta and Ms Murray will accompany the dance groups to Glen Street on Tuesday for a dress rehearsal and then for their performances on the Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
Both groups have worked hard on their routines and their costumes look amazing. It is always an exciting time for our dancers. Thank you to Ms Panetta for her commitment to dance within the school and for her choreography of the routines.
Certificates of Leave
If you are travelling overseas and missing school, or are traveling domestically for more than 10 school days please make sure you complete an application form for a “Certificate of Leave” available from the newsletter or the front office. Certificate of leave applications should be accompanied by travel itineraries and documentation.
A Certificate of Leave will be issued after receipt of your application and you are expected to carry this certificate with you when you travel.
Staff Development Day – Monday 22 July
Just a reminder that we have a staff development day on the first day back of next term (Monday 22 July). No teachers will be at school that day as we are all expected to attend a conference at Dee Why. Please make alternative arrangements for your child for that day or phone the Manly Vale OSHC Centre 0430 369 288 to book in for care on site that day.

Stage 1 Excursion to Susannah Place
Year 1 and 2 had a fascinating excursion to Susannah Place to discover what life was like in the past. They visited 19th century terrace houses, a small corner shop and were able to explore the streets around the Rocks area. Students were amazed at how small the living spaces were in the homes they visited and couldn’t believe that people actually needed to go outside to use the toilet or use a ‘chamber pot’ for emergencies during the night! They discovered that families in the past were much larger than today and that doing the washing took all day because a fire had to be lit to boil water in a copper pot before the clothes could be scrubbed by hand. Students all had a turn at playing quoits in the tiny backyard and role-played shopping for groceries in the corner store. Items had to be weighed individually, placed in reusable brown paper bags, and were bought using pounds and shillings. Students also learnt what ‘half a dozen’ means when they had to purchase ‘dolly pegs’.
We were grateful for experiencing fine weather for most of the excursion which allowed us to have lunch at Circular Quay, enjoying the best view in town. Our willing artists drew detailed sketches of a bustling city that has changed so much over time.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH.
This is the theme for NAIDOC Week 2019. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. NAIDOC originally stood for the ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’.
Manly Vale Public School is recognising NAIDOC Week in a variety of ways. Over the next few weeks classes will be completing lessons from the SBS Learn NAIDOC Week program. Students will also be completing a combined artwork which will be presented to Mrs Lee next term. Stage 3 are completing a personal interest project about an important Indigenous Australian of their choice. Their projects will be displayed around the school in the first week back of Term 3, so keep an eye out!
The Manly Vale Public School staff are attending a Staff Development Day next term with a focus on Aboriginal Education. Susan Moylan-Coombs, director of the Gaimaragal Group, will be speaking, as will Dr Christine Evans, President of the Metropolitan North Regional AECG. All staff are looking forward to this event.
You can find more information here about NAIDOC Week here at the link below.

Art Shack
Art Shack students in years 3 & 4 have been working hard all term with Miss Stacey to create a mask. The students researched and sketched different types of masks and have created their own mask using this inspiration and their own creativity. These masks will be displayed in the new library next term. Well done Stage 2 Art Shack. They look fantastic.

Marble Runs
Kindergarten have been learning about push and pull forces in conjunction with how shape influences the way things move. To summarise with what they have learnt this term Kindergarten spent 2 weeks designing and building their own marble runs. Congratulations on your successful experiment!

GATS Committee update
Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Local finals
We are pleased to inform our school community that Talia Stedman who took part in MPPS Local Final at Brookvale Public School was awarded a Highly Commended mention. This is a great achievement.
Debating
Last week our two Premiers’ Debating Challenge teams, the Owls & Foxes competed against Manly West Public School teams. The Owls debated that ‘we should ban people under 18 from playing online games like Fortnite’ and taking on affirmative position unfortunately lost the case.
The Foxes debated that ‘all school work should be done on computers’ also took an affirmative position and won the case.
Both debates were very well structured and we were pleased to hear coherent rebuttals.
During week 9 both teams will complete their Zone 4 debates. On Thursday, the Foxes will debate against Allambie Heights Public School and the Owls will debate against Curl Curl North Public School. On Friday morning our last debate will be held at school and both our teams will debate against each other.
Mrs Radan has organised a friendly debate amongst our year 4 debating trainees and it will be held on Friday 5 July.
Mrs Radan and I wish our debaters success in the final rounds.
