Principal’s Report
It is hard to believe that I am writing the last newsletter for 2018. On reflecting on the year during our final assemblies and meetings, it seems the year has flown past probably due to the amount of activity we have had in the school.
2018 has been a year of change and transition for everyone. The office staff have had to adjust to a new finance and HR system, the school has trialed online NAPLAN, undergone a full review and assessment from an external team during an External Validation process, adjusted to the changes as a result of the new school construction. It has been challenging at times but the end result is worth it in the end. We look forward to opening the gates to a brand new school in 2019.
Congratulations - State Dance
Congratulations to Toby Marsters, Katie Birch, Talia Stedman and Emily Levingstone in being selected for the State Dance Ensemble. This is an incredible opportunity for them all and a real achievement. Well-done dancers! We are all very proud!
Farewell Year 6 2018
It is with great sadness that we farewell our current Year 6 students and wish them all the best as they move onto high school. Tomorrow they will have the end of year picnic down at Manly Water Works, followed by:
- Graduation Ceremony - Monday 17 December, School Hall 1.00pm
- Graduation Dinner - Tuesday 18 December, School Hall 6.00pm
- End of year clap out – Wednesday 19 December - 2.45pm
It will be a sad day for the children, their teachers and parents. Many of the parents in this year’s Year 6 cohort have been the volunteers for café owl, band, canteen and uniform shop. Thank you to all those parents who have contributed to the school in so many ways. You will be greatly missed. Enjoy the journey as your now negotiate the high school years.
To the students, thank you for your contribution to the school in your leadership positions, as part of the “Buddy” program and as leaders of the Student Representative Council. We have certainly all enjoyed your organisation of discos, mufti days, SRC meetings and carnivals. Good luck in high school and please come back and visit us. Thank you to the Year 6 teachers Mrs Cash and Mrs O’Connor this year, capably led by Mr Dylan (Assistant Principal) and farewell to Miss Phillips who leaves us to go onto new and exciting roles within the department. Thank you for the extra organisation of these farewell events for year 6 at the end of the year.
Farewell Manly Vale Public School families
It is always a sad time as we farewell some of our families who are moving schools or out of the area. We wish the following families all the best in their new adventures:
George Morris, Tom Stevens, Oliver Sherlock, Sean Daniell, Matt Hansen, Sam Hansen, Joseph Rafferty, Keoni Dal Osto, Jack Kirkwood, Imogen Kirkwood, Aliy Ni, Beatriz Juliao Ruiz.
Mini-Fest
Thank you to Mr Dylan, Mrs Cash, Mrs O’Connor and the Year 6 students for the Mini-fest celebrations last Friday. We had sponge throwing, laser tag, a haunted house, obstacle courses, football passing and a variety of other fundraising activities and stalls organised and run by our year 6 students. This followed a very successful peer support sport morning also run by year 6 and Mrs Blackband. It was a great day for students and teachers and certainly a lot of fun! Thank you year 6.

Band end of year Christmas Concert
Last Wednesday night we had our end of year band xmas concert. It was a lovely way to wrap up the year. Thank you to our band captains Kaeli Chew and Noah Corner who hosted the evening and to all the committee for their contributions to the evening. Our committee this year has been enthusiastic and raised the profile of the band within the school through their implementation of the new band logo, uniform and increased events. Next year the band will go on tour for a few days. It is a very exciting time for the band as we now have a new school hall to accommodate increased enrolments and expand our program to cater for a bigger school. Thank you to our committee below:
President - John Logan
Secretary - Helena Edgerton
Senior Band Liaison - Manuela Curzon
Junior Band Liaison - Glenys Beaumont
Instrument Hire - Turia Mako
Special thanks to Gergely Malyusz and Ben Dickson our conductors for a very successful year tutoring and conducting our band. We look forward to 2019.
Talent Quest
Today was our annual talent quest. It is great to see students performing a variety of acts in front of their peers. Congratulations to all contestants for being brave enough to perform.
Picnic Days - Stage 2 & 3
Tomorrow Friday 14 December will be our picnic days for Years 3-6. Our stage 2 students will go down to David Thomas for a sausage sizzle and water fun/jumping castle morning. Our stage 3 students will slip and slide at Manly Water Works. Please make sure the students wear sun cream, hats and covered in shoes (no thongs or sandals) to these events. Sun protection and correct footwear is compulsory on these days.
Thank you
As the year ends up I would like to acknowledge and thank the office staff Pam Davison (School Administration Manager) Luise Nealon, Ann Baleisis and Annabel Marsden (School Administration Officers) for all their work behind the scenes in making sure our school runs smoothly. This year has been particularly challenging for them all with the introduction of new finance and HR systems and juggling the communication required around a construction site. Looking after your children is always a top priority and I must personally acknowledge Mrs Davison who often stays back to ensure children are all accounted for and safely home. The office staff has been extremely supportive of the hard working executive team Mrs Carol Speight, Mrs Nicole Blackband, Mr Patrick Dylan, Mrs Sarah Humphreys and Mrs Karen Lucey. It has been a very busy year for them and their support of myself and the staff and students has been invaluable this year.
Thank you also to our teachers who work tirelessly to provide exciting and new learning experiences for our children. We farewell our general assistant Grant Lee next week as his replacement Mr Barry Warriner is due to start in February.
2019
Our new school will have dedicated access pathways through the front playground (from the front office area and from the canteen area). The front playground will not be open until April. Construction will continue during term 1 to landscape the front playgrounds. All classrooms will be removed during the school holidays with the first classrooms going this Saturday. An email will be sent out around the end of January with details of access points and instructions on where to meet on the first day. Evacuation plans and induction processes are being administered to staff in the final week of their holidays. I want to thank all the staff for their cooperation in enabling this Term 1 Day 1 start to happen.
Merry Xmas
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for a fantastic year and wish you all the best for a safe and happy holiday season. We look forward to welcoming our new Kindergarten students for 2019.

School Student Transport Scheme 2019 Applications (including Opal Cards)
School Student applications for 2019 open from Monday 15 October 2018. Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 do not need to re-apply if they:
- Are continuing at the same school;
- Are residing at the same address;
- Have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.
Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to
https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails
Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.
Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.
