Principal’s Report
Thank you to Lee Meredith, Kristen Welsh and all of the volunteer Kindy mums and dads who organised and ran the Mother’s Day stall last Friday. It was a great success raising over $9,000 towards the sound system for our new school hall. Thank you Leonie Scholtens who organised the raffle and to every family who sold the tickets, as the raffle contributed $5,000 to the overall takings. The children really enjoyed shopping for their mums and I’m sure the mothers enjoyed receiving their special gifts last Sunday.
NAPLAN Years 3 & 5
For the next 2 weeks all of our year 3 & 5 students will participate in NAPLAN (National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy). The writing task this week was a narrative task and all students completed the task without an interruption. Some schools have reported they had trouble with the Wi-Fi and we can be thankful that our new Wi-Fi set up and installation didn’t cause us any such concerns.
Please remember that NAPLAN is one test on one day. It is a great diagnostic tool for schools to assess teaching programs and to further identify students with learning needs and strengths. It should never be used to compare students or schools. Manly Vale Public School is now completing our 3rd year using the online platform. Our NAPLAN data cannot be used comparatively with other schools that are not yet online.
Always remember that the development of students to receive their full potential and to be prepared for life beyond school should focus on all areas of the curriculum. NAPLAN does not assess our gifted and creative students, our sports champions, our communicators and collaborators who are invaluable in any occupation, our problem solvers and critical thinkers. All of the 21st century skills that our students will require are not assessed in NAPLAN. Your school report and interview with your class teacher is a better way to judge the academic, social and emotional progress of your child.
Volunteers needed!!
Volunteers are required for reading, library and canteen. The canteen currently has 2 paid workers funded by the P & C running the canteen, but unfortunately they are unable to cater for the current demand. Parents and grandparents are welcome to do a 1 hour or 2 hour shift on most days. Please email Robyn or Kerry on manlyvalepscanteen@gmail.com if you are able to assist. To put on another paid assistant would mean an increase in prices and fundraising.
Library helpers - Mrs O’Connor needs parents who are willing to give up the half hour after drop off or before pick up to assist with shelving and helping in the library. The library is a fantastic resource and is being used daily by a lot of children. If you are able to assist with shelving and tidying the library please email Mrs O’Connor manlyvale-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au.
Walk Safely To School Day - Friday 17 May
Tomorrow we encourage all students to walk to school. Form a “walking bus” and pick up your friends on the way. Walking to school is a healthy start to the day and a great way to reduce the parking and traffic concerns around the school. Teachers will be out the front of the school from 8.40am to award students who are walking with stickers.
OC applications - close tomorrow
For all year 4 students who wish to sit the academic placement test for an Opportunity Class, applications close tomorrow. If you wish to apply follow the link below to a guide to the process. Please inform Ms Catherine Thompson or Mrs Lee if you are going to apply for this opportunity.

Waste Free Wednesday
Thank you to all of the families who participated in waste free Wednesday. Congratulations to this week’s winners:
1P with a result of 96%.
CARES Bike Safety
Last week year 5 attended a fantastic excursion to the Honda Driver Training Centre at St Ives to learn about bike safety.
It was a very well run excursion with good variety of theory and lots of time for practical knowledge to be applied. Our students learned about bike maintenance and road rules and also had the opportunity to develop their riding skills on real road simulated conditions including traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and intersections. Some students were even issued with demerit points for making riding errors on the road!
It was a great fun day and very educational. We hope you like the photos below.

Debating
Students at Manly Vale showed so much interest in developing their debating skills that Mrs Radan and Mrs Banham have entered 2 teams into the Premier’s Debating Challenge this year.
Last Thursday, the Manly Vale Foxes and Manly Vale Owls had their first debates against the Beacon Hill Hurricanes and Breakers. We are very happy to report that both teams won their debates.
While the team Foxes debated that ‘bullies should be named and shamed at the school assemblies’ as affirmative; the team Owls debated that ‘each class should have a pet cat or dog as a class pet’ as a negative. Mrs Radan and I were very impressed with the quality of debate that both teams have delivered.
We wish them all the best in the next rounds.
APSMO Maths Olympiads and Maths Games
Manly Vale Public School has entered into the APSMO Maths Olympiad and Maths Games competitions this year. This highly successful program promotes flexible application of problem solving strategies and mathematical reasoning.
Stage 3 students were assessed on their problem solving skills and selected Stage 3 group of students will begin their preparation for the Maths Olympiad and Maths Games competitions. Similarly, to the last year, we run a similar process of selection in Stage 2. A group of carefully chosen students from year 4 and only 5 students from year 3 will enter the Maths Games competition.
We wish all participants best of luck.

Science Stage 2 - the Waste Warrior initiative by 3C
We are Waste Warriors! Waste Warriors are all of stage 2 students. We took 5 minutes of our science time to pick up as much rubbish as we could around the school grounds. Picking up rubbish is important, so animals and our playground are free of rubbish. After our time was up we tallied up the rubbish and found out that plastic had the most and then we told the school about it at the assembly.
By Curtis, Reef and Finlay
Waste Warriors are all the stage 2 classes when they are out and about for five minutes per session. We help the school grounds look tidy by picking up rubbish left there by litterbugs. We also pick up lunch boxes, drink bottles and pencils. Last week we made a graph of all the rubbish we found during the assembly. We tried to convince everyone to pick up rubbish.
By Jake and Neko
We are Waste Warriors! We picked up rubbish for 5 minutes for a few minutes a few weeks ago with our groups during a science lesson. There is a lot of rubbish on our planet. You should try and pick up rubbish as well because it is healthier for our environment. We picked it up on the basketball court, grass area and the nature area.
By Olivia, Gaby and Alicia
Waste Warriors help the environment. We spend 5 minutes of our science lesson picking up rubbish. This year, year 3 and 4 are helping our school. We pick up rubbish in the playground. All together we can save the planet from pollution. We used gloves and clipboards when we were picking up rubbish. Then we tally the rubbish and make a graph. We present it at the assembly on Wednesday. This is important because we need to convince the students to stop littering.
By Kenji and Krishiv
We are Waste Warriors! We protect our school grounds from litterbugs that attack our playground. Our environment will never be healthy if no one looks after it. Eli picked up lots of rubbish. Samuel picked up building materials and Johan picked up a lot of mentos wrappers. That’s why we need to pick up the rubbish! Join us and be a Waste Warrior!
By Samuel, Johan and Eli
Waste Warriors are always cleaning our environment. They’re picking up rubbish and trying to convince others to pick up the rubbish too. Even if it is not theirs. The Waste Warriors are stage 2 students. We clean up the environment by picking up rubbish for only 5 minutes. We tally rubbish and make a graph. We pick up rubbish in different playgrounds. Then we present a speech at an assembly. We do that because we want students to stop littering. We are Waste Warriors! Look after your property and pick up your rubbish!
By Nandika and Hannah
In the morning 3C went on a hunt for rubbish. We found tons of rubbish and there was even more plastic. Waste Warriors are people in year 3 and 4. We pick up rubbish for 5 minutes. We also find some personal belongings like jumpers, lunch boxes and drink bottles. So pick up rubbish even though it might not be yours. We don’t just search in one area. We search in the K-2 cola, 3-6 cola, grass, rocks and the basketball court.
EVERYONE - PICK UP YOUR RUBBISH! WE NEED TO CLEAN UP THE SCHOOL GROUNDS!
By Isabella and Emily
Waste Warriors are about helping the environment by picking up rubbish and making the school clean. The most important thing Waste Warriors do is convincing others to pick up rubbish.
Waste Warriors do this by:
- Going to different parts of the school in small groups and picking up rubbish that we find there EVEN if it is not ours
- Recording what we find
- AND showing the school at assembly each week
It only takes 5 minutes of our science lesson we found more than 50 pieces of rubbish. Just imagine if we did it for half an hour!
By Georgie and Soraya
What are Waste Warriors? We take good care for the school by making it clean. We try to convince everyone to put their rubbish in the bin. We want everyone to pick up their rubbish and belongings. How do Waste Warriors look after the environment? We pick up rubbish even if it is not ours. We spend 5 or more minutes picking up rubbish and stopping the litterbugs.

Learning Support
Stage Three Program
A Word Attack program (similar to the MultiLit Reading Tutor program) has been implemented in Stage 3 to assist targeted students with their decoding and encoding skills (reading and spelling). This program is run by trained volunteers and managed by the Learning Support Team. We thank our amazing volunteers; Kristen, Kyrralyn, Jayne, Kerrie and Dahni for their ongoing support week after week!
If you would like to know more about how to assist with this program and can volunteer one morning per week, please contact Cadence Abrahams from the Learning Support team (via email to the school).

Extra Helpers needed in the canteen
Come and be a part of the Volunteer Canteen helpers. No experience needed and a great way to help and support the school community. As the new and health canteen menu has taken off it has meant we have become even busier preparing all the healthy meals and as well orders are continually increasing, with Friday being our busiest day with approximately 150 lunch orders or more being ordered. Which is fantastic however we need more volunteers to help get all the food out on time. Even if you could help only once a term it would be greatly appreciated or if you could help more often, wonderful!
We have a variety of shifts available:
- 9.00-10.30am MON, TUES, WED (only 1 1/2 hours)
- 9.00-11.30am THURS, FRI (only 2 1/2 hours)
- 9.00am-1.30pm MON, TUES, WED, THURS, FRI (a great way to see the school in action)
- 11.30am-1.30pm THURS, FRI (no food preparation or cooking involved and great fun serving at the counter).
Shifts 1 & 2 involves helping to prepare sandwiches for lunch orders or helping with the baking of such things as our yummy cookies and banana bread.
Shift 3 involves helping in the preparation of sandwiches, lunch orders, baking, and serving at the counter for recess and lunch. (Lunch is provided for those who do this shift)
Shift 4 involves helping to finalize all the lunch orders, placing the lunch orders in class boxers or on the counter and serving at the counter at lunch time.
In all shifts there is some washing up of dishes needing to be done, but with the new dish washer coming this will be reduced.
We are in urgent need for the following shifts to be filled and for further later dates in the term where we need help please refer to the Canteen volunteer roster in the newsletter.

Primary Ethics at Manly Markets
Primary Ethics for the Northern Beaches are having a stand at the Manly Markets this Saturday 18 May. We’re still short of volunteers so we’re on a recruitment drive. If you know someone that might be interested in volunteering please send them along as it’s a great opportunity to come and ask any questions you might have about primary ethics. Some of the Manly Vale volunteers will be there so if you’re at the markets please pop by and say G’day.
