Principal’s Report

Last Friday morning we had the finals of the Multicultural Speaking competition. All the speakers were outstanding on the day with congratulations to Talia Stedman and Ophelia Shapter (Stage 3 representatives) and Pipi Te Pania and Kira Arkhipova (Stage 2 representatives), who all go on to compete at the next level against local schools at Collaroy Public School on Wednesday 4 July. Good luck to these students.

Miss Phillips

Last Friday Miss Phillips was promoted to a Teacher Advisor role within the Department of Education Regional Office at Macquarie Park. She has taken on the role until the end of the term (4 weeks) at this stage. Whilst we all congratulate her on this achievement, 6L were sad to say goodbye at such short notice as was the staff. We wish her all the best and welcome Mrs Sarah Humphreys from 4/5H as the new Assistant Principal for the remainder of the term. Mrs Clair O’Connor (Tuesday and Wednesday) will work with Mrs Lisa Cash (Monday, Thursday, Friday) on 6L for the remainder of the term and we are unsure at this stage whether the job will turn into a permanent position.

Band Performances - Pittwater High

Last night our senior and junior bands performed in front of a packed hall at Pittwater High School in the Northern beaches Instrumental Festival. This festival is an opportunity for our band members to listen to their performance critiqued by expert conductors and band masters.

Congratulations to all the band members in the junior and senior bands and to our wonderful conductors Ben and Gergely for their work with the students. The advice given last night will go towards improving our skills and overall performances in preparation for the rest of the year.

Thank you to Ms Kate Stacey for attending the performance. Mrs Sarah Humphreys will take over the senior band organisation during Miss Phillip’s absence. Band Camp from 27 July – 29 July will be a great follow up to this performance and a time to work intensively on our overall performance and presentation.

K-2 “Storybook” Dance Concert - Front row seats auction!

On Wednesday 4 July we will have our Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 annual dance concert at Allambie School hall. Front row tickets for this concert have been reserved to be auctioned off this Saturday night at the Trivia night. The concert starts promptly at 11.30am and these premium seats will be an added bonus for parents who want to have a clear view of the stage. 12 tickets have been put aside to be used as auction/ prize items on the Trivia night.

Open Day - Monday 18 June 9.30am

Next Monday is our Kindergarten 2019 Open Day. This day is open to all interested parents in the area to come and see the school. Please remind your friends and neighbours in the street of this open day if they are interested in coming to our school next year or in the near future.

There will be performances from our school senior band, choir, drama, girls dance group and boy’s Hip Hop group on the day. Please ensure that your child brings their instrument and costumes for their performances. A short morning tea to welcome our new parents will be offered in the school hall afterwards at 11.00am with Kindergarten closing the morning with the “Fish” song.

ICAS Writing - Thursday 14 June 3.15pm

Today the ICAS writing tests will be conducted by Mrs Lee and Mrs Banham after school. Yesterday the ICAS spelling was done after school with a catch up day for the band students run today. Our next competition will be in lCAS which is the ICAS English competition on Tuesday 31 July (Term 2). Thank you to Mrs Blackband for all her organisation of these competitions.

Trivia Night - Saturday 16 June

This Saturday night is one of our biggest nights for the fundraising committee and P & C. This year we are fundraising for a new data projector and automated screen for our new school hall. Our new school hall will be ready in September and we would like to install a “State of the Art” projector and screen for presentation nights, assemblies and performances. Please give generously on the night.

“Principal For The Day” - Trivia Night auction item

One of the auction items on the Trivia night is for your child to be made “Principal for the Day.” The day begins with breakfast at Café Owl and presentation of a Principal badge at the morning assembly. Morning tea with friends and the executive staff in the principal’s office then classroom visits and handing out of merit awards after recess followed by visits to PSSA sporting events in the afternoon. In the past we have had one child be the principal or it can be shared amongst siblings through scheduled timeslots during the day. If you think your child would enjoy the experience please bid for the item on Saturday night.

Clean Up - Trivia Night

The committee still requires volunteers to assist with clean up on Sunday morning after the Trivia night and perhaps for a few minutes at the end of the night. If you are able to assist with cleaning up on the Sunday morning for ½ hour please contact your Class Coordinator who will pass your details onto Penny Dixon (fundraising coordinator).

It is always a terrific night each year and a big thank you to Penny who has managed to put this event together. Please assist on the night by cleaning up your own table and space so as not to leave a lot of work for the clean - up committee. My apologies that I am unable to make it on the night but the staff table is “fired up and ready” to take on the parents in the trivia competition.

Power Outage - last Tuesday

Last Tuesday one of the power lines came down in the street. We had no power most of the day Tuesday and many Ausgrid trucks and workers all over the street on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Apologies for the trucks in the drop off bays on Wednesday morning but they were from Ausgrid not the building site.

Lunchbox Request

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a couple of incidents where students in K-2 are either not eating their lunch or have been caught throwing it out so they can play. Although teachers have had numerous conversations about this issue with their students, we ask that all parents have a chat with their children to reinforce the importance of eating the healthy lunch provided for them by you.

We have also explained to students that they are not to share their food with other children and that if they do not like what is in their lunch box, that they are to have this conversation with you at home. I am sure you can appreciate that it is impossible for teachers to check all student’s lunch boxes whilst on playground duty, so we truly appreciate your anticipated support with this concern. Thank you.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Carol Speight

NAIDOC Week Art Project

Manly Vale students will be participating in a whole school art project for NAIDOC Week.

The materials we will be using include plastic waste which would normally end up as land fill or find its way into waterways.

Some of these items are listed below.

Items to collect could include any small items such as:

  1. plastic tie tabs from bread packaging.
  2. straws (rinsed)
  3. rubber bands
  4. twist ties
  5. plastic tops from drink/milk bottles (rinsed)
  6. soy sauce fish (rinsed)
  7. plastic mesh from veg and fruit bags (rolled and tied in a knot)
  8. coffee pods (rinsed)

Students will be discussing the project in their classes and will be asked to collect these items at home over the next few weeks and then bring them to school for sorting and creating!

Please help your child to be part of this very worthwhile project.

Start with a container set aside on the kitchen bench every time a plastic item is about to be disposed of in the rubbish rinse the item (if necessary) and put it in the container for collection.

The items will be needed in the first few weeks of term 3.

Thank you for your support

Yes – it’s only 2 more sleeps until the biggest event on the school’s social calendar gets underway and this year we are raising funds to equip our new school hall!

Thank you for getting organised to choose a table ahead of time and buying your tickets. There are still some spots available on tables and full tables available so if you know of friends who think they are too late – it’s not!!! Please check to see that all your mates have bought their tickets!

We’ve had a few questions coming through so thought we’d send a quick update:

  • Doors at Mackellar open 7.00pm. Trivia starts at 7.30pm. The band will be playing, the welcome crew on standby, auction items on display and some time to eye out all the different outfits!

2 – Do I dress to the Black n White theme or do I dress to my table name theme?

  • Either / or.

  • Prizes for best dressed individual, guy, girl, couple, table – as judged by anonymous judges.
  • And leave the high heels at home please!

3 – Money / cash facilities - No ATM on site

  • Bring along as many gold coins and notes as your budget allows!!!
  • Loads of opportunities to enter fun games & challenges to win a prize or extra table points.
  • We will have an EFTPOS terminal available for bigger ticket prize winners so bring the plastic.

4 – BYO and take it all home with you

  • All food and drink is BYO. Whatever takes your fancy – gourmet or party pies.
  • Pack your picnic basket as you’ll need to bring all cups, plates, utensils with you.
  • And what you bring in – you will need to take home with you! Bring a garbage bag and a box for the empties!

5 – What all can I expect on the evening?

  • Awesome community fun
  • Loads of laughs at outfits
  • Cool trivia
  • Great prizes from great community sponsors
  • Silent auction, live auction (principal for the day | front row K-2 dance concert tickets | homework free week) and hampers up for grabs
  • All wrapped up as early as possible to ensure as much music and dancing time as possible – Wounded Bear will be in the house ready to rock the roof

And a huge shout out to all the volunteers who’ve helped in some capacity so far! We couldn’t do this without you!

That’s it crew! Bring it! See you Saturday!
