Principal’s Report
This week we had the first of our Parent Information Evenings with stage 3 on Tuesday night and kindergarten tonight. These nights are a great opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher and learn the expectations for the year. The kindergarten night begins at 6.00pm in the hall and we would appreciate it if at least 1 parent could attend tonight.
Our stage 3 night was well attended and we had Christine Del Gallo (principal of Mackellar Girls Campus) and Paul Sheather (Principal of the Northern Beaches College) attend the evening to talk about the changes to enrolment procedures for the local high schools. It is important that all parents of year 6 students are aware of these changes and are able to complete the Expression of Interest forms correctly.
Next week we have the stage 1 Information night on Monday 26 February at 6.00pm, followed by the stage 2 Information night on Tuesday 27 February at 6.00pm. Thank you to all those parents who have volunteered as Class Coordinators for their class and a special thank you to our new P & C president James Fewtrell who attends all the nights.
Class Coordinators- Meeting Wednesday 7 March 3.15pm
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to be their child’s class coordinator. All parents should have typed in their contact details so that a class contact list can be created so as to notify you of upcoming fundraising and community events. Kristen Te Pania (mother of Rueben yr 1 and Pipi yr 4) will coordinate all the communication to class coordinators. Our first Class Coordinator meeting will be Wednesday 7 March at 3.15pm in the tech room.
At this meeting we will outline the expectations of the role, hand out contact lists and talk about events for the year.
Gym program- Rumen Marinov
Last Thursday our gym program beagn for the year. Every class in the school has 12 weeks of gym instruction from our professional instructor Rumen Marinov. The first 12 weeks our senior classes 4/5H, 5W, 5M, 6D, 6L, 4K and 4B will have gym on Thursdays for 40 minutes. Students are encouraged to wear sports uniform that day.
Dance 2018 – Mrs Lyn Orrick (K-2) Hip Hop (stage 2), Dancesport (year 5), Dancesport (year 6)
It will be an exciting year of dance this year with some significant changes to the program.
Mrs Lynn Orrick our professional dance teacher has been taking our Kindergarten, year 1 and year 2 classes for dance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These dance lessons follow our school curriculum and will lead into a dance concert at the end of term 2.
Congratulations to all the children who auditioned with Miss Panetta for the school dance ensembles. The girl’s dance group and boy’s hip hop group will both perform at the K-2 concert and at the Sydney North Dance Festival at the end of Term 2.
Stage 2 will participate in a Hip Hop dance program in Term 2, whilst year 5 only will compete in the Dancesport Challenge (Ballroom Dancing) in Term 2-3, and year 6 will complete a Dance To Be Fit program leading into their year 6 graduation at the end of the year.
These programs will be invoiced as part of the whole school program.
School Council- AGM 26 March 7.00pm
Last Monday night our School Council met to discuss the various roles in preparation for our Annual General Meeting on Monday 26 March 2018. The School Council runs in conjunction with the P & C but separately focussing on involving the school community in the planning and management of Manly Vale Public School. It aims to foster closer links between school and community so as to provide high quality education for our students.
Currently our standing members are:
President- Miranda
Markezic
Secretary- Louise Stedman
Community representative- Yorick Sweetnam
Teacher representatives- Patrick Dylan, Sarah
Humphreys
Principal- Tina Lee
Parents representatives- Damien Pincus, Ian Hills
(P & C rep)
Non-voting representatives- Adrian Ciano, Richard
John, Stephen Hancock
All roles above have to be elected by the current voting members of the School Council other than the community representative which is appointed, and the P & C representative which is elected by the P & C. The School Council meets once or twice a term in the evening. All parents are able to come along to a meeting and observe but only the voting members can vote on actions for the Council. All nomination forms are available from the front office and need to be returned to the front office by Friday 23 March.
SRE and SEE
Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) started yesterday. The classes go from 9.00am – 9.35am every Wednesday morning. All classrooms on the school site are used to house the various classes including 7 Ethics classes, 7 Catholic classes, 5 Protestant classes, 1 Baha’i class, and 3 non-scripture classes. All classes are supervised by the Manly Vale Public School teaching staff but lessons are conducted by representatives from the various religious groups (Catholic, Protestant, Baha’i) and with the Ethics classes volunteer parents from our school take these classes.
Unfortunately there is a waitlist for some Ethics classes as there is a size limit of 22 student per class and there are no additional classrooms to house extra classes. We are sorry for any inconvenience. If you wish to learn more about these classes please go to our website and read the policy under the school documents section. Thank you to Mrs Poole who does an amazing job in setting up these classes and to Mrs Davison in the office for putting the class lists together. It is a major organisation. Please notify the school in writing if you want your child to change from their existing arrangements. Changes to classes can only happen at the end of each term.

PSSA begins Friday 23 February
Tomorrow PSSA sport begins for our 3-6 students. Please make sure your child wears full sports uniform, hat and protective gear for their various sports. Lunch orders are not encouraged for PSSA students as buses do come early and there isn’t time to get lunch orders eaten. It is sometimes easier for children who travel to sport to eat their home packed lunch at recess. Please make sure students apply sun cream and bring water bottles for sport.

How Help Your Child Experience a Smooth Transition to School
Children often struggle to adjust to the start of a school year after having spent quality time with their families in the school holidays. It can be particularly overwhelming for our new Kindergarten students as they adjust to their new surroundings and routines.
As educators, we advise parents and carers to do a quick drop-off. It can pull at your heart string as a parent to see your child upset, but once the hand-over to your child’s teacher or another caring educator has been made, students tend to settle pretty quickly, as long as their parents are not in sight.
Please trust that your child’s wellbeing is our main concern. We look forward to working collaboratively with all Manly Vale families throughout the year.

Stage 3 Surf Education Excursion
Last Thursday 15 February stage 3 had a wonderful time at Manly Beach practising their surf skills. The excursion followed an earlier talk provided by the instructors from SEA Australia who visited Manly Vale Public School in week 2. The weather was glorious and the water conditions perfect. Our students were given opportunities to develop their skills paddling on boards, duck diving, sand running, ocean swimming and body surfing. The year 6's even got to tried board rescues which was exciting!
Congratulations to every student who tried the activities on the day. Some were quite challenging but it was inspiring to see everyone trying to extend themselves and have a go.
Thanks a lot to the stage 3 teachers for their organisation and for getting so involved.
