Principal’s Report
Last Tuesday our school cross country team competed at Curl Curl Lagoon park in the Zone Cross Country carnival. Mr Dylan and Mr Chapman accompanied the squad and reported that all students under difficult conditions competed to the best of their ability on the day. The rain and cold didn’t deter the strong Manly Vale Public School team spirit, support and encouragement of each other. Special mention goes to Lucy Scholtens who came first overall in the 12 years girls’ event and Pipi Te Pania who came in 3rd in the 10 years girls race. Other results are mentioned later in this newsletter. Lucy and Pipi will go on to represent the district in the Sydney North Cross Country carnival at Gosford on Friday 22 June. I’d like to make special mention to Talia Stedman who stopped to help someone who had fallen during her race. Talia certainly demonstrated the “Caring and Sharing” school motto that gives us pride. Well done to the whole team and thank you to Mr Chapman and Mr Dylan for accompanying our team and helping out on the day.

Congratulations Levi Coates-Westerink
Last week Levi Coates-Westerink played with the Sydney North PSSA soccer team at Miranda. The team came 6th overall in the carnival and Levi was selected to be first reserve in the training squad for the NSW State team to play in the School Sports Australian Carnival in September.
Project Penguin - Stage 3
Last week I had the privilege of seeing our stage 3 students work with their Mackellar Girl’s mentors on their design and make projects. Project Penguin is a sustainability project that all our senior students take part in every second year. The idea behind the project is for the students to work collaboratively and come up with promotional ideas to save and preserve the fairy penguin community at Manly Wharf. After listening to the experts from the zoo, and seeking guidance from their high school mentors (Mackellar Girl’s year 10 gifted and talented students) our year 5 & 6 students investigate ways to promote sustainable practices to preserve these penguins. Congratulations to all the students on their wonderful ideas. A Project Penguin expo day is scheduled for Thursday 28 June at Taronga Zoo.

New School
Last week the school staff was invited for a tour of the new school. The teachers were excited at the new open space and collaborative settings for their students. The views and wonderful breezes experienced at the top of the site were magnificent. Some photos of various check- points along the way were captured by Mr Dylan and Mrs Blackband.

NAPLAN online 2018
This year we should receive our NAPLAN result a little earlier than the rest of the state. This is one of the key advantages of doing the NAPLAN testing online. Marking can be done immediately using the software and feedback can be given instantly to students and parents on NAPLAN performance.
Following are some photos taken of the year 3 & 5 students participating online NAPLAN.

New Furniture
We have been trialling the new 21st century furniture in 4/5H classroom. Tables that are covered with whiteboard material allow students to problem solve and work collaboratively on tasks. Wobble stools and stand up tables are a welcome inclusion for students who wish to keep moving, or stretch their legs whilst doing formal writing lessons. The students in 4/5 H have enjoyed trialling the new furniture and the bright colours and the differing options for furniture have us all excited for the changed=s that will occur when we move into our new school.

Multicultural Public Speaking competition - Finals - Friday 8 June
Tomorrow we will see the finalists in the Multicultural Speaking Competition speak in front of the school assembly. This competition is for our gifted public speakers and often requires extensive research and deep understanding of cultural issues and backgrounds. Congratulations to all students who entered this competition and were successful in making the final tomorrow. Winners of the competition will be published next week.
Good luck Rugby League Teams
Tomorrow our school rugby league teams have entered in the PSSA gala day. Mrs Ward will coach the 2 teams as they play local schools in a knockout gala day. Our league teams have been very successful in their PSSA games this season and are to be congratulated on their achievements in only their second season of play. Thank you Mrs Ward for your enthusiasm and encouragement of the league teams.
P & C Meeting - Tuesday 12 June 7.00pm
Next Tuesday we will have our monthly P & C meeting. Please feel free to come along and learn about the school organisation. All parents are welcome. I will be giving updates to the construction process on the night and informing the P & C of changes to the design and traffic provision, relocation of the uniform shop, and timeline to completion.
Spelling and Writing ICAS Competitions
Next week we will be running the ICAS spelling competition on Wednesday afternoon 13 June at 3.15pm straight after school. The Writing ICAS will be administered after school on Thursday 14 June straight after school. Please make sure you pack afternoon tea, a rubber and pencil if your child is sitting these competitions. Please arrange to pick up your children from these competitions at about 4.15pm.
Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival - Wednesday 13 June 2018
Good luck to our senior and junior bands who will be performing at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival at Pittwater High School next Wednesday afternoon/evening. The junior band will perform at 6.45pm and the senior band at 5.00pm. Experienced conductors and musicians will critique both performances, and our bands will benefit from the feedback. Good luck to both bands.

76th Commemoration Service North Head
Last Friday, 1 June, I had the pleasure of attending the 76th Commemorative Service at North Head with our 2018 School Captains and Vice Captains. The Honourable Brendan Nelson AO spoke about being courageous in life and drawing inspiration from the soldiers who defended Sydney Harbour 76 years ago and who continue to ensure our safety today. Our leaders looked outstanding in their school blazers and were complimented by many. The leaders met Mr James Griffin MP and the Honourable Mr Tony Abbott MP who led the service. Although it was cold and windy at North Head our leaders enjoyed being with other primary and high school leaders. The service was a wonderful tribute to soldiers past and present and was important for our leaders to take part in the service.
Band Camp 2018
If you are in the Junior or Senior Band program you should have received a band camp note today. The note outlines details of camp which is being held on 27-29 July at Camp Kedron. The Junior Band members arrive on the morning of 28, Saturday and only stay one night. It would be a great idea to have a few ‘practise’ sleepovers at friend’s houses during the holidays. Please return the permission and medical notes as soon as possible to help with the organisation of the camp. Miss Phillips will be collecting these.

2018 National NAIDOC Theme: Because of her, we can!
NAIDOC Week 2018 will celebrate the invaluable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made – and continue to make - to our communities, our families, our rich history and to our nation. Collecting and weaving are traditional past times of Indigenous women.
Our proposal is to create a whole school art project using collected plastic waste, which will be integrated with weaving materials. Our aim is to create an art installation that demonstrates the collaborative effort that weaving can be, with the environmental aspect of encouraging students to consider rubbish, and what happens to it when it no longer has a purpose.
More details will be sent via email to the class co-ordinators. Start collecting!

Zone Cross Country
Despite all odds we were able to run the Zone Cross Country on Tuesday. Our team of runners gathered at school as the rain poured down but it couldn’t dampen their enthusiasm and excitement. We had heaps of shelter in and around the netball stadium and it wasn’t long before the first race was called.
The 12 years girls took their place on the start line and soon the first race began. It couldn’t have been a better start to the day as the red singlet of Lucy Scholtens emerged from through the rain on the last corner in the lead and ran hard to finish in first place. It was only 3 races later that Pipi Te Pania finished an amazing third in the 10 years girls. Both these girls will now represent the school and Manly Zone at the regional cross country in Gosford later in the term.
Every runner who took part in the carnival did our school proud. They all managed to finish the race running, some wetter than others. Other notable finishers in the top 20 were Ireland Kennedy 10th (11 yrs girls), Mackenzie Jeffs 13th (10 yrs girls), Hayley Ridge 15th (12yrs girls), Adam Tuner 16th (10 yrs boys), Ryan Koorey 18th (11 yrs boys) and Seren Knoyle 20th (10 yrs girls).
Thank you to all the students who behaved sensibly, ran their hardest and displayed a sense of enjoyment in the less than ideal conditions. This was certainly a Zone Cross Country I will never forget.

Project Penguin
Stage 3 have been busy innovating and creating projects to help protect and raise awareness about the critically endangered colony of little penguins at Manly Wharf. Our stage 3 students were very excited to work with their mentors from Mackellar Girls Campus, who provided much assistance and guidance over the past two project days. We are very impressed with the level of enthusiasm and effort that our stage 3 students have demonstrated during the planning and creating phases of the projects. Some projects include, but are not limited to: interactive games, websites, dioramas and ideal habitats. Stage 3 should be commended for the teamwork, innovation and problem-solving that has been on display during the creation of the projects. We are very much looking forward to seeing the final products!

Project Penguin
Did you know that there are little penguins down at Manly Wharf? You most likely hadn’t, as only 1 breeding pair is left under the wharf. The Taronga Zoo Wildlife Centre is working to help these penguins by caring for the injured penguins. Over 35 little penguins can be brought in to the Taronga Wildlife Centre each year. And we’ve already got 25, just halfway through the year. As well as this the majority of our fairy penguins brought into care have been from injuries with plastics.
You can help Manly’s Fairy Penguins in so many different ways and these can be done at almost any time. Nearly everyone can easily walk down to the beaches along Sydney Harbour and pick up some rubbish among them. Now you may think these beaches are clean… They AREN’T. These beaches can have hundreds of plastics, cigarette butts, metal utensils, coffee cups and that is just a dent of what you can find on Sydney’s beaches.
But maybe you already have cut low on plastic materials and already clean up Manly’s beaches very often. Well we have good news for you. You can still help our Fairy Penguins by cleaning out areas of one overpowering fern that lies in the depths of Sydney Harbour’s Wildlife Parks.
The Asparagus Fern is a spiky weed spreading like wildfire through the bush. It can grow so quickly that it can take up huge areas of penguin land, leaving them unable to burrow.
But even this fern can be easily tackled by you. Many people who visit bushland often can go through the scrub and pull out the asparagus fern from the ground. But first you must remove the grey water sacks from its roots, which it can survive on for months while it slowly regrows.
Many students in a diverse range of schools along the Northern Beaches are on a mission to save the little penguins down at Manly. Students have been cleaning out bags of Asparagus Fern as well as entire trash cans of rubbish of our beaches. All to save these little penguins down at Manly. By the way, they are the only penguins living in NSW.
So, now you know how you can help. What are you waiting for?

K-2 Author Visit
On Monday 21 May, we were very lucky to have author, Yves Stening, visit our school to read his new book, A Tangled Tale Of Tagliatelle. Students in years K-2 thoroughly enjoyed his visit and learnt about the process of writing and illustrating a children’s book. Many were surprised to discover that his first book A Fearsome Beast and a Dumpling Feast took two whole years to come to life! Yves definitely peaked an interest in many budding authors in K-2 and gave everyone a great insight into the creative process of an author.
For students who would like to purchase a copy, Yves can sign the books and mail them to you. All Manly Vale Public School students receive a 10% Discount.
To purchase please visit the link below
- Use Promo Code: MANLYVALE for 10% discount.
- Make sure you include your child’s name in the “shipping” details if you would like Yves to sign the book to him or her.
- Books mailed within 2-3 Days
Happy Reading!
