Principal’s Report
Principal For the Day
Last Friday Pipi and Reuben Te Pania enjoyed being the Principals for the Day. This prize was an auction item at this year’s Trivia Night. Both students enjoyed presenting Principal stickers and awards, addressing the assembly and visiting classrooms. They shared a beautiful morning tea with their friends and the executive staff members. They enjoyed the tour of the principal’s office and seeing where all the awards and “white cards” were kept. Thank you Pipi and Reuben for allowing me to have the day off school. I’m sure all the students at Manly Vale Public School enjoyed having you as their leaders that day. Well done on a great job!
Bear Pit Public Speaking
Congratulations to Bodhi Hansen and Pipi Te Pania on their outstanding speeches at Parliament House last Monday. Both students spoke from the heart and represented our school at the Bear Pit Public speaking competition. It was a great achievement to win the school competition and then go on to represent us at this major event. Well done!

Zone Athletics
The last 2 days we have had a team of 40 students attend the Zone Athletics carnival at Narrabeen Sports Field. Both days Mr Dylan and Mrs Birrell have reported that the students were well behaved, demonstrating a positive competitive spirit and keen to support and cheer their fellow team members on. Results will be published in next week’s newsletter.
Tournament of the Minds
Last Sunday our Tournament of the Minds school team represented our school at the annual competition. This activity is part of our Gifted and talented programs. The team consisted of 7 members including Mia Nethery, Sam Romeo, Jake Van De Water, Morgan Andrews, Poppy Pickering and Scout Twidale. These students had to work together on a STEM project after school for 5 weeks. The students presented a drama piece, accompanied by a homemade video and artworks, on a mythical creature. Congratulations to all the students involved in the project and a big thank you to Mrs Banham who assisted the students through the workshops each week and spent her day at Roseville College adjudicating a variety of presentations. It was a great experience for all.

Buses
This week a note was sent home asking all parents to apply for or purchase an Opal card for travel to and from school. Currently both the 618 and 620 buses are over capacity however when applying for the bus there is only a few students swiping an opal card so therefore the need for a new bus is not registering. As a temporary solution the 618 afternoon bus run has been given a “Bendy” bus to try and alleviate the pressure on both buses. Please encourage your child to catch the 618 if they are able to in the afternoons as there is more space on that bus.
All students will be expected to have an Opal card by Monday 10 September. If they do not have the card they will not be able to catch the bus.
Fathers’ Day Breakfast - Friday 31 August
This Friday we invite all our dads to come and join us for breakfast. There is bacon and egg rolls and coffee on sale. Please pre-order your bacon and egg rolls prior to Friday using the link below as there will be no cash orders available on the day. Classrooms will be open from 7.30am and the choir will be performing on the back basketball court at 8.45am, with a whole school assembly held afterwards. Please come along and enjoy the morning with your children.
Instrument Allocation Test (IAT)
This week Ben and Gergely conducted instrument allocation tests for our interested year 2 students. Our conductors allocate instruments that are best suited to your child’s needs. Please return all paperwork required to register for the Junior Band to Ms Stacey. The new Junior Band will begin tuition in Term 4 in preparation for 2019. Information books and registration forms for new members are available at the front office.
Parent Workshops
Over the last few weeks Mrs Speight has been running some parent information topics on various topics of interest. Thank you to all parents who have attended. This Friday the workshop is on curriculum (Stage 1). The workshop is in the Tech room at 2.00pm. Registration is via the front office. All welcome.
Stage 3 Camp - 5-8 September
Our year 5 and 6 students will be heading off to the Great Aussie Bush camp next week for 3 days. This camp is always a fantastic experience for our senior students as they participate in a variety of outdoor activities. Please make sure final payments are made this week and all permission notes returned. Thank you to Mr Dylan for his organisation of camp and to Mrs Humphreys, Mrs Cash, Mr Dylan, Ms Martin and Mrs Ward for attending camp.
Staff Training
Last Saturday all our staff were trained in their CPR, anaphylaxis and emergency care procedures. The compulsory training was done by all staff last Saturday which allows them to finish school on the last Thursday of Term 4 rather than the Friday. We also had a visit from the Work Health and Safety Department this week who were very impressed with our safety training procedures and the maintaining of a safe site during construction.

Book Week Celebrations!
Find Your Treasure!
Last Thursday Manly Vale celebrated Book Week with a wonderful dress up day. The response by the students and teachers to the theme “Find Your Treasure!” was outstanding. We gathered or a whole school assembly and Captain Poole and her trusty band of library monitors regaled the captured audience with a presentation of their most treasured books! In the afternoon all students gathered for a whole school Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) time on the oval. Happy Reading was shared by all!

Narrabeen Coastal Environment Centre
Last week, Stage 1 went on an excursion to the Narrabeen Coastal Environment Centre. The students engaged in a variety of activities in and around the Narrabeen Head Aquatic Reserve. Some highlights of the day included exploring the rock pools for living creatures, creating sand art using natural objects and designing a working water filter. All students had a fantastic day and were able to apply the knowledge and skills they are gaining in their classrooms in this amazing setting. It was fantastic to see the students working in teams to create their filters and art works. A big thank you goes out to all the parents who attended on the days. Your support with activities and supervision was greatly appreciated!

2018 Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition
On Monday 27 August, I had the wonderful pleasure in watching Pipi Te Pania (4K) and Bodhi Hanson (6OL) represent Manly Vale Public School at Parliament House in the annual ‘Bear Pit Public Speaking’ Competition (the next level on from Manly Vale’s ‘On Your Soapbox’ Public Speaking Competition) led by local MP James Griffin. Both students represented Manly Vale with great pride and delivered their speeches to the best of their ability. The competition was tough and while we did not bring home any winners, it was a valuable and rewarding experience for Pipi and Bodhi and one event they will never forget. Congratulations on your efforts!
Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition by Pipi Te Pania (4K)
“On Monday Bodhi and I went to Parliament House for the Bear Pit speaking competition. All the speakers were amazing and the competition was strong! Although we didn’t win we both received many compliments from the audience and walked away proud of what we had achieved. Thank you to Mrs Humphreys for all your support and coming to watch us. It was a privilege and honour to represent Manly Vale. This will be an experience I will never forget, thank you for this opportunity.”
Mrs Humphreys - Public Speaking Coordinator
Girls Soccer PSSA
A huge thank you to all the girls who tried out for PSSA soccer this year. There was an overwhelming number of students keen to represent Manly Vale in Friday PSSA Competitions. Congratulations to all the girls on their commitment to early morning trainings and their outstanding sportsmanship during some very tough games.
Well done to all the Junior and Senior A and B teams, and to those who made semi-finals. Special congratulations to the Junior A team who won their Grand Final making them the Junior A PSSA Champions for 2018.
We look forward to everyone trying out again next year!
Mrs Blackband and Miss Martin – Girls soccer coaches

GATS Programs
The Game Changer Challenge
During term 2, Jacob Mako, Mia Lougher, Mia Nethery, Scout Twidale, Morgan Andrews, Jake Van De Water and Xavier Brown were working together to present to the school community their view on ‘What will the future school look like?'. This challenge was part of the Education Week program.
Students have created an engaging and interactive drama presentation that included digital media and futuristic solutions. I was challenged with a script writing role and the team members choreographed the play and designed their props and routines. The group debuted in front of kind K-2 audience and their parents.
While we can speculate what the future education may look like, our brain trust is confident that we will still need the human teachers, collaborative skills, creative tasks and strong friendships to help us look after our environment together.
It was a pleasure to work with this group of students.
The Premier’s Debating Challenge
Recently I was informed about our debating zone results. While Manly Vale debaters have won 3 out of 4 debates, it turned out that 3 other teams finished with the same result. This means that there is a four-way tie in our group. I will advise the details of the playoff as soon as they are released.
The Tournament of Minds team
Last Sunday, the Tournament of Minds team Mia Nethery, Morgan Andrews, Scout Twidale, Jake Van De Water, Xavier Brown, Poppy Pickering and Samuel Romeo presented their STEM long-term challenge at Roseville College. They created a model of an unusual creature called Albeteel and presented its scientific details to the judges. The team made an exciting video and had to overcome some technical difficulties on the day.
The teams are also required to attempt a spontaneous challenge which exposes students' group thinking processes, teamwork strategies and spontaneous creative thinking. The team has only 4 minutes to address the challenge and 1 minute to present it. It is an extremely challenging task, and our team enjoyed being presented with such a challenge.
I was very impressed with their composure and creativity during preparation and presentation on the day. Well done TOM Team!

Welfare Support
Teaching your child about the
importance of making friends is as vital as learning their
ABCs.
Cathrine Neilsen-Hewett, a child development expert at
Macquarie University, says if children are happy socially they tend to be
more engaged in their learning. She says children who are on their way to
developing a healthy social life and good learning strategies:
- have good self-control skills such as sitting still and listening quietly
- work easily in small or large groups
- follow directions and cooperate with others.
What can you do?:
- Guide children to control their impulses.
- Role model good social behaviour, turn-taking etc, for your child.
- Be aware that many children prefer just one special friend.
- Help your child think of ways to start conversations or games with others.
- Invite other children over for play dates and watch their behaviour.
- Speak to your child's teacher if your child is having difficulties making friends.
