Principal’s Report
Schools Spectacular
Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the Schools Spectacular “Own The Moment” concert at Sydney Olympic Park. What a night it was! Ms Panetta took 13 of our senior dancers including Jonathon Levingston, Georgia Fullarton, Lucy Sheffield, Livia Vieira Ramos, Himaal Ramdam, Carter Sengchanh, Jude Pincus, Dakota Birch, Taylor Davies, Mia Carrier, Jacques Carrier, Kyan McDougall and Sarah Powe to perform in the “Imaginarium” segment of the production. They did an amazing job as leprechauns in this primary school segment. The show will be televised on Channel 7 on 16 December. The students will always remember being a part of this major production with over 5000 students participating. Thank you Ms Panetta for you commitment to the dance program and for accompanying the students over the many days of rehearsals and shows.
Thank you Morning Tea
It was a pleasure to host a morning tea for all our volunteers yesterday. We as a staff wanted to acknowledge and thank all the parents and community members who help out in the classroom, canteen, uniform shop, with fundraising events, assist on excursions, teach Ethics and scripture in the school, work in Café Owl on Fridays and support the teachers and students with many hours of volunteer time. If you weren’t able to attend please accept our thanks and gratitude for all that you do. Volunteers allow us to run many additional programs at the school.
Year 5 Leadership
This time of year we prepare our year 5 students for leadership positions within the school. There are many positions year 5 students are able to stand for including class manager, school leader, librarian, SRC representative and house captain.
This week our final 16 students who have been nominated by their peers to be leaders in 2018 have written speeches and delivered them to years 3-6. Voting has taken place by all students from years 3-5. The final 8 students will be announced tomorrow at assembly with school captains and vice captains being announced at the Celebration of Learning assembly on Wednesday 6 December. I’d like to acknowledge all of the year 5 students who bravely stood for school leadership positions this week. House captains will be elected at house meetings next Thursday 7 December. Class manager and other leadership positions will be elected in the New Year. Thank you Miss Phillips for your organisation of the leadership process.
The final SRC handover assembly will take place on Monday 4 December where the 2017 leaders will pass their jobs to the 2018 new 8 leaders. Parents are welcome to attend the handover.
Choir Performance - Estia Nursing Home
Today our choir walked to Estia Nursing Home to perform for some of our elderly community members. The visit was truly appreciated by all the residents and the choir performed beautifully. Our choir has had an amazing year and represented the school on many occasions. Thank you to Mrs Lucey and Ms Mason for continuing the wonderful work Mrs McManus started with them at the beginning of the year. The choir will finish their year with a performance at the Celebration of Learning assembly.
Minifest - Friday 1 December
Tomorrow will be our annual Minifest event run by our year 5 & 6 students. This is the only day of the year that lollies are permitted at school. It is a one off. The stage 3 students design fun activities for all the school and prizes are awarded to students as they rotate through a variety of activities including sponge throwing, rob the nest, basketball challenge, obstacle course, water fun games and many more. All proceeds from the day go towards a gift to the school from our year 6 students. It is also a day that finalises our “buddy” program for the year. No nuts are permitted as prizes, and most of the prizes will be sent home after the event. Please notify your class teacher if you do not wish your child to consume lollies on the day.
Celebration of Learning - K-2-9.15am/3-6-11.00am - Wednesday 6 December
Our final formal assembly of the year will be on Wednesday 6 December. Parents whose children are receiving awards have been sent an invitation to attend the assembly. All year 6 parents are also invited to the last assembly. Unfortunately our school hall doesn’t hold a large amount of people so we ask that you keep invitations to 2 (maximum) per family. Tea and coffee will be available between the 2 assemblies for those parents who have to attend both.
Congratulations Mrs Lexi McDonald and husband Nick
Lexi and Nick McDonald welcomed Asher Nicholas McDonald into the world on Tuesday 21 November. He was 4.93 kg and 60 cm long. We at Manly Vale were all very excited to learn the news. Congratulations to the McDonald family.
Farewell
We will say farewell to Mrs O’Grady at the end of the year as she takes leave and then proceeds into retirement. Mrs O’Grady has been a much loved and respected teacher and Assistant Principal at the school.
Mr Guzman will also take up a new position at Forestville Public School and I wish to thank him for his contributions to stage 3 this year. Mr Guzman also started our first rugby league team at the school, which was enjoyed by many of our boys. We wish him all the best in his new school and for his upcoming wedding at the end of the year.
Ms Leigh Davison also leaves us at the end of the year to go on maternity leave but we hope to see her back as a relief teacher in the near future. Thank you Ms Davison for your contributions to Stage 1 this year.
Classes for 2018
It is always a time of change at the end of each year. Class configuration is always done with care and consideration for every child. Although friendship groups are one of the considerations when making the classes it is not as important as the following:
- Special needs placements
- Boy/girl ratio
- Children who work well together
- Cluster grouping for gifted students
- Even distribution of academic abilities
- Social and behavioural considerations of some students.
Classroom teachers know your children by the end of the year. Please refrain from sending letters to request teachers or friends for your children. In a majority of occasions teachers know the best placement for your child. Reduce anxiety about next year by having a great holiday and not discussing school, classes or teachers. There will always be new staff, classes and friends at the beginning of each year.
Art Expo - Thursday 7 December & Friday 8 December
There will be a children’s art exhibition outside the year 1 classrooms on 7 & 8 December. Students who have been involved with the extension art program will have their work displayed for all to view on these days. Please feel free to take the tour before school or at the end of the day and view our talented artists’ work. Thank you Mrs Speight and the “Art Shack” crew!
Band
Thank you to all our band members who have been busking at Café Owl the last few weeks. It has been well received by all. Our band will be having their Christmas Party on Thursday 7 December in the school hall after the concert. It will be a great way to finish up the year and celebrate the many performances and achievements of the band this year. Thank you to our Band Committee John Logan, Mel Corner, Jo Poulos, Manuela Curzon, Helena Edgerton for their organisation and our band conductors Ben Dickson and Gergely Malyusz for their musical leadership and guidance of the band program in 2017.

New School
Today we had a full school and site evacuation drill and lockdown practice. These WHS procedures are practiced on a regular basis to make students familiar with emergency procedures should we require them. A school Information Booth will operate tomorrow morning 1 December at 8.00am-9.00am outside Café Owl if you wish to ask any questions about the current construction.
During the school holidays starting on 18 December, major works will take place all over the school grounds. A letterbox drop is currently being done to neighbours to inform them about the proposed works. There will be a trench dug through the school to provide services to the construction site and most of the playground will be inaccessible for the public. Any asbestos that is currently being contained on site, will be removed in total to start the new year. Our school oval will also be resurfaced.
Our Before and After School Care facility is to be relocated to classrooms (2E & 2B) outside the canteen, and the canteen will be used for their kitchen space. Families will be kept informed of changes to this service over the holidays as closures may take place from the 8 January. If you are requiring holiday supervision please make contact with our provider at mvoshc@primaryoshcare.com.au as they have some alternative spaces in local schools.
Students and community members will not be able to use the school through most of the holidays.
Pink Stumps Day - School Cricket team
Our school PSSA cricket teams and Mr Bennett have once again taken on the fundraising event of “Pink Stumps Day”. The teams will play a fun match on Friday 8 December at David Thomas in order to raise funds for breast cancer research. If you wish to make a donation to the day:

Year 6 Graduation Assembly - Wednesday 13 December
Our year 6 will have a formal assembly on Wednesday 13 December at 1.30pm in the school hall. All year 6 parents are invited to attend. Thank you Mr Guzman and Mrs O’Grady for all the work and preparation you have put into these final celebrations. It is always a sad but exciting time for our students and this assembly along with the Graduation dinner on Thursday 14 December, is a wonderful way to say our last goodbyes.
Last day – Friday 15 December
Our last day of school will be on Friday 15 December. We will clap out our current year 6 students at approximately 2.40pm. Final SRC Handover
On Monday 4 December the 2017 leaders will perform their last SRC duty and hand the Student Representative Council leadership over to the new 2018 school leaders. On behalf of the school, I would like to acknowledge and thank the 2017 leaders for all their hard work this year. The SRC has been instrumental in some fabulous initiatives taking place. Together the leaders and school community have fundraised successfully for Heart Kids and Sathi our sponsor child from Bangladesh. The leaders have ensured their year 6 committees have run smoothly and have been fabulous communicators to their peers. The year 6 class managers of 2017 have also worked diligently to support and mentor their K-2 SRC representatives and should be acknowledge for their positive work with our infants classes.
Congratulations PSSA Newcombe Ball Team
On Friday 17 November our Newcombe Ball B team participated in the PSSA Grand Finals. Our team players were enthusiastic competitors but unfortunately lost on the day to Harbord. The students received their patches at assembly last Friday. Thank you Miss Kemp for your coaching and extra practises to ensure our Newcombe ballers were match ready each Friday.

Stationery Packs
The Humphreys stationery packs have now been finalised. A note will be sent home on Monday outlining the items necessary for classes next year and the ordering process you will need to follow. There is no obligation to purchase the packs from Humphreys but it is crucial for your child to have all items on the list. The packs will be delivered in the first week of school and these will be distributed by year 6 and their teachers. You may order up until the cut-off date to have the packs delivered on the ‘school allocated’ delivery day. This a fundraising initiative and all proceeds raised go towards the school creative arts budget.
NAIDOC Serpent
During Education Week each 3-6 student painted a stone reflecting on work in class about Aboriginal language for family and what that means to them. Together we created an installation artwork of a serpent and had all 3-6 students lay their stone on the serpent. The artwork has been placed in the garden bed near the office surrounded by beautiful native plants. Thank you to Mrs Abrahams for organising the serpent artwork and thank you Mr Lee for designing the garden.

The next meeting on Tuesday 5 December is the last for the year and we will be hearing about, and voting on, the programs the school would like P&C to help support next year so come and find out where the money that has been raised will go.

Band News
What a fantastic year it's been! Thank you to all the band members who have worked so hard and improved enormously, it is a pleasure to hear you all play. And a huge thank you to all the parents who have brought them to practice, supported the performances, baked cakes and transported instruments, we couldn't do it without you! It's so close to the end of the year - and a well-deserved holiday - so just a couple more performances:
Busking - Thank you to all the students who have stood up to perform and busk at school! The feedback has been wonderful, so positive from everyone who has had a chance to hear you. Only a couple more weeks to catch these stars perform outside Café Owl.
Tuesday 5 & Wednesday 6 December - Celebration of Learning rehearsals and assembly. Please bring instruments in for both bands on both days.
Thursday 7 December 6.45pm set up for 7.00pm start - our End of Year Concert in the hall. All children will perform, as well as willing junior band parents. It's our celebration of the year and refreshments will be provided at the end (if you are able to bring a slice/cake/anything please let Mel know andyandmel@gmail.com).
All music folders will be handed in at the end of the Concert on 7 December so please rub out any pencil writings etc. If you are not able to attend the concert, please be sure to hand it in at the end of Celebration of Learning on 6 December. Thank you.
Finally, the biggest thanks must go to Ben and Gergely who have worked so beautifully with the students to shape them into the best band musicians they can be. And to Lisa Philips and Kate Stacey, also Sally Fisk, who have given so many voluntary hours, unpaid, to organise us, get permission forms out and in, give up hours and weekends for camp, supporting performances and all the other essential things that go on behind the scenes. You have been amazing.
Thanks everyone! See you at the party.
