Principal’s Report
Welcome back to school, we hope that you all had a relaxing holiday and are ready for another busy term. This week we commemorated ANZAC Day with a special service on Wednesday in the school hall. Ms Thompson, Ms Pembroke and the School Leaders led us through a very beautiful service where we remembered the loss experienced in war.
“Adopt a Farmer’ Mufti Day- Wednesday 8 May
Next Wednesday the school will be supporting the “Adopt a Farmer” initiative which is to be held across the nation. All proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards farming communities who are doing it tough with crippling drought in NSW and Victoria and both drought and flooding rains in Queensland. All donations will go to Rural Aid who will put $100 on 8000 Visa cards and mail them to registered farmers.
All Manly Vale students are encouraged to dress as a farmer next Wednesday and bring in a gold coin donation. Parents and community members can make cash donations through the school office on the day as well. Students may also like to write positive messages to farmers on the adoptafarmer@news.com.au site.
Reward System - change
After a review of the “Super Owls” merit cards and principal award system by the student welfare committee we have decided to make the following changes:
5 Super Owls = 1 Merit award
5 Merit awards = 1 Principal award
3 (not 5) Principal awards = 1 School Banner
3 School Banners = 1 School Medal
Students can receive merit awards for other activities in class and at assemblies. Please remember to keep all awards and hand them into the class teacher when one of the above milestones is reached. For a full explanation of our reward system please see our school website.

School Cross Country - Monday 6 May
Next Monday all students 8 years and up will participate in the annual School Cross Country carnival. The carnival will be run at David Thomas from 9.30am in the morning until around about lunchtime. Parents are welcome and encouraged to come and watch the event and assist with cheering on the children as they run around the oval. Sports uniform is required for the event and please pack a drink bottle for the day. Thank you to Mr Dylan for his organisation.
Year 5 Dancesport program
This term all year 5 students will participate in the Dancesport Challenge where they will work with an Australian ballroom dancing champion Brad Humphreys, to learn the Cha Cha, Jive, Tango and Salsa. The best 30 couples will go to Homebush to compete in the Dancesport Challenge which is a ballroom dancing competition in Term 3 of this year. This is always a wonderful experience for our Year 5 students as it teaches positive interactions between all students (male and female), building self-esteem and self-confidence. It has been an extremely successful program in previous years and we look forward to a ballroom dancing display towards the end of the program. The first lesson begins this Friday, but will continue on Mondays from week 2.
Winter PSSA begins Friday
Tomorrow students will have their first game in the winter PSSA competition. Please remember to attend training on Friday morning and bring all equipment including mouthguards, shin pads and football boots if required for the sport. Football socks are available for purchase from the uniform shop on Friday mornings.
Mother’s Day Stall - Friday 10 May
On Friday 10 May all students are welcome to purchase from the school’s Mother’s Day stall. Students will need bring in a gift for the stall. Gifts need to be left in the box in the classroom. These gifts will be prepared and sold to the students on Friday 10 May between $5-$10. All profits from the stall will go towards a new sound and audio system for the school hall. Thank you for supporting our first fundraiser for 2019.
NAPLAN online – 13-24 May
All year 3 & 5 students will participate in 4 tests covering reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions. Students will do these tests online and practice is encouraged for students who are not confident using technology. The site below provides example questions and activities for year 3 & 5 students.

Year 4 Photography
Congratulations to all our Year 4 students who participated in a photography course at Manly Dam last term. A photographic exhibition of their work is currently being displayed in the foyer of the school office. Please feel free to come and look at this wonderful display. Additional photos can be viewed on the school website.
Parking Problems
After long discussions with the traffic officer at Northern Beaches Council Traffic consultant, signage will be placed in front of the school and in the car park displaying clear messages about the do’s and don’ts of parking around schools. Rangers will be booking parents who park illegally and across driveways of our neighbours.
Parents please refrain from using the car park at all times unless you require the “disability parking”. It is safer to park down Gibbs St and towards the dam and walk up the street to the school than cause unnecessary congestion in the car park where students are crossing to come and go from school.
Band Meeting - Monday 6 May 7.00pm
Next Monday we will have our band meeting for the term. All parents are welcome to attend. The meeting will be held in the staffroom. Items on the agenda include the school band tour, school band workshop day, upcoming performances and rehearsal feedback from our conductors Carlos and Ben.
School Banner Awards - Pipi Te Pania & Cameron Watson
Congratulations to Pipi Te Pania and Cameron Watson who have earnt a School Banner having achieved 3 Principal Awards. Both girls will receive their banners at tomorrow’s morning assembly from Mrs Lee.
Sick children
Please keep your children at home if they are unwell. When a child is sick, the best place for them is in bed or on the couch to recuperate. We do not have the facilities to look after sick children at school. Parents will be contacted to collect children if they are sent to sick bay. Medical authorities are warning of extreme cases of influenza this term, please assist in limiting the spread of contagious viruses by keeping your child home if they are unwell.

K-2 Assistant Principal’s Report
Shaping little minds for the future through creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking
Dear Parents and Carers,
We would like to wish all our K-2 families a warm welcome back to term 2. It has been wonderful to see our students excited about being back at school. This positive energy and approach to learning is what makes Manly Vale Public School such a unique school to be a part of.
The K-2 team have developed some exciting programs for this term to ensure all students are engaged in our new, future focussed learning space. A note will be sent home soon RE: Year 2 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) sessions.
To support us in meeting our students’ needs we will begin to welcome parent and carer volunteers into our classrooms to assist with the delivery of differentiated learning programs. Your child’s teacher will inform you of sessions they require support for via their class coordinator.
To assist with the science program this term, Ms Fisk is requesting clean, dry, egg cartons to be placed in the collection box outside the science room (opposite KM and KT). Thank you in advance from Ms Fisk.
As I mentioned at the end of last term in my K-2 report, we would like to establish some additional programs to support our stage 1 students moving into term 2. The first initiative is a learning support program to strengthen student’s mastery of sight words. We request the support of any parents, carers or grandparents who may be interested in working one on one with students for ½ to 1 hour a week or fortnight. I would like to sincerely thank the parents who have already offered their support. I have scheduled a training session for Wednesday 8 May at 9:15 in the Library for any helpers who are interested. Thank you.
Please notify the school office if you are interested in supporting this program to help consolidate and strengthen our students’ literacy skills. If you have provided your name already it will be on the list. Thank you.
Carol Speight - K-2 Assistant Principal

Learning Support
Volunteers needed!
Parents, Carers, Grandparents, Relatives, Friends and Members of the Community – we need your help! Do you have a spare morning to help some students with literacy?
We are looking for volunteers to support our students with developing their reading skills. This is an intensive literacy program (called MultiLit/Word Attack) that is separate to the work that children carry out in the classroom. The lessons are prescribed and you will be given all the necessary training and resources to support the delivery of the program. Volunteers will be working with children from years 2-6 in the break-out spaces between classrooms. If you are able to come in 1 or 2 mornings per week we would love to hear from you!
If you enjoy working with children and would like to be part of our school community please email the school manlyvale-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au with contact details with ATTN to: The LST Literacy program.
You will require a free voluntary Working with Children Check, which we can provide further details. Training will take place in the next few weeks. It is a fabulous and rewarding experience to support the development of children’s learning. We look forward to hearing from you!

Stewart House Donation Drive 2019
Stewart House envelopes were distributed to families this week. If your child did not receive an envelope, you can use a normal envelope with your name, your phone number and your email address details or you can pick one up from the school office. Please return envelopes to school by Friday 17 May.
Woolworths Earn & Learn
The Woolworths Earn & Learn program gives schools around Australia the chance to earn amazing school equipment.
Between 1 May and 25 June 2019 collect as many stickers as you can. With every $10 spent at Woolworths, one sticker is collected. To help boost your sticker collection, look out for the range of participating products in store which will earn you double stickers.
These can be placed onto the Earn & Learn sticker sheets. Sticker sheets are available at the link below and will also be provided in the front office. Sticker sheets can be dropped into the collection box in store or to the front office at Manly Vale Public School.
