Principal’s Report
This week we have had our Band workshop mornings. These workshops have allowed all our musicians to have extensive tuition in their instruments and that extra time to work with the whole band. Than you to Ben Dickson our conductor for his organisation of the tutors and workshops and Miss Phillips and Ms Stacey for their school based organisation.
Simultaneous Story Time
Last Monday Mrs Poole organised our annual simultaneous story time morning. The K-2 teachers participated in reading and role playing the story “Hickory Dickory Dash” Our K-2 students thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our years 3-6 students also enjoyed watching the story simultaneously on Youtube. Thank you to Mrs Poole who organised the event. It is wonderful to have such an enthusiastic librarian who brings these stories to life for the children.
Project Penguin Day
Today our stage 3 worked with their high school mentors to complete their sustainability projects. These workshop days are a great opportunity for our stage 3 students to talk about the expectations of high school with their buddies and participate in collaborative design and make activities.
Defence of Sydney Monument Visit
Tomorrow our year 6 leaders accompanied by Miss Phillips will attend the Defence of Sydney service at North Head. The leaders will lay a wreath at the monument and represent the school at this special service, acknowledging the 76th anniversary of the night Sydney was under attack in the Second World War.
Drama Audition - Wednesday 6 June
Good luck to our school drama group next Wednesday as they audition for the Sydney North Drama Festival. Our group will be performing, “Why oh why did she swallow the fly?” This skit was written and directed by Ms Jaala Kemp. Our drama group consists of Morgan Andrews, Matilda Graham, Mia Lougher, Will Curzon, Trisha Khapung, Phoebe Crowe, Grace Green and Pipi Te Pania.
District Cross Country - Tuesday 5 June
Next Tuesday 40 of our students will participate in the cross country carnival at Curl Curl park. We wish them the best of luck for the day. Every student should be proud of their efforts in making the school team for this event. Mr Dylan and Mr Chapman will accompany the students on the day.
Congratulations Kalinda Northcott
One of our year 2 students Kalinda Northcott is a finalist for the 2018 Moran Contemporary Photographic competition. She has won a digital camera for her photograph of her brother fishing. Such an achievement for a year 2 student. Congratulations Kalinda! The finalists photos can be viewed by following the link below:

Pygmy Possum
Last week Dan Pedersen (Ecologist) sent the photos below to show the survival of the pygmy possum during the construction. Dan has been working with the Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee to provide possum boxes and food for this rare species. These photos were taken by the time lapse camera located in the surrounding bushland.

Band Workshops & Tutorials
This week our Junior Band and Senior Band students participated in band workshops and tutorials. Specialised tutors worked with the students in small groups to practise particular music pieces and their instruments. These workshops are extremely valuable for the improvement of our band students’ musicality. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and opportunity to work with an expert of their instrument. Band Camp is scheduled for 27-29 July and we are looking forward to more intense learning and playing together. Thank you to Ben for organising the workshops and tutors to attend. Thank you both Ben and Gergely for your leadership as our conductors of the bands.

Project Penguin
Last Wednesday all stage 3 students spent the day at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo as part of Project Penguin. This excursion allowed all students to ask questions to volunteer expert Sue, Environmental Centre expert Judy and the zoo keepers. The students engaged in a 60 minute Q&A session and asked thought provoking questions to gather information about the fairy penguins living in Manly and about penguins in general. Stage 3 were taken on a tour of the sea animals at Taronga Zoo and completed journal work on their observations and information gathered. The head penguin zoo keeper spoke to our students about their important role in educating the community about the plight of the fairy penguins of Manly. Our students loved seeing the penguins swimming overhead and playing in their enclosure. The students had a 60 minute session to share their project ideas with the zoo keepers and modify their plans after thorough consultation and discussion. It was a fabulous day of learning and being inspired and our students left feeling excited to meet their high school mentors and start their projects.

Student Assessment
Dear Parents and Carers,
I have had the pleasure of relieving all K-2 teachers during a middle session (recess through to lunch) so they can administer individual reading and mathematics assessments for reporting purposes. I am pleased to say that each class I have visited over the last three weeks have been well behaved, respectful, and have produced quality work.
Assessment is the broad name for the collection and evaluation of evidence of students’ learning. It is an essential component of the teaching and learning cycle. Assessment can enhance student engagement and motivation, particularly when it incorporates interaction with teachers and other students. Assessment tasks are regularly embedded in all stage programs K-6. The collection of ongoing, authentic assessment data ensures teachers are constantly differentiating learning to meet the needs of all students in their class.
Assessment…
- provides opportunities for teachers to gather evidence about student achievement in relation to outcomes
- enables students to demonstrate what they know and can do
- clarifies student understanding of concepts and promotes deeper understanding
- provides evidence that current understanding is a suitable basis for future learning.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Carol Speight

Simultaneous Story Time
Manly Vale celebrated Simultaneous Story Time by sharing the book Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.
All the K-2 teachers performed a reader's theatre version of the story with star performances by Miss Sussanna, Miss Stacey, Miss Pembroke and Miss Durazza as the characters. They were supported by the narrators Mrs Lucey, Mrs Kemp, Mrs Gibson, Mrs Poole and Miss Buckley, with Miss Taylor and Miss Mason as the onomatopoeia performers.
At the same time many students in 3-6 classes watched a reading of Hickory Dickory Dash on YouTube.
The concept of sharing a selected book title is to unite schools, public libraries and preschools in a love of literature, reading and the joy of creative expression.

PSSA Lunch Orders
A big thank you to everyone who has added the *PSSA alert to their lunch orders, it helps us enormously as Fridays are always very busy in the canteen. However, last Friday, there were still quite a few children asking for early lunches who didn’t have their orders marked with *PSSA and that was pretty stressful for them and for us, so please double check, for this week, that you have set the *PSSA alert if needed.
New Winter Menu
We are thrilled with the response to our new Winter menu and we hope your children are enjoying their meals. Did you know that everything is homemade in the canteen now including the bolognaise, the butter chicken, the burgers and even the sausage rolls on Fridays. Sshhh don’t tell the kids – there are also lots of veggies hidden in every meal.
