Principal’s Report
Skipathon
The excitement building for our school Skipathon is building. Students are practising their skipping skills and trying to improve their skill and fitness ability so they can make the continuous 1 hour skipping target set to raise funds for our school. The funds raised will go towards classroom resources for students and to supplement the $13,000 raised at the trivia night so as to put a new sound system in the new school hall. Thank you to Penny Dixon and Carol Speight for their organisation of this event.
School Leaders 2019
Year 5 is currently in the process of finalising their school leader nominations for 2019. Congratulations to all students who bravely and proudly stood for the opportunity to become a school leader in 2019. The final 16 nominations will be announced at the Friday’s assembly. The years 3-5 students will vote on the final 16 nominations to elect the school captains, vice captains and prefects for 2019. These will be announced at Celebration of Learning on Thursday 6 December.
PSSA Semi Finals
Good luck to our senior boys eagle tag teams, junior girls eagle tag team and the newcombe ball A team in this week’s semi finals. All other teams have organised friendly games for the afternoon.
Stranger Danger
This week we have had an incident of a car following some year 5 students. Please talk to your children about safe strategies when walking home and report all incidents to the Police.
New School
This Friday at Café Owl there will be an information booth for parents to ask questions regarding the move and transition into the new school. There will be a photo display and opportunity to ask questions about the new school. Please feel free to come up and visit the booth this week.
The new school will house a new OOSH space and therefore all demountables will be leaving the site over the Christmas holidays. The old canteen will be retained as Café Owl into the new school environment but all other buildings other than the current administration block will be demolished or removed from the site.
P & C AGM
Last Tuesday night our P & C had their Annual General meeting for 2018. The pleasing outcome of the meeting is that we will have stability this year with the same executive being retained for another year. Our new executive for 2019 is:
President- James Fewtrell
Vice President- Helen
Gay
Treasurer- Tony Sherlock
Secretary- Karen Murtgatroyd
Class Coordinator-
Kristen Te Pania
Thank you to all of these parents for their ongoing commitment to the school and giving up so much of their time in support of the school. This year we have transitioned into a new canteen set up where the school is fully compliant with the Healthy Canteen Policy. Our 2 part time paid positions (Kerrie & Robyn) have managed to deliver an excellent service to the school for the year. Thank you to our P & C for financing this service to the community and to Helen Gay and Denise Fisher for overseeing the transition and changes in the canteen.
The uniform shop run by Helen Gay and Wendie McDougall has been a great success this year and they have had to work out of a small shed at the back of the canteen. Although online ordering hasn’t been as successful as predicted, personal sales are on the rise and the uniform shop is beginning to turn a profit. Thank you to Wendie and Helen for all their work this year in the uniform shop.
It is important to acknowledge and thank the P & C for running these 2 businesses within our school and keeping prices down to a minimum for families.
Mrs Lee on leave
Next week from Wednesday 21 November until the following Thursday 29 November I will be on leave for my daughter’s wedding. Mrs Carol Speight will be relieving principal during this time.
Classes for 2019
Teachers and executive staff make the classes for students going into the next year. If you have any concerns or information you would like to share regarding your child and where they are placed for 2019 please feel free to email the school or the teacher. As this is a very busy time for the school as teachers are writing reports and finishing up the year and packing to go into a new school, please refrain from making personal appointments with staff and executive. Remember that teachers know where your child is best placed for learning, friendship groupings are only one of a list of criteria used to make up classes.
Leaving next year?
Please notify the school as soon as possible if you are intending on leaving next year. We are currently in the process of employing staff for 2019 and we will need to know if you are intending to leave the school.
School Fees
Please finalise all school fees this week. The year is just about over and all activities, textbooks, excursions are complete. It is extremely important that these school fees are paid in order to cover outstanding fees and costs.

Years 5 & 6 Robotics
Over the last couple of weeks, stage 3 have been able to experience specialised Robotics sessions in our classrooms at school. Specialised robotics teacher brought all the technology and know how for an engaging and informative day of learning.
Here's what some of our students said:
"We learnt how to make a robot with a sensor at the front. And we programmed it to walk along different courses and turn corners and turn around when we wanted it to. "
"We programmed our robot to battle one on one with another robot and win by knocking it over. "
"It was fascinating to see how you could use coding to program a robot to make so many different movements."
"Our Robot was third-generation! We saw some cool videos on how robotics has progressed over the years."
Here are some pictures of some of the year 6 robotics students.

Remembrance Day
On Friday 9 November, Stage 3 walked down to Manly Dam to take part in the Remembrance Day service. The service was touching and a valuable learning experience for all students.
Congratulations to Kyan McDougall, one of our school captains, who delivered an emotive speech about World War 1. Kyan spent a number of weeks researching information in order to compile his speech. We are so proud of his efforts and this is a testament to his exceptional leadership skills.
Our other school captains and vice-captains, Dakota Birch, Sarah Hills and Carter Sengchanh, placed a wreath and a book at the memorial site on behalf of the school.
Mrs Humphreys

2019 Student Leadership Process
As we start to imagine a school without our current year 6 students and the wonderful leaders they have been this year, we have started planning for the elections of our 2019 School Captains from the current year 5 student body. This week year 5 chose their nominees who will present speeches at a special assembly on Wednesday 28 November. The students will write their speeches a day before that during school time and they will have that night to put it onto palm cards and practise as much as they can over the next 24 hours. After the assembly, classes from years 3, 4 & 5 along with staff will vote for 4 boys and 4 girls to make up Manly Vale Public School’s student leadership team for 2019. The 8 students will be announced a few days later with their specific roles being announced at the Celebration of Learning in week 8.
The year 5 students who have been voted in by their peers as nominees to represent their year at this year’s elections include:
Girls |
Boys |
Maya Gado |
Toby Marsters |
Trisha Khapung |
Josh Slatter |
Tilly Graham |
Morgan Armstrong-Jones |
Mia Lougher |
Blaise Farkas |
Talia Stedman |
Jake Van de Water |
Holly Thompson |
Miles Middleton |
Diya Malhotra |
Callum Matheson |
Scout Twidale |
Xavier Brown |
Samuel Romeo |
A massive congratulations to all students who put themselves forward as being willing to step up and help run this wonderful school of ours. Not being voted in or chosen for something you volunteer for may not feel great but all the world’s best leaders have had many dips and turns on their road to greatness. It is only by picking yourself up, dusting yourself off and then putting your hand up for another go that you can truly achieve your goals.

- Are continuing at the same school;

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to
https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updatedetails
Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.
Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.
