Principal’s Report
With the rain this week it was truly apparent how many students do not have raincoats. Please ensure your child has a raincoat/jacket in their school bag at all times. Our school hall and canteen are not accessible under cover and students need some form of protection at school at all times. Please do not send umbrellas, as they are dangerous when there are so many students trying to move around the school.
Bunnings Donation
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Balgowlah Bunnings Easter family evening. As a result of the support of our community for the Balgowlah Bunnings store, Theo from Bunnings organised a donation of some gardening essentials and a new gerni for our school. They have also offered to donate some gardening equipment later in the year when our oval is complete. Thank you to Ammata Tiscareno (Mackenzie’s mum 2D) for liaising with Bunnings after the event.
Premier’s Sporting Challenge - Welcome Paige Hadley
In recognition of Manly Vale Public School’s participation in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge, Paige Hadley, an Australian Netballer came to our 3-6 assembly. She presented certificates to our sporting leaders in the Challenge and special participation awards (Fit Bits), one per grade to those students who had showed a general improvement in their ability to eat healthily and increase their exercise over the program. It was a truly motivating assembly and all students enjoyed hearing Paige’s journey to become an Australian netballer. Thank you to Ms Fisk who has organised the challenge and this wonderful finish to the program.
Pittwater Instrumental Festival
Last Wednesday night our junior and senior bands performed as part of the Pittwater Instrumental Festival. Both bands looked tremendous in their new band uniform and gave first class performances on the night. Congratulations to Ben and Carlos our conductors on their preparation for this event. Later this year we hope to put on a band performance in our school hall for our local community. Our next band meeting will be on Tuesday 23 July at 6.45pm. All welcome.
Zone Cross Country - Thursday 13 June
Last Thursday a team of 48 competitors went to North Curl Curl to compete in the Zone Cross Country. Our students were very competitive on the day with outstanding performances from Pipi Te Pania, Belinda Matthews, Mackenzie Jeffs, Eve Goldsworthy, Oliver Solberger and Ireland Kennedy, who all came in the top 10 for their age group on the day. The regional carnival is tomorrow Friday 21 June and we wish the competitors all the best for their race. Thank you Mr Dylan & Mrs Ward for accompanying our competitors on the day and all the parents who came to watch and support our team.
School Disco - Rainbow Theme
Tonight is our school disco in our new school hall. The session times are:
K-2 (5.30pm-7.00pm) and 3-6 (7.10pm – 8.40pm). Please make sure you pick your child up from the school hall at the end of their session. No child is permitted to leave the hall without an adult. Children who are going home with other parents should bring a note explaining this arrangement. Thank you to Mr Dylan and year 6 for your organisation of this event. All proceeds go towards the Year 6 gift at the end of the year and their farewell function.
Year 1 Susanna Place Museum
Last Tuesday our year 1 students went into The Rocks to take a “walk back in time.” The museum is a series of 4 shops including a corner store built in 1844. The museum allows students to see what life was like for the domestic working class between 1844 and 1990. This real life experience was enhance the learning experience for all students as part of the “Past and Present” unit of work. Thank you to Ms Pembroke and Ms Scobie who have organised these excursions and to the year 1 teachers and parents who accompanied the students. Year 2 will attend the same excursion next Tuesday 25 June.
Parking Concerns
Please do not park across driveways of our neighbours. Our neighbours in the surrounding streets are unable to get access in and out of their houses during pick up and drop of times. This is causing them a great deal of distress especially when they are becoming late for appointments and work due to parents blocking them in. Please be considerate of our neighbours when parking.
ICAS Competitions
Please look out for the ICAS note today in student’s school bags. If you are wanting your child to sit the ICAS tests you need to complete the process online. A separate note is being sent home today regarding the process. Visit the new online Parent Payment System to make a direct payment to UNSW Global. Online payment will close on 31 July 2019. To make a payment visit the link below and enter the school code: 4c9bbc184a (please note, you are not required to fill in a ‘student ID’ on the site).

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking
Competition – Local Finals
For the first time, Manly Vale Public School hosted the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition. Students from 8 schools came to share their prepared and impromptu speeches. The adjudicator was very impressed with the sophistication, excellent preparation and the delivery of the prepared speeches clearly demonstrating a good understanding of multicultural issues in Australia. We would like to congratulate all of our speakers for taking part in this competition and share the results with our school community.
Year 3&4 category - Highly
Commended - Isaac Sherlock
Year 5&6 category - Highly Commended - Phoebe
Crowe
A huge ‘thankyou’ goes to our prefects Matilda Graham, Toby Marsters and Trisha Khapung for helping with running the competition day so smoothly.
Congratulations to our winners.

Zone Cross Country
Last Thursday the Manly Vale Cross Country team competed at the Manly PSSA Zone Cross Country at Curl Curl. It was a beautiful winter’s day presenting perfect running conditions. The children all competed admirably with everyone trying their hardest during their race. Our team had an excellent spot right on the home straight so we were able to cheer all our runners home enthusiastically. Some of the outstanding individual results of the day include:
Belinda Matthew 8th in the 8/9 girls
Eve Goldsworthy 3rd in the 10 girls
Pipi Te Pania 2nd and Mackenzie Jeffs 5th in the 11 girls
Ireland Kennedy 10th in the 12 girls
Oliver Solberger 5th in the 11 boys
Anyone who placed 6th or better will be representing our school and zone at the Regional Cross Country this Friday. We would like to wish them the best and all our support is behind them.
Thank you to the parents who came down and supported on the day and joined in the cheering. Your support is always appreciated. Last but not least a huge thank you to the whole team from Mrs Ward and myself for being so well behaved and demonstrating such wonderful sportsmanship on the day. As always Manly Vale students were a pleasure to take as a team.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge
At the 3-6 assembly last Friday students were treated to a guest speaker as part of the Premier's Sporting Challenge (PSC). Paige Hadley from the Sydney Swifts is an ambassador for the PSC and spoke to the students about her journey in becoming a professional netball player. From the age of 7, Paige said she started to play netball because her best friend at school was. Over the following 20 years Paige's determination and skill has seen her secure a contract with the Sydney Swifts in the National Netball League as well as represent her country playing for the Diamonds at an international level. She has been named in the Australian team who will be competing at the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool, England during July.
Paige spoke about the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and nutritious diet. She also said learning to be resilient during times of injury or when you don't get selected to play in a particular team or game, both of which she has experienced during her playing career, is very important too.
The 8 sports captains who have been working hard at logging the weekly activity medals for every student in 3-6 were presented with their PSC Leader badges. We are very grateful for the time they have given throughout the term. The assembly was also an opportunity to recognise a student from each class who has shown particular enthusiasm and dedication to improve their own physical activity during the 10 week challenge.
With only 3 weeks to go all staff and students remain focussed on achieving an average of 60 minutes physical activity a day or 10,000 steps for those who are counting. We look forward to seeing which classes achieve bronze, silver, gold or diamond medals at the conclusion of the challenge.
