Principal’s Report
Congratulations to all our finalists in the K-2 public speaking competition last Friday. I was sorry not to attend the final competitions for the On Your Soap Box public speaking this year as it is such a highlight to see how confident our students do become in their presentations when they compete in the finals. Special mention to Zac Keanly (KB), Olivia Taylor (KM), Abigail Wilson (1/2S), George Morris (2GC) on winning their stage finals.
Good luck to Pipi Te Pania and Bodhi Hanson as they represent our school at the Bear Pit Public Speaking finals at Parliament House next Monday.
New School Build- Commissioning meeting
This week we had our first commissioning meeting for the new school. These meetings are to work through the handover process as we transition from the old school to the new school. The intention is to move all of the contents from the old buildings up into the new classrooms during the Christmas holiday break. The new school is to be handed over to us in January for the start of the 2019 school year.
Last week some of the staff attended a professional training session at Harbord Public School to see how the teachers there were using the new 21st century furniture and technology. All staff came back very excited and are beginning to trial the new teaching methods within their current classrooms.
During the September/October school holidays the current holiday program run by the primaryOSHcare group will be fully operational. The old hall will not be demolished during this break as the new hall will not be quite ready for use, therefore the demolishment of the old hall will not occur until the December holidays. The school site will have limited access for community during both these holiday periods as the holiday program will need all the remaining area during the September/October period. There will be no access for anyone including primaryOSHCare over the Christmas holiday period.
Principal For The Day- Friday 24 August
Tomorrow we will have Pipi and Reuben Te Pania take on the principal role. Pipi and Reuben will address the assembly on Friday morning and visit classrooms, attend executive meetings and spend the day in the front office. I am looking forward to my day of leisure tomorrow.
Book Week- Find Your Treasure
This week Mrs Poole has organised many great activities around the Book Week theme of “Find your Treasure”. Today we had a whole school dress up day where students came dressed as pirates/book characters to celebrate Book Week 2018. We have had visiting authors Bronwyn Vaughan and Mark Greenwood (next week), peer reading and sharing of our favourite stories, treasure hunts and activities in the library and a whole school dress up day. Thank you to Mrs Poole who makes every Book Week so special for all the students of Manly Vale.
Congratulations Mali Lovell- ex-student
Mali Lovell an ex-student of Manly Vale Public School has just returned from the Cerebral Palsy World Games in Barcelona. Her mum Mel and her spent 10 days in Barcelona where Mali won 4 gold medals for the T36 100m, 200m, 400m and the 800m. Mali is one of 17 million people in the world with Cerebral Palsy and a truly amazing champions and role model for all people. We are so proud of Mali and her achievements. Cleo her sister is one of our current school leaders.

Want to join the School Band?
Last Tuesday night we had a Band information night. If you weren’t able to come to the night you can still register your interest with the band by completing the attached form and sending it into school. Ben Dickson our Band Director is able to run some additional information sessions next Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon at about 2.30pm. If you are interested please email the school. If there is enough interest we will run another session. Any age child is able to join the band program from Year 2 – Year 6. Just fill in the attached application form and send it into school. Next Monday and Tuesday interested children will be withdrawn from class and will be assessed as to what is the most suitable instrument they should learn. Buses
Currently both the 618 and 620 buses are very over crowded. I am currently trying to get an additional bus. Please make sure your child has their opal card and uses it for their journey so as we can register the numbers of children using the school service.
PSSA Finals

2018 ‘On Your Soapbox’ Public Speaking Competition
On Monday 13 and Friday 17 August, Manly Vale Public School held its 2018 ‘On Your Soapbox’ public speaking competition. It was a highly successful event where students, parents and teachers were able to watch two representatives from each K-6 class present their speeches at the ‘On Your Soapbox’ assembly.
It was clear to see that the standard of public speaking has taken a giant step forward at Manly Vale due the fantastic display of public speaking talent presented by the speakers. They were all so passionate, enthusiastic and confident about their topics and I congratulate all of them for the amount of effort and dedication each and every one of them put in to prepare, practice and deliver their speeches. Well done especially to the Kindergarten students who showed great bravery and courage by speaking in front of a large audience perhaps for the very first time.
One student from Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and one student from Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) have been selected to represent our school at the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition hosted by the Member for Manly, James Griffin, at Parliament House on Monday 27 August. I would like to congratulate Pipi Te Pania from 4K who delivered a speech on the topic ‘Everyone needs a dream’ and Bodhi Hanson from 6OL who presented a speech on the topic ‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’ for being our selected speakers. We wish the students all the best and know that they will do Manly Vale proud no matter the result.
Once again, congratulations to all the finalists who represented their class at the competition - we are all very proud of you.

Science excursion reflections
Last week over 140 students went to the Australian Museum to celebrate Science Week. Each class attended workshops and fully engaged with interactive activities there.
Here are some of the students’ reflections.
We went into a room and took our
shoes off ready to go into a planetarium. The wonders that we saw were
incredible! Who knew that a little blow-up dome would be so wonderful!
After that, we went to a show where we could touch the clouds and watch
amazing experiments and we were on the edge of our seats! After that, we
learnt how to make an elephant toothpaste learnt about gems and even made
slime.
Pipi 4K
It was amazing to make slime. It was
dripping all over me, but I was ok with it.
Isaac 4K
I have lots of fun when we made
slime and played with fake snow! I liked using a microscope to look at
things really closely. I had lots of fun at the museum with all of my
friends!
Cammi 4K
My favourite memory from the
excursion was extracting a strawberry DNA and watching experiments with
liquid nitrogen.
Adler 3C
It was so much fun! We went to the
Aboriginal Medicine and Food workshop and we saw a Giant Short-Nosed
Kangaroo.
Cleo 3B
My favourite part of the Australian
Museum was when we used all different acids to make a reaction and we used
cabbage juice to add onto it which made it change colour.
Iona 3B
My favourite part was seeing three
different types of crabs - one of them was orange.
Luca 3C
On Thursday the whole stage 2 went
on the best science excursion ever! We mixed chemicals and they turned
purple, pink, green and blue. Then we mixed them all together and it turned
really dark purple!
Sophia
3B
I really liked the optical illusion
and the Aboriginal medicine and food workshop. I liked getting the
strawberry DNA and watch liquid nitrogen. The best part of the excursion
was EVERYTHING!

“Find Your Treasure! “
A week filled with wonderful books, pirates and treasures!
Book Fair
Thank you to all the families who so generously bought from our book fair. We were able to take a healthy commission which will be used to purchase new non-fiction books for the library. A special thank you to the families who donated selected books to the library. They are being processed with a dedication nameplate on the first page. Your child is welcome to be the first to borrow their donated book.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading challenge is nearly over. Final date for entries is Friday 31 August, week 6.
Please make sure your child’s reading record is complete, K-2 30 titles, and 3-6 20 titles. If you have any questions please contact Mrs Poole.
Performance by Bronwyn Vaughan
K-2 children enjoyed a wonderful performance by storyteller Bronwyn Vaughan. She brought to life three traditional tales, from Germany, India and Turkey. The children were enchanted by the costumes, puppetry and music.
Happy Reading

The importance of getting active!
Regular physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Making physical activity a priority and encouraging good habits in children from an early age is important and can help them to develop the skills they need to be active throughout their lives.
Why is being active important?
Children benefit greatly from being active as it can:
- Promote healthy growth and development
- Build strong bones and muscles
- Improve movement skills
- Improve cardiovascular fitness
- Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight
- Improve academic achievement
- Help relaxation
- Provide opportunities to make friends
- Improve self-esteem and self-confidence
Children who are not physically active enough will not have the opportunity to gain these benefits and are at an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese long term can contribute to conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and heart disease.
iPLAY on Father’s Day
Father's Day is September 2. There are plenty of physical activities kids can do with their dad whilst spending quality time together. Here are a few suggestions:
- Build a fort together
- Pretend to be explorers and go on a bush walk
- Be an active artist: Break out the coloured chalk and play hopscotch and then beautify your driveway or put your stamp on the footpath.
- Be a tourist: Take the kids on a walking/cycling tour of your own childhood. Visit your childhood house, the local park and your favourite places to hang out.

NAIDOC & Education Week Art Project
Thank you to everyone who participated in our whole school art project. We hope you have had a chance to look at the different contributions made by the students.
Students combined the practical art of weaving with the environmental issues of recycling and sustainability. Our aim was to create an art installation that demonstrated the collaborative effort that weaving can be, with the environmental aspect of encouraging students to consider rubbish and what happens to it when it no longer has a purpose.
Each class or grade was permitted to interpret the task and guide their own process, so for this reason you will notice that the artworks are all very different. Please take a walk by the library. We hope it promotes some discussion in your family regarding how we can avoid using these non-recyclable items.
