Principal’s Report

It is hard to believe that we are half way through 2nd term. Teachers are busy assessing students for the half-yearly reports. Miss Vanessa our new dance teacher is rehearsing for our annual K-2 Dance Concert on Wednesday 3 July and our cross country champions are training for the Zone Cross Country Carnival on 5 June.

National Reconciliation Week - Grounded in Truth: Walk Together in Courage

This week in my role as Primary Principal’s Association Aboriginal Reference Group Representative, I was fortunate to travel to Moree, Lightning Ridge and Goodooga to visit schools and talk to other principals about the best ways toembed Aboriginal perspectives into our current syllabus and improve literacy and numeracy skills for our aboriginal students. It was clearly apparent that there is still a lot of work to be done to support aboriginal students within our schools and it is important that we do need to acknowledge the past and take ownership of mistakes made by previous government policy.

I was so impressed with the dedication of the teachers in these rural and remote areas, and the great way they are working to ensure all students have equal access to the curriculum. The group of principals were also treated to a “welcome to country” smoking ceremony and the boys dance group at Goodooga Central opened a very important assembly to commemorate National Sorry Day. It was great to be entertained by the students and to enjoy a day out on country with them learning about bush tucker. Knowledge of my trip will be shared amongst our students during the next few weeks.

Multicultural Public Speaking finals - Friday 31 May

Tomorrow we will host the finals of the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition. Good luck to our finalists (see later in this newsletter) who will be delivering their speeches in the school hall. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this competition as the standard was very high this year. Last week we heard from Oliver Sollberger and Pipi Te Pania at our school’s weekly assembly and everyone agreed that their speeches were outstanding. We are all excited to hear the quality of speeches of the finalists tomorrow. Thank you Mrs Banham for all your organisation of this event.

Rugby Gala Day

Congratulations to our junior and senior rugby teams who competed in last Tuesday’s Gala Day. Mrs Ward commented on the excellent behaviour and sportsmanship of both teams. The senior team won 2 games and came 32nd overall, with the junior team making the semi-final. Thank you to all the parents who came to support the teams and to Kris Bromiley for cooking sausages for both teams. It was a great day for all who participated. A match report will appear later in this newsletter.

Digi Education & Q Station

Next Tuesday, stage 3 will take part in an incursion called Digi-Ed. All students will create short clips and Claymation videos. This is always a popular day for our senior students who learn film making techniques to make short movies. We look forward to the film festival at the conclusion of the day.

Stage 3 are also attending an excursion to the Q Station in Manly on Thursday 6 June. They will learn about the impact of smallpox and the Spanish flu on our first settlers to Manly. It is an historic excursion and will support the work all students are currently undertaking in history and geography lessons.

Zone Cross Country - Wednesday 5 June

Good luck to the 48 competitors attending the Zone Cross Country at Curl Curl next week. It is always a difficult course and will test your endurance and flexibility. Thank you for representing our school at this event. Please ensure all notes are returned and that your get an early night on the Tuesday as it is such a big day. Thank you Mr Dylan for your organisation of our cross country carnivals and events.

Lost Property

Please make sure that you check all items of uniform as many children are taking home the wrong jackets and hats. Please return items to school immediately if they are not yours.

No Nuts

Please do not send nuts to school for lunch. This includes satay dishes, nutella and peanut butter on sandwiches and many muesli bars. We currently have many children who have a nut allergy and need to have a nut-free environment.

Parking

The traffic officer has put up many signs around the carpark and school asking for all of our community to park legally. Please refrain from using the staff car park for drop offs and pick-ups and park further down the street allowing children to walk up to school. Random council rangers will be visiting the school over the next few weeks.

Principal’s Award Banner Recipients

Awards will be presented at this Friday morning’s assembly in the K-2 COLA area. Parents of recipients are welcome to attend.

Allergy Alert

We would like to remind all families that we endeavour to be a nut free school due to the number of students in our care with nut and other allergies. Lately we have had a number of students in K-2 coming to school with recess and lunch items containing nuts. Items such as nut bars, chicken satay sticks and peanut butter sandwiches should be avoided. We ask that you please support us in ensuring we keep all our students safe and healthy.

Volunteer Support

As I have mentioned previously in my K-2 report, we have established some English programs to support our stage 1 students to help consolidate their literacy skills. The 5 Step Sight Word Program aims to strengthen student’s mastery of high frequency and sight words. We request the support of any parents, carers or grandparents who may be interested in working one on one with students for ½ to 1 hour a week, fortnight or month. Times are flexible so any help would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested, please email the school and I will contact you personally to arrange a training session. Thank you in advance for your anticipated support.

Rugby League Gala Day

On Tuesday 28 May the junior and senior rugby league teams went to Nolan’s Reserve to play in a rugby league gala day.

The juniors played four games in total. In the first game they played Curl Curl Public School and won 5 tries to 2 tries. In the second game the juniors played against Mona Vale and won 4 tries to 2 tries. The third game was against Avalon and unfortunately lost 2 tries to 0 tries. The juniors played well and progressed to the semis where they played Narrabeen North. Unfortunately they lost 4 tries to 0 tries.

The seniors played 4 games. The first game was against Curl Curl Public School. We won 5 tries to 2. In the second game the seniors played Harbord and lost 3 tries to 2 but it was still a great game. Our game was against Narrabeen. They played really well and unfortunately we lost 4 tries to 1. Our last game was against Newport but their team had to forfeit so we won by default. Although we came third in our pool we did not advance to the semis.

Thank you Mrs Ward who organised the gala day. Thanks to all the parents who transported us to and from the oval and lastly thank you to the players who showed up and played their hearts out.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Education

This week we recognise National Reconciliation Week (NRW) and Sorry Day (26 May). National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories and cultures and to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant dates: the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

The NRW theme this year is “Grounded in Truth – Walk Together with Courage”. This week, Manly Vale Public School students will have been participating in class discussions and activities such as unpacking the meaning behind the theme for NRW, listening to relevant stories, creating artworks and watching BTN (Behind The News, which is an ABC news program for children) reports in order to learn more about our indigenous culture and history. We hope to share some of these activities in next week’s Bush Telegraph.

Canteen News

A few spaces have become available to help out in the canteen and we would love for some people to volunteer, whether that's Mum, Dad or a grandparent, no experience needed.

The following dates are where we need help:

Monday 24 June 9.00am-1.30pm
Tuesday 25 June 9.00am-1.30pm
Friday 5 July 11.30am-1.30pm

Canteen in need of an ESKY and THERMOS

At recess time the canteen runs a little pop up store near the classrooms. We would love it if there would be anyone who could donate a THERMOS to put hot water in so that we can make hot chocolate for the students at this pop up store. At the same time we are also in need of an ESKY to put all the frozen treats in. Please contact the canteen if you can assist with either request.

New Menu Items

Tom and Emma’s fresh juices – available in cloudy apple and orange juice. The juice comes in a handy 250ml which means your child doesn’t have to drink it all in one hit! As the weather is getting colder we will also be offering hot chocolate and hash browns for recess – please order via Flexischools.

Sausage Sizzle Day

We are having a special sausage sizzle day on Wednesday 12 June. The cost is $5, you can order via Flexischools or over the counter. Each sausage sandwich comes with sauce, a juice popper and a small sweet treat.

Waste Free Wednesday

Please don’t forget to send in a container if your child orders a waste free lunch on Wednesday.
