Principal’s Report
Kindergarten 2019 Open Day
Last Monday 18 June we had our Open Day for our new enrolments and for children starting school in 2019. Our School Leaders ran school tours and showed the new families around the school, highlighting the changes that have occurred and will be occurring with the construction of the new school. Thank you to our school choir, dance groups, drama group and senior band that entertained our visitors. Our new families were very impressed with the performances. We now have 67 children on the database already for 2019. All new enrolments should now complete an enrolment from and hand it to the office. Our first Orientation morning is on Tuesday 11 September.
Trivia Night
Last Saturday night was a fantastic night for the community. All parents and teachers reported that it was a wonderful evening and everyone enjoyed the trivia, games, auction and entertainment from the parent band. Thank you to Penny Dixon for coordinating the evening and for everyone who helped out including:
- Maura, Naida, Tracy and all of the mums who made up the hampers and decorated the hall.
- Kristen Te Pania for all the communication with the Class Co-ordinators.
- Bespoke Social (Amelia Johnson) for the styling and decorating.
- The band “Wounded Bear” (including Ben Goh and Andy Corner).
- Mackellar Girls Campus for the use of the hall.
- MVPS staff for assisting with gathering hamper items.
- The talented staff who rocked the crowd (a few times over!)
- The parent community for buying tickets, making donations as they couldn’t attend, jumping in with setting up and tidying up.
- The school and local business community for all their support
The final total raised was $13,000. This money will go towards a new data projector and automated screen for the new school hall. Congratulations to every child who received a homework week-free voucher and to the parents who have secured front row seats to the dance concert. We also look forward to Pipi and Reuben Te Pania who will be ‘Principals for the Day” in the next few weeks.

Science Literacy trial
Yesterday some of our year 6 students participated in NAPLAN Science literacy trial. This trial is in preparation for online NAPLAN testing in the future.
Choir Performance and rehearsal
Our school choir is preparing for their performance at the Sydney Town Hall as part of the Arts Alive Combined School choir. Today the choir travelled to Kuringai High for a rehearsal and will return to school just after 3.00pm. It is a great privilege to perform as part of this combined choir. Thank you to Ms Rebekah Mason and Mrs Karen Lucey for their work with the choir this year and to all the children who regularly attend lunchtime rehearsals.
Regional Cross Country
Good luck Pipi Te Pania and Lucy Scholtens tomorrow at the Regional Cross Country carnival at Gosford. Pipi and Lucy represent the Manly zone team in this very competitive event.
Dance Groups
Good luck to our school dance groups next week as they perform at the Glen Street Theatre. The girls’ ensemble will perform “Find the African Beat” and the boys’ Hip Hop group will perform “Euphoria”. Thank you to Ms Panetta and Ms Durazza who have been busy organising costumes, buses and rehearsals for our dance groups and who will accompany them next week to all their performances. Both work very hard to give our students this wonderful opportunity.
Congratulations and well done Dakota Birch!
Congratulations to Dakota Birch who will perform in the Sydney North Dance Ensemble as well as our school ensemble next week at Glen Street Theatre. Dakota was also selected in the State Dance Ensemble and participated in the Ballet Workshops at the Sydney Theatre Company on 18 June. Dakota as our school captain has had to juggle a lot of extra commitments this week and we are so very proud of the way she represents our school in everything she does.
Congratulations Junior & Senior Band
Congratulations to our Junior & Senior Band on their performances at the Northern Sydney Instrumental Festival last Wednesday. Both bands received a silver plaque which is displayed in the front office.

New School Construction Update
Next week there will be some major concrete pours done on 25 June, 27 June and 4 July. There will be alot of cement trucks around those days so try to avoid the area as much as possible.
During the school holidays beginning 9 July there will be works on the site however the holiday OOSH program will be operational for the entire holidays. Lahey constructions is also hoping to handover the new school hall in the September holidays (2018) and the classrooms in February 2019. The demolishing and removal of the current classrooms is due to be in the Christmas holidays at the end of the year.
Chess Club - Friday 22 June 2018
Our final games for the season will be this Friday at home in 6L classroom. Many thanks to all the players below for their participation and representing our school in this Friday afternoon competition. A big thank you to Emmeline Stevens who has had to coordinate and organise the boys in Mr Bennett’s absence and to Mr Dylan for his assistance in adjudicating and judging the home matches. Final results will be published in next week’s newsletter.

IPLay - New Program
Last Tuesday afternoon the teaching staff all participated in some professional learning in teaching sport, fundamental movement skills and mini games as part of the IPLAY initiative. The 2 hour in-service will be the start of a whole school commitment to promoting positive attitudes to physical activity and embedding physical activity into all areas of the school curriculum and timetable.
IPLAY training involves online modules and teacher training and mentoring. Mrs Ward, Mrs BLackband, Ms Sussanna and Mr Chapman will be trained as leaders in the program. Students at Manly Vale will participate in some fun lesson breaks and energizers, skill development and the use of physical activity to assist in brain growth, concentration and focus. IPLAY is research based and has proven results in improved student’s wellbeing and academic performance. Students at Manly Vale Public School will also receive physical homework activities to consolidate skill development.
Farewell Sarah Langley
On the last day of school Friday 6 July we will have the opportunity as a community to farewell Sarah Langley (Canteen Supervisor). Sarah retired from the canteen at the end of last year but due to family reasons was unable to have an official retirement farewell until now.
We would like to invite parents and students, past and present to Café Owl On Friday 6 July from 8.00am to say goodbye to our dear friend Sarah. Café Owl will be followed by an official assembly and then morning tea. The proceedings will be finished by about 10.30am. Mrs Lynn O’Grady will also be there celebrating her official retirement from teaching.

Developing independent, resilient students within a safe learning environment
Winter Woolies and Classroom Access
Dear Parents and Carers,
The chill factor is definitely upon us, which means we often experience a high rate of sickness around this time. Please ensure your child wears appropriate winter uniform items to school to ensure we keep colds and flus at bay.
I am sure you will appreciate how quickly sickness can spread in a school environment. We have had a number of students attending school without appropriate cold and wet weather gear and/or coming to school with cold and flu symptoms. We ask that you ensure your child is well rugged up during this ‘chilly’ season and if they are unwell, please keep them at home so they are able to rest, recuperate and get lots of snuggly cuddles!
Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 teachers have also reported that there has been an increase in the number of students and parents entering classrooms before school whilst they are unattended. Please be mindful that no student or parent should be entering a classroom without a teacher present. Teachers often have personal items and confidential paper work located in their rooms. We thank you for your anticipated cooperation with this request.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Carol Speight

Debating
This semester our debaters have been working very hard during lunch breaks on developing their debating skills. They have been learning to form arguments and rebuttals, write definitions and practise public speaking presentation skills. They finally got to test out their new skills last Friday when our Premier’s Debating Challenge Team hosted a debate against Balgowlah North Public School. Ophelia, Talia, Dakota and Ebrika prepared a strong case for the topic that, ‘We should never allow people under 18 to use social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.’
Both Miss Martin and I were very impressed with both teams presenting mature arguments and clever rebuttals. They debated with conviction and passion. As a result, our team has won their first debate!
Manly Vale Public School is very proud of their efforts and wishes them further success with their next three debates for the competition.
