Forensic Incursion
Last Monday we had a very special incursion which Stage 3 attended. It was a specialist team that created a crime scene in the hall and the children were able to work in groups to solve the crime using forensic investigative science. Teachers and students all enjoyed the day and it was a great launch to our science programs for the year.
Class Coordinators 2018
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to be Class Coordinators this year. Last Tuesday we had our first meeting for the year to discuss the role and talk about the upcoming events for the school.
Class coordinators communicate fundraising events, class activities and excursion requirements, give reminders about upcoming school events, organise class get-togethers and generally are the link between home, school and P&C communications. These volunteer parents do this job around their own work and family commitments so please be mindful of how and how much, you communicate with them. Please use the class coordinator for communication about events not as a person to give messages to your child or teacher when you are at work. This role does not replace formal communication to the school or your teacher. A signed note to the teacher about changes in arrangements and permission to attend events is still required. The Class Coordinator is not the “complaints” department. If you have any concerns about the school, class or events you must forward your correspondence directly to the school or make an appointment with the executive staff members or class teacher.
All school communication will go out through our weekly newsletter “Bush Telegraph” on a Thursday or through the Schoolzine App or through email communication from the school. The Class Coordinator will only be used for P&C events and class business.
School Photo Day
Today we had our whole school photo day. The photos are a snapshot of your child’s journey through their school life. We use Advance Photography a local company and family business that has been in the business for many years. It is a difficult day for students, teacher and photographers as it is hard to get all children to smile and some children do not enjoy the experience. As we don’t have satisfactory covered areas or indoor venue it can be difficult to get group shots but we always endeavour to do our best. After feedback last year, children were left to do their own hair for the photos today if they wished too.
Clean Up Australia Day
Tomorrow we will have “Clean Up Manly Vale Public School” day. All children will be led by our year 6 students to collect and clean up the rubbish around the school. The year 6 students will then sort the rubbish and report back to the SRC their findings in the aim to reduce the amount of packaging students use for lunches and lead into some environmental initiatives including “Waste-Free Wednesday”. You may send gloves in with your students if you wish.
Leadership Camp
Next Monday our year 6 leaders will attend the annual leadership camp at Collaroy Plateau. Our leaders will work with other school prefects from local schools to develop leadership skills and train them to lead each of their school’s SRC. Thank you to our leaders Dakota Birch, Kyan McDougall, Sarah Hills, Carter Sengchanh, Cleo Lovell, Tobias Twidale, Lucy Scholtens and Charlie Kanu who will represent us at this combined school’s camp.
P&C Meeting - Tuesday 13 March
Next Tuesday we will have our 2nd P & C Meeting for the year. All parents are welcome to attend this meeting beginning at 7.00pm in the staffroom.
The Magic Flute - incursion
Next Wednesday 14 March all students will be treated to a performance of the Magic Flute by Opera Australia. All students have been participating in music appreciation lessons in the lead up to this fabulous show. The show will be shown to all students in our school hall. The cost of the incursion will be invoiced in our school fees which will be out next week. Please be prompt with payment.
School Council AGM - March 26 – 7.00pm
At the end of this month we will have our annual general meeting of school council. All positions will be declared vacant. If you wish to stand for a position please collect a nomination form from the office and complete it. All nominations must be completed by Friday 23 March at 3.00pm. All roles including president, secretary, and parent representatives will be declared vacant on the day and all voting members of the council will be asked to vote on the nominations.
School Construction Update
We will be relocating the Kindergarten classrooms up to the oval on the 19 March. KT, KS and KB will all be moved to 2 new classrooms and the current science classroom at the top of the oval area and behind the canteen. The old demountables will be removed after 19 March and sent back for refurbishment. This is to allow the new hall and canteen to be built for our new school.
Our uniform shop will also be relocated to behind the canteen in a temporary construction site shed so that a power base can be built where the current uniform shop now stands. This will occur in the next school holidays.
The school holidays from Monday 16 April through to Friday 27 April will once again be a time for a lot of construction work. The school will not be able to be accessed again during this period and the OSHC holiday program will be cancelled and relocated to surrounding schools for these 2 weeks. We are sorry for any inconvenience this will cause and suggest making alternative arrangements for care during this time or ringing Primaryoshcare 0430 369 288 for local availability.
Tick Alert
There has been some reported cases of ticks. Please be vigilant about checking your children for ticks.

Positive Learning Environments
Dear Parents and Carers,
I cannot believe we are already half-way through our first school term! On my daily visits to Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 classrooms, it has been an absolute pleasure to see students actively engaged in a range of activities including literacy and numeracy group rotations.
Every classroom is filled with incredible writing work samples, maths displays and vibrant artwork. It has also been pleasing to see students participating enthusiastically in outdoor learning spaces. I would like to sincerely thank our team of dedicated teachers who have collaboratively ensured that every child has had a positive start to the school year.
Providing students with a range of differentiated activities to ignite their curiosity, challenge their knowledge and consolidate their learning is an important part of the K-2 classroom. We look forward to all students continuing to display settled behaviour and adhering to class and playground expectations.

Forensic Incursion
On Monday students in years 3 to 6 all took their turn to be called upon as new Manly Vale Public School Forensic specialists as part of a program that brought classroom science to life. Each took on the role of the Forensic Scientist to help solve a crime. The workshop was called ‘A Case of Discovery’ and was about an Auction House robbery where a gang of thieves make off with rare coins, gold and jewellery. The police needed the help of our young Forensic Scientists to track down the suspects and recover the missing items. Students examined the crime scene, took their own fingerprints, created coin impressions, built a DNA model, cracked a safe code, ran litmus tests for poisons and much more during the investigation.
The students all had a great time and Bob the senior detective in charge of the case said that Manly Vale Public School was in very safe hands after seeing so many young justice seekers at our school.

Clean Up Australia Day for Schools
Australia has one of the best natural settings in the world. From our perfect beaches, prehistoric forests and flourishing marine life, we have some of the most unique flora and fauna. Friday 9 March 2018 is Clean Up Australia Day for Schools.
Students from Manly Vale Public School will be doing their part to clean up the school on Friday morning after assembly. They may bring in some gloves and a re-used plastic bag to school to help them if they wish.
If you want to part of our fight for a healthier environment and stop rubbish getting into our streets, parks, beaches, waterways and other rubbish hot spots try to make everyday a Clean Up Australia Day for our beautiful school and all of Australia.
