Principal’s Report
We have had a very busy week with school tours and information nights. Thank you to all parents who have attended these evenings and to all the teachers for taking the time to inform parents of routines and procedures for their classes. Our final information nights are:
Thursday 21 February - Stage 1 (years 1 & 2)
Tuesday 26 February - Stage 2 (years 3 & 4)
School tours will be conducted on both of these evenings from 5.30pm. Information evenings start at 6.00pm. If you missed the night please make sure that you complete the yellow slip sent home so you can be included on the class email list. We hope to have a list of all parents in classes and a class coordinator for every class by next week.
SRE (Scripture) and Ethics (SEE) Classes
Last Wednesday we had our first SEE and SRE classes. It was a smooth start to the year and thank you to Mrs Clair O’Connor who has spent a lot of hours organising classrooms, class lists and teacher supervision for these classes. Unfortunately there is now a waitlist for some Ethics classes with new enrolments coming in this week. New teachers will need to be trained in Ethics in order to form additional classes. If you are interested in training to be an Ethics teacher please make contact with Lorna Galt at mvps.ethics@gmail.com.
SEE and SRE classes take place every Wednesday morning from 9.00am-9.35am. Classes running this year are:
Baha’i, Protestant, Catholic and Ethics
Children not attending these classes will go into non-scripture classes supervised by classroom teachers. Changes to Scripture and Ethics classes can only be done at the end of a term due to the complicated organisation of rooms and supervision required. Students must have written permission from their parents for a change to take place.
PSSA begins
This week we will have the first round of our summer PSSA sports. Please remember that training is usually scheduled for Friday mornings. The $55 payment for PSSA must be received as this covers the bus hire to and from the sporting venues. Specialised protective gear including shin pads, mouth guards etc. is supplied by parents. Good luck to all our teams this Friday for their first game.
SRC
This Friday we have our first SRC meeting of the year. The meeting takes place in the hall at 11.30am. Parents are welcome to watch this meeting if they wish. The meeting is run by our Student Leaders with all Student Representatives of all 22 classes in attendance to debate and vote on suggestions from classes. Thank you to Mr Dylan and Mrs Blackband for your organisation.
Congratulations Kristen!
Congratulations to Kirsten Evans in 5R who competed in the Little Athletics Regional Championship earlier this month and came third in the Under 11 Girls 60m Hurdles. She has qualified to compete in the NSW State Championship in Homebush next month.
Junior Band Conductor - Position vacant
We have had a few applications for the Junior Band Conductor position. Currently we have had Ben Dickson and some casual conductors filling in. We hope to secure a conductor within the next week.
New Office Staff
We have 2 new office staff beginning next week. Mrs Kriszta Kovacs and Mrs Toni Gurr who will be assisting in the library and office areas. Our new General Assistant is Barry Warriner who has been doing a wonderful job assisting with the moving, cleaning and maintenance of our new school.
Swedish School Begins
Every Wednesday evening the Swedish school operates language classes within our school. There are currently 4 classes in the school run by the Community language program. Classes go for about 8-10 weeks a term from 5-7pm.

Swimming Carnival
Thank you to all the parent helpers, students, spectators and staff for their wonderful involvement at the Swimming Carnival last Tuesday. The weather was hot this year and participation from the children was excellent. I would like to extend a special thanks to all the parents that were involved in helping out on the day. Whether it was being a lifesaver or assisting with timekeeping your efforts were appreciated. Thank you to everyone for being so patient with the new timing system. We had a few hiccups throughout the day but managed to get through all the events on the program.
Ribbons and announcement of the winning house will be announced at next week’s Friday morning assembly 1 March. A note will be sent home with children soon if they are to attend the Zone Carnival on Monday 11 March. Students who had the fastest 3 times in the 50m freestyle, or the 2 fastest times in all other events will represent Manly Vale Public School at this carnival.
Congratulations to all the children who participated and the wonderful achievements.
Melinda Ward and Sarah Birrell
Band Captain Badges
The 2019 Band Captains will be announced and presented with their badges at next week’s Friday assembly, 1 March. The Band Captains were voted in by their fellow band members to represent the school’s band. It is quite an achievement to have been committed members of our band program and to continue in year 6 when there are so many extra commitments already. The elected Band Captains have shown exemplary musicianship and behaviour and are reliable band members. Congratulations to all nominees and to the elected Captains.

School Photos
Our Manly Vale Public School photos are fast approaching. On Thursday 7 March, Advancedlife Photos will be at our school to take photos of the whole school, classes and families/siblings.
Today children have been sent home with an order form outlining different options for photos if you wish to purchase them. You may pay for your school photos via the secure online advancedorder web portal specifically set up for our school using the unique 9-digit online order code P2B 27Y HEW. Parents who place their order online DO NOT need to return the order envelope. Only families who wish to pay via cheque or cash will need to return the order envelope to the school prior to photo day.
http://www.advancedlife.com.au/
Sibling/family photos may be ordered online using the same code above or via a special sibling order envelope which can be collected at the office. Please note that sibling photos are only for siblings who are enrolled at Manly Vale Public School.
Please ensure that your child/children come to school on photo day wearing their neatest and cleanest full school uniform (black shoes, white socks, red shorts, white polo or school dress) and presentable hair.
Please note that students who do not have permission to be photographed WILL be included in the full school photo & their class photo unless you advise the school in writing.

Surf Education
Last week our stage 3 students headed off to Manly Beach for some important and fun surf awareness experiences. The students spent several hours developing skills in wading and duck diving, ocean swimming and board riding. There were even some board rescues (planned and unplanned!)
The excursion followed an in-school talk that was given at school last week which covered aspects such as identifying and avoiding rips, getting out of dangerous situations and how to read and handle surf conditions.
We thank SEA Australia for sharing their knowledge with us! It was a memorable and exciting day and the children and teachers alike had a wonderful time.
