Principal’s Report

It has been a big week with all our Kindergarten students now moved into their new classrooms. KT has moved next to the canteen, KS and KB are now located on the back oval. Thank you to Mrs Speight, Mr Dylan and the Kindergarten teachers for all their work in moving these classrooms.

A special thank you to Penny Dixon, who spent most of last Friday at school organising the new uniform shop, and to all the parents who helped with the move last Friday and Saturday. Our new uniform shop is now located behind the canteen and will open this Friday for business. We are still requiring volunteers in the shop and now with the increased space, air conditioning and efficient ordering system, volunteering should be a lot easier. If you are able to help out on a Friday from 8.00am please email some dates you are available and your contact details to: manlyvaleuniformshop@outlook.com

Thank you to Mrs Poole and Mrs Baleisis who packed up and relocated the Teacher’s Resource room as well. The 4 old demountables will be removed this coming weekend.

On Friday 23 March a large crane will be delivered to the school from 3.30pm. The crane will be used to remove the old classrooms. Any students who are attending the Afterschool Care program are encouraged to use the back entrance to exit the hall and the gate next to the canteen so to avoid the crane.

Harmony Day - Tuesday 20 March

Last Tuesday all students were encouraged to wear a “Splash of Orange” and bring in a gold coin. Harmony day is a day to celebrate cultural diversity and support an inclusive Australia. The gold coin donation will go towards purchasing an additional flagpole for our new school so that we are able to fly the aboriginal flag. Thank you to all the students and staff who participated in the day.

High School Expression of Interest forms

Last Friday was the closing day for all the high school expression of Interest forms. Please make sure you have returned the form to the front office as choices of placements are now being entered into our system.

Zone Swimming Carnival

Yesterday 36 of our swimmers competed at the Zone Swimming Carnival at Manly “Boy Charlton” pool. Thank you to Mrs Birrell and Mrs Ward who accompanied the team and congratulations to all our swimmers on their sportsmanship and support of each other on the day. Results from the day will be published next week.

NAPLAN online practice

This week our Year 3 & 5 students completed a run through of the NAPLAN online organisation. Thanks to Mrs Blackband and Mr Dylan for organising a successful practice.

https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

The NAPLAN tests for all year 3 & 5 students will be from Tuesday 15 May through to Friday 25 May. Year 5 will do all their tests online however year 3 students will still be handwriting their writing papers this year.

School Council AGM - Monday 26 March

Next Monday will be our School Council AGM. All nomination for positions will close this Friday 23 March. Roles that are up for re-election are president, secretary and 2 parent representatives. Parents are also welcome to attend meetings but are unable to vote unless elected to one of the above positions.

Earth Hour - this Friday

As part of our school’s environmental programs we will participate in Earth Hour this Friday from 11.20am- 12.20pm. During this time the school will operate with limited power, no electricity will be accessed by classrooms during this time. Thank you to our SRC environmental committee for their organisation of the day.

PSSA Winter Trials - this Friday

This Friday 23 March will be the first day of the winter sports trials. Sports available for students to trial are:

Rugby league, Netball, Soccer

If you are trying out for rugby league and soccer, you will need to bring mouth guards and shin pads for the day.

The trials for these sports will take place over the next few weeks. Summer competition recommences in term 4 of this year.

Easter Hat Parade - Thursday 29 March

The K-2 students will be making an Easter hat with their buddy classes over the next week in preparation for the parade on Thursday 29 March at 2.30pm. Only the K-2 students will be parading, with their buddies from years 3-6 cheering them on. All parents and grandparents are invited to watch the parade on the Thursday. Class Coordinators have been emailed the details of the materials and arrangements for the making of the hats.

Bus Issue - Opal Cards

Please make sure your child has an Opal card in order to catch the bus. The only indication of the quantity of students catching the bus in the morning and afternoon is the swiping of the opal cards upon entering the bus. The buses are very over-crowded but numbers are not being truly represented as most of the children aren’t using opal cards. It is difficult to petition for additional buses with no evidence of the amount of over-crowding currently being experienced both morning and afternoon.

Parking and Traffic

Lahey Constructions have now purchased a bus to carry construction workers to the site from a distance away. This should alleviate the current lack of parking and traffic congestion around the school. Rangers have been patrolling in the afternoons and many parents have been booked for illegally parking. Please take care when driving and parking close to the school and avoid the car park at all times. U-turns and reversing should not be done on the corner of Gibbs Rd and Sunshine St as it is very dangerous when children are crossing the car park and pedestrian crossing.

School Fees

Thank you to all the families who have already paid the school fees for the year. As a few of the programs have already begun it would be appreciated if payment could be made as soon as possible. Part payment or instalments can be made at any time. For all families who have paid their full year’s fees by the last week of term, their names will be put into a raffle to be drawn on Friday 13 April to win movie tickets for the holidays.

Well Done Kindergarten!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Firstly, I would like to thank the parents and carers who have sent through photos of their children’s lunch boxes and delicious lunch box recipes. Please keep them coming!

I would like to congratulate KB, KS and KT on their smooth transition into their new classrooms. It was a big upheaval for our Kindergarten teachers, but with the support of their colleagues, they ensured their students remained settled throughout the move. KB, KS and KT children have embraced their new classrooms and are enjoying their new learning space.

I would like to also thank the parents and carers who offered support leading up to the move. We truly appreciate your ongoing support. Together we can conquer anything!

Carol Speight - K-2 Assistant Principal

Harmony Day

On 21 March Manly Vale children observed Harmony Day, where diversity within our community and respect for others are qualities we celebrate at Manly Vale Public School.

Kindergarten children will hear the book “I’m Australian Too” by Mem Fox (PRC K-2 #3841) and Years 1-2 will hear and discuss “Hello!” by Tony Flowers (PRC K-2 #22296).

Damaged Books

Occasionally library books are returned to the library in very poor condition, after being issued in good condition. For example we have had a number of books returned sopping wet. If the book cannot be repaired then a charge will be issued for a replacement copy. You will receive a note indicating the replacement cost. Please make this payment to the office. Thank you to the families who have followed through so promptly.
