Principal’s Report

Bear Pit finalists - Congratulations

Congratulations Bodhi Hanson (year 6) and Pipi Te Pania (year 4) who were the overall winners of the Bear Pit public speaking competition. These 2 students will go on to represent Manly Vale Public School at Parliament House on Monday 27 August.

Tomorrow the Kindergarten to Year 2 finals will be on in the school hall starting at 9.30am.

NAIDOC Weaving - ‘Because of her, we can”

As part of our recognition of NAIDOC week this year we wanted to recognise the role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women played within the Aboriginal communities in Australia. As weaving was a traditional role of Aboriginal women we used this to inspire a whole school weaving project to be displayed outside our library. As a school we wanted to recognise Indigenous women as mothers, elders, grandmothers, aunties, sisters and daughters. Many have been advocates for change and reconciliation and continue to influence public opinion. Our weaving project is in recognition of their at times invisible and unsung contributions to cultural, political and social survival of Aboriginal people. We combined our weaving artwork with our focus on sustainability this term and used recycled plastics and materials. Please come and see our wonderful display.

Band Solo Nights

This week we have had individual performances from our Junior and Senior Band members at our annual solo night concerts. It is wonderful to see how our musicians have improved and a wonderful opportunity for them to listen to their fellow band members. Thank you to the committee, Ben and Gergely our conductors and to Ms Stacey and Mrs Humphreys for organising these evenings. Any interested parents (of our current year 2 students) who wish to find out information on the school band program should come along to the information night next Tuesday 21 August at 7pm in the school hall.

Good Luck PSSA teams

Tomorrow our junior and senior rugby league, our junior netball and our junior A girls soccer are all in PSSA grand finals. Congratulations to all the teams on their success this season. It is an exciting day for Manly Vale Public School this Friday. The PSSA buses will be leaving school at 11.30am on Friday so please pack your child’s lunch as they will need to eat at recess time. Hats, drink bottles and sun cream will also be required as the children will be down at the park all afternoon. Shin guards (soccer) and mouthguards (rugby league) also need to be worn.

Science Expo at Mackellar - Monday 20 August

Next Monday our year 6 students will walk down to Mackellar Girls Campus to see their science expo. The visit will be covered by the local excursion permission note signed at the beginning of the year. There is no cost for this trip. If it is raining year 6 will not attend.

Congratulations Talia Stedman

Talia Stedman in year 5 will receive the first school banner principal award on Friday 24 August. This award requires the students to have collected 5 Principal awards over their time at Manly Vale Public School. Each Principal award has required the student to have received 5 merit cards. It is a tremendous achievement and it will be a great pleasure to give such a worthy student this award.

“Principal For The Day” - Pipi and Reuben Te Pania

On Friday 24 August Pipi and Reuben Te Pania will be made “Principals for the day”. This was one of the auction items at the P & C trivia night. Pipi and Reuben will address the assembly, visit classrooms and conduct a school tour on that day. I look forward to sharing the day with them.

Lunches

Please remember to pack your child’s lunch daily as we are having a lot of children coming to the office without lunch. You are able to order online using the Flexischools link below.

Soccer Semis – Ms Cash’s Junior and Senior Boys

Last Friday my junior and senior boys’ soccer teams both played semi finals for the PSSA Friday competition.

The juniors drew 0-0 against Balgowlah North and although they did not go through to the grand final (as they were positioned below Balgowlah North on the ladder) they certainly were the team with the biggest heart and fight on the day!! It was awesome to see them give their all after a fantastic season, losing only 1 game!! Watch this space for next year juniors!

The seniors played a very even match against Curl Curl North and unfortunately lost 0-1 and didn’t progress to the grand final. It was a pleasure to coach this team - some of these boys for 4 years - and experience the camaraderie and skill level that they achieved during this time. My special congratulations to Levi and Charlie for their amazing leadership of the team during the season.

Thanks to all the parents for their encouragement and support on the sidelines and at home.

Yours in sport!

Lisa Cash

Science Excursion

Wellbeing & Welfare Support

CHILDREN & ANXIETY - ‘The Brave Program’

The BRAVE program is an online self-help program that contains both resources and information for children, teenagers and their parents. It is designed specifically to help young people with anxiety overcome their worries and improve the quality of their lives.

For children aged 8-12 years, there are 2 programs, one for children and one for parents. Any child who worries about things will find the program useful. Any parent wanting to learn more about how to help their child overcome worries can also do the program. You can do the program on your own, or together. You can work through at your own speed in the privacy of your own home. This program is for participants to complete by themselves and is not checked by anybody.

No matter how old or young you are, everyone experiences anxiety at times. Worrying about things all the time is tough. The BRAVE program was developed to help young people and their parents develop skills and coping strategies so that your worries and anxiety don’t stop young people from doing the things you want or need to do.
