Principal’s Report
Last Tuesday our school choir performed as part of the Arts Alive Choral concert at Sydney Town Hall. It was a very big day for all our performers with final rehearsals that day and then the concert that night. It was an absolute privilege to be in the audience and watch such an outstanding concert. Our school choir was singing along with 18 other choirs. We all agreed it was memorable event for our choir and for all the parents that were there. Mrs Karen Lucey and Ms Rebekah Mason did an amazing job in preparing our choir for the event and being a part of the concert on the night. It made me so proud to see our students and teacher singing alongside each other. Ms Mason also tutors the Arts Alive Combined choirs in soprano, and it was tremendous to hear them perform. She was also one of the comperes for the night. Congratulations to all who were a part of this spectacular event.
Drama Group - Arts Alive Drama Festival
Congratulations to our drama group for their performance last week at the Arts Alive Drama festival. They performed like professional actors on the night and were a credit to Ms Kemp for their ability to keep the performance going through some audience interruptions. Great job drama group!
Open Day - Today’s School – Creating Tomorrow’s Future
Yesterday was our annual Open Day to celebrate Education Week. Thank you to all the parents and community members that came to see our various performances, open classroom displays and purchase at the Book Fair. The Book Fair will finish Friday 8.15-9.00am. It was lovely to have the opportunity to show off all the wonderful programs we are running at Manly Vale and see all the student’s work and classrooms.
Congratulations - Joseph Wright
Last week I published the wrong name in the newsletter. My apologies. Joseph Wright is to be congratulated for receiving an offer to Gosford High Selective School. Well done Joseph!
Library Monitors
Thank you to all the students who have volunteered to be Library monitors during the second semester. You will receive your badge at tomorrow’s assembly at 9.00am in recognition of service to your school.
Australian Museum
Today our year 3 & 4 students went off to visit the Australian Museum to consolidate work they are currently doing in the science program. These excursions are a great opportunity to engage in hands on learning. Thank you to Mrs Banham our science teacher for organising this opportunity for our students.
Parent Workshop - Friday 10 August 2.00pm
Over the next few weeks Mrs Carol Speight will be delivering parent information workshops on various topics in our school computer room. The first one is tomorrow Friday 10 August at 2.00pm. Everyone is welcome to come to the workshops and ask questions and learn about various topics including curriculum, changed teaching practices, technology, and also ask questions about school planning and directions. Please register at the front office for these workshops this week but in the future there will be an online registration. This week’s topic is curriculum.
On Your Soap Box Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to all our students who wrote and delivered a speech as part of our whole school public speaking competition. Next week we will hear from our finalists with winners going on to speak at Parliament House in the Bear Pit Public speaking competition.
The New School
Apologies for anyone who was affected by the concrete pour yesterday on the work site. The new school seems to be going up very quickly and the hall is to be delivered by the start of term 4. The current before and after school care will move into the new hall at the end of this term and the old hall is to be demolished over the next school holidays. Our current Project Reference Groups (PRG) is to be replaced by a commissioning meeting to talk through the final details of the new buildings. Thank you to Ian Hills, Stephen Hancock, Stewart Davies and Miranda Markecic who have been the parent representations on the PRG. It has been a long journey and is great to see the fruition of the plans. Next Monday 13 August we will have a School Council meeting to discuss updates to the construction.
PSSA Semi-Finals
Congratulations to all our winter PSSA teams on a tremendous season this year. We have 7 teams in the semi-finals tomorrow which is our best achievement in a few years. Thank you to our dedicated coaches Nicole Blackband, Ellie Martin (Girls soccer), Lisa Cash, Emily Sussanna (Boys soccer), Sarah Humphreys, Kristen Te Pania (Netball), and Mel Ward (Rugby League).
Good luck to all our teams tomorrow.

K-2 Assistant Principal’s Report
Developing independent, resilient students within a safe and supportive learning environment.
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are so proud of all our K-2 students for their outstanding behaviour at last week’s Athletics Carnival. Students and staff had a wonderful day and it was wonderful to see so many families there to support their child/children on the day.
A little reminder…
This semester I will be running some Parent Information Forums. These forums aim to:
- Inform participants of policies, curriculum and programs that guide and support their child’s education
- Empower parents and carers with strategies to support their child at home
- Enable participants to become informed leaders within their school
community
and… - Open the lines of communication and welcome you as a significant contributor in your child’s learning journey at Manly Vale Public School.
Each Parent Information Forum will be offered twice, one session within school hours and the other session outside of school hours. The first forum is being offered to Kindergarten parents. It will focus on NSW primary syllabus documents and Kindergarten outcomes. The two sessions available for this forum are:
- Friday 10 August from 2.00pm to 3.00pm
- Wednesday 15 August from 3:30pm to 4:30pm
Kindergarten parents can register for either of these forums at the school’s front office. There will be a maximum of 30 places available at each session. Thank you.
Gains in learning are most prominent when the school community work together to create a supportive learning environment both at home and school. Our parent information forums aim to strengthen parent-teacher relations in order to foster positive parental engagement that will help to improve student academic achievement, wellbeing and productivity.

2018 Athletics Carnival
What a wonderful Athletics Carnival Manly Vale Public School had last Thursday, 2 August. The temperature was a little cool to begin with, but perfect conditions for a running event. It was so great to see all of our students getting so involved and creating a fun and exciting atmosphere. The friendly, competitive banter between houses was motivating and encouraging to those who participated. The reports back from teachers in the crowd were amazing. There was not a scrap of rubbish left behind and very little trace of us being there at all. There were cheers galore from the houses which is a testament to the supportive and inspiring House Captains and House Vice Captains. Thank you for being incredible leaders. It is so fantastic that even though our little school is growing and is not so ‘little’ anymore, we can still encompass the true Manly Vale community spirit. Well done everyone!
Another huge thank you must go out to the absolutely fabulous and wonderful parents who helped out on the day. Whether it was judging, time keeping, cheering on, helping with the mini-canteen or just supporting your child, the carnival really could not have happened with the grand success that it had without you all. We are so lucky to have such caring and involved parents at our school. A special mention to Dahni Sollberger, Leonie Scholtens, Kirsten Watson, Tiffany Scoon, Mel Lovell and Mel Bradley. Without such dedicated parents to help out, it just simply wouldn’t have happened so smoothly and efficiently. Thank you!
One last thank you goes to the spectacular teachers at Manly Vale Public School for their support and hard work leading up to and on the day. Your constant professionalism and positive team work is so wonderful to be a part of. Nothing is too hard or too inconvenient and the effort is hugely appreciated.
Attached are the results for the TRACK events only. Congratulations to two of our students, Lucy Scholtens (Senior 800m Run) and Charlie Kanu (Senior 200m Dash) who broke records in their aforementioned events. A huge achievement, well done! When field events have been completed the results will be placed in the Bush Telegraph.
Ribbons will be handed out when all Athletics Carnival events (track and field) have been completed. A notice will be placed in the Bush Telegraph to let parents know when this will take place. Field events will take place over the next few weeks. Please remind your children to listen out for announcements throughout the week of when each event will be held. They will generally be told the day before. The announcement of the winning house will take place at the end of year Celebration of Learning Assembly.
The Zone Athletics Carnival will take place on Wednesday 29 August (field events and heats for the 800m) and Thursday 30 August (800m final and all remaining track events). A permission note will be sent out shortly to those students who made it through. Please note that only the first 2 places for the 800m and 200m events and the first 3 places for the 100m event go through to Zone.
Thanks again - Athletics Carnival Coordinators

Canteen News
Waste Free Wednesday
Our new lunch service us up and running. Check out the menu on Flexischools. Don’t forget to send in a container (with your child’s name on) if they are having a hot meal. The canteen will supply a reusable (plastic) fork for meals which can be returned to the canteen. A donation of reusable forks from the community would be appreciated.
Sustainability
We are always looking at ways to reduce our impact on the environment in the canteen. So far this year we have switched from plastic cutlery to compostable wooden items (sourced from sustainable forests), stopped using straws for canteen made drinks, introduced reusable cups for smoothies, hot chocolate and cold milk, stopped serving single portions of soy sauce and tomato sauce, started recycling all soft plastic and all containers used as well as paper and cardboard and passing veggie scraps on to members of the community to feed to their pets. We are hoping to move to fully compostable food containers next term and plan to become even more environmentally friendly in 2019.
