Principal’s Report

This week all teachers have been hosting the first week of their parent/teacher interviews. Thank you to every parent who has made the time to meet with your child’s class teacher. These interviews are very important as it allows teachers to get to know your concerns but also set some academic/social goals for the year. If you have been unable to make an appointment with your teacher please email or call the school to schedule a time for next term.

Leadership day- Thursday 5 April

Thank you to our school leaders Kyan McDougall, Dakota Birch, Carter Sengchanh, Sarah Hills, Charlie Kanu, Tobias Twidale, Lucy Scholtens and Cleo Lovell who attended a leadership workshop day today with Miss Phillips at Brookvale Public School. Our School Leadership team used the day to workshop a whole school project led through our SRC. The project details will be delivered next term. These enthusiastic students demonstrated their abilities to work together and come up with ways they as students can lead programs within the school. We look forward to their plans and directions for the SRC this year.

SRC- Friday 6 April

Tomorrow the guest classes 1KT, 2GC, 3B and 5W will present their suggestions to the Student Representative Council. The SRC representatives will outline the requests from each of their classes and the students will vote on whether suggestions are carried or not during the meeting. This introduction to democracy is a valuable learning experience for our School Leaders and SRC representatives. Thank you to Miss Phillips for her all her work with the school leadership team. Parents are welcome to watch the meeting in the hall at 11.30am but may not vote or contribute to the meeting.

Welcome Aleesah Darlison

Tomorrow Friday 6 April we will host Aleesah Darlison a local children’s author at our school. Aleesah will talk to all years 3 and 5 students about creative writing through the narrative text in preparation for NAPLAN next term. Thank you to Mrs Blackband for organising this visit for our students.

Winter PSSA trials- Friday 6 April

Tomorrow will be the last day of the try outs for winter PSSA. Please send your child along with their hat, sun cream and protective gear (shin pads, mouthguards etc.) in preparation for the trials. Friday 13 April (last day of term) will be a training session for all teams. PSSA permission notes will be given out next week. Please ensure that PSSA fees are paid in advance of the first game next term. If you are unable to pay the PSSA fees there is a no cost school sport alternative.

Next week organisation

Next week I will be away for the week. Miss Phillips will be the relieving principal for the week and all enquires will need to be directed to her as from Monday 9 April. May I take this opportunity to wish you a safe and happy holiday.

The P & C meeting scheduled for next week will be postponed to Tuesday 8 May at 7.00pm in the staffroom.

School Fees

Thank you to all the parents who have paid for their 2018 school fees. All families who have paid their full amount of fees for the year will go into a raffle to be drawn next week Friday 13 April for a family movie pass.

NAPLAN – years 3 and 5

This year Manly Vale Public School has been selected to run the NAPLAN test online. The NAPLAN tests begin on Tuesday 15 May through to Friday 25 May. All classes from years 3 and 5 will be scheduled to complete the reading, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), and numeracy tests over the 9 day period. As the tests will be conducted online the timetable for tests may vary according to availability of laptops. A detailed timetable will be sent out next term. The writing component of the year 3 test schedule will be done using pen and paper, however, the year 5 students will be typing their writing onto a word document. Typing practice over the holiday period for year 5 students would be beneficial.

Students who miss a test due to illness can be caught up during the 9 day period with the final cut- off date being Friday 25 May. Some practice test papers can be found by following the link below:

CARES Bicycle Education

This week the stage 3 students have all attended CARES where they learnt about bicycle road safety. We were fortunate to have two senior constables teach about the laws associated with riding a bike and the safety precautions necessary for safe riding. Year 5 & 6 students were taught how to check their helmet fits correctly, complies with Australian standards and the importance of wearing a helmet when riding their bike. The students learnt about road safety laws and rules and rode around the mini-roads track to practise obeying road markings and signs. The year 5 and 6 students learnt so much from their CARES experience. Thank you to Ms Cash for organising such a wonderful, practical excursion.

Leadership Workshop

Today our eight school leaders attended the leadership workshop at Brookvale Public School with leaders from all schools in the Northern Beaches Learning Alliance (NBLA). The workshop was a new initiative organised by the NBLA principals. The leaders heard from four guest speakers; Eve Clark (Live Life Well @ School), Jules Bellamy (Coastal Environment Centre), Michelle Walsh (Headspace) and Kriszta Kovacs (Personal Trainer) and are now embarking on a sustainable school project they can work on together. Our leaders worked collaboratively and enthusiastically. This is a fantastic opportunity for our leaders and we are excited to see their project come to fruition and the positive change in brings within the school. Watch this space!

Easter Hat Parade – A Huge Success!

We would like to sincerely thank all the parents, carers, extended family members and friends who attended our annual Easter Hat Parade. Students K-2 thoroughly enjoyed making hats with their buddy classes and enjoyed parading them in front of a familiar audience. I would also like to thank Miss Sussanna and Miss Pembroke for their brilliant organisation. I hope you enjoy looking through the photos from the day.
