Principal’s Report

Welcome back to all parents, students and staff for Term 3. We finished last term with an assembly and morning tea to farewell and thank Sarah Langley our former canteen supervisor. Sarah enjoyed catching up with the students past and present, as well as staff and parents. Thank you to the staff who provided a beautiful morning tea in appreciation of all that Sarah had done for the school.

Peer support Leadership Day

On the last Friday of term all students from K-6 went down to David Thomas to take part in a sport and physical activity morning organised by our School Leaders. Our Year 6 leaders ran a variety of activities including races, parachute games, obstacle courses. Every student was organised into a multi-age group where they had the opportunity to get to know other students in the school. It was a great success and was a great way to introduce our new iPlay initiatives for Term 3. Thank you Mrs Blackband and our Year 6 leaders for all their work on the day.

Staff Development Day – Monday 23 July

Last Monday all of the staff joined the other 13 schools in the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance (NBLA) to listen to two excellent speakers Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and Dr Kristy Goodwin. Dr Michael Carr-Gregg spoke on personal life skills that make a difference and how to look after yourself. The growing demands of the teaching profession has meant that teaching is now ranked number 1 for occupational stress ahead of nursing, air traffic controllers and paramedics. All the 440 teachers in the NBLA appreciated the day to work on skills that will benefit them to maintain a healthy lifestyle so as to perform their very important job in a positive way. The staff at Manly Vale Public School do an amazing job and under very difficult conditions at times and it as a real chance to reflect and put in strategies to support each other.

Dr Kristy Goodwin spoke on teaching the iGen and the growing concerns and evidence-based research around the use of technology with children. She spoke on appropriate use of iPads, iPhones and other forms of technology and the importance of having “green time” (outside activities) for our students. Dr Goodwin is an amazing speaker and publisher of the book “Raising Your Child in Digital World.” Every parent should attend one of her sessions. Her next parent session is at Beacon Hill Public School on September 20 from 7pm-9pm. Follow the link below or see the attached flyer (in Community Notices) for information.

Thank you primaryOSHCare

During the holidays a lot of work was done on the site. Our holiday program run by primaryOSHCare had to be flexible and accommodating to all the changes in the environment during this time. I would like to thank Romina, Alistair and their staff for their flexibility and positivity during this period and thank them from the whole community for providing such a valuable service to our school.

New School

During the holidays a lot or work was done on the site. The services were run through the existing school up to the new classrooms and the foundations of our new school hall were laid in preparation for a September hand over. Although the school was in such a mess the construction company successfully handed back our school to us this week ready for a busy term. Currently the access to the administration office is behind the tech/computer room but we should have the front bridge built and the pit covered next week after the inspections this week.

The K-2 students have a new sandpit, as do the 3-6 students built by Lahey our construction company. There will be some playground changes again this term.

Miss Phillips- Macquarie Park

Miss Phillips has been asked to stay on at Macquarie Park Regional office for the remainder of the year to continue her work as a Teacher Quality Advisor and assist with the implementation of learning progressions to all schools in the Northern Sydney Region. Mrs Clair O’Connor replaces her during this time. We wish Miss Phillips all the best in her new role and look forward to her return next year. Mrs Sarah Humphreys will be relieving as Assistant Principal during this time.

Mrs Katrina Kemp

We were sorry to hear that Mrs Kemp broke her ankle whilst travelling overseas these holidays. She is having this week off to put her leg up with the intent to return to 1K/T next week. Whilst on leave, Mrs Agata Tams has been replacing her on 1K/T.

Thank you Humphreys Newsagency

Humphreys Newsagency presented the school with a cheque for $1456.71 as a donation from the school stationery pack purchases at the beginning of the year. These funds will be used for art and craft supplies for the remainder of the year.

Band Camp this weekend

This weekend we will have our annual Band Camp at Camp Kedron, Ingleside. The camp runs from Friday to Sunday and is a highlight for our band members. Ms Stacey, Mrs Humphreys and myself (Mrs Lee) will be staying over at camp along with some parent volunteers. This camp is a great way for the children to practice their instruments and receive one to one tutoring and whole band practice continually over 2 days. The camp concludes with a concert on the Sunday where parents are always amazed at the improvements gained during the camp.

Bear Pit Public Speaking- term 3

This term we have our Bear Pit Public Speaking competition. All students from Kindergarten to year 6 are expected to write and present a speech on topics provided. This program is part of the whole school curriculum. Class finalists will compete in a grade/stage final towards the end of term.

Next week our years 3-6 students will complete the ICAS English competition during class time.

Opportunity Class test - Wednesday 1 August

The OC test for year 4 students trying to seek a placement in the Opportunity Class at Balgowlah Heights Public School, Mona Vale Public School or Neutral Bay Public School is next Wednesday. Good luck to all our students for the test that day.

Drama Group - Arts North Festival

Good luck to our school drama group as they perform at the Chatswood Concourse next Wednesday 1 August. The group auditioned and was selected to perform as part of the Arts North Festival. Thank you to Ms Jaala Kemp for all her work in preparing our students for this event. “Break a leg” as they say in the drama world!

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition

During the last week of Term 2, Pipi Te Pania, Kira Arkhipova, Talia Stedman and Ophelia Shapter represented Manly Vale Public School at the local finals for the ‘Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition’ where they delivered a prepared and an impromptu speech. They were all so passionate, enthusiastic and confident about their topics. While the girls didn’t progress to the next round of the competition, they came away with a valuable experience and feedback for future speeches. I congratulate all of them for the amount of effort and dedication each and every one of them put in to prepare, practice and deliver their speeches.
