Principal’s Report
Where has this year gone? Here we are just about to complete our final Kindergarten Orientation program and move into another year.
Congratulations Ms Mason and 2E
Last Friday Ms Mason and her class 2E were presented with an award for their high achievement in the touch typing program “Typing Tournament”. 2E came 1st in NSW in the Term 3 challenge and 3rd in the world for their age group in typing. The class was presented with an award and then filmed for a training video for the company. It was a very exciting morning and a great achievement for the class. Touch typing is definitely a skill required for all students who will be sitting the NAPLAN tests over the next few years.

Year 5 Dancesport Confidence - Thursday 19 October
Our 15 finalist couples from our year 5 Dancesport program will compete at Homebush sports ground this Thursday 19 October at 6pm. Doors open for parents at 5pm. Please get your tickets by following the link below for this event.
https://events.ticketbooth.com.au/event/dancesport-confidence-macquarie-park
We wish all our couples all the best in the competition on Thursday night and look forward to seeing the video of their performance at a later date. Please parents make sure you have arranged for your child to get home with someone else if you are not attending on the night.

Littlescribe Expo - Friday 20 October 9.30am
This Friday all of the students from Manly Vale will have their published stories on display in the hall for all to view. “Littlescribe” is an app trialled at the school which allows students to write stories and share them digitally with friends and family all over the world. We were very lucky at Manly Vale Public School as Mrs Alexi Macdonald (teacher) and Ms Jenny Atkinson (parent) jointly designed the app and launched it at the school. Littlescribe has generously donated 1 book per child for publication. Please come along and view some of these beautiful pieces of writing this Friday in the school hall.
Car Park use
Please refrain from using the car park for pick up and drop offs. Even if your child goes to before school care the car park is now a dangerous place for children. All deliveries to the construction site are happening outside of school hours so trucks are coming and going through the car park continually in the early mornings. As the car park is now the main access to the building site we would ask that no parents use it for parking or drop offs. You cooperation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Kindergarten Orientation – Tuesday 24 October 9.30am
Our final session for 2018 Kindergarten Orientation is on Tuesday 24 October (next week). This will be our final session with the children going into the current Kindergarten rooms and Mrs Carol Speight, one of our Assistant Principals will speak to parents in the hall and hand out “school readiness information,” along with talks from the current before and after school care manager Romina and our canteen supervisor Lisa Lougher. It is imperative that all parents and students come to this final session. After this session interviews may take place with some of the parents of our younger students to discuss whether the children are ready for school next year. If you have any concerns about starting your child please make an appointment with Mrs Speight or Mrs Lee over the next few weeks.
Kindergarten 2018 Parent Social Evening - Wednesday 25 October 6.30pm-8.30pm
This evening will be hosted by our current P & C parents. The current Kindergarten teachers will speak at this evening and there will be time to socialise with other parents coming next year as well as ask advice from our current P & C parents. No children are invited to this evening. Wine and cheese will be served.
Kindergarten 2018 Picnic day at Manly Dam
On Wednesday 15 November there will be a short get together for our new Kindergarten students down at Manly Dam. We meet at 10am near the play equipment playground and have a picnic and some time together to get to know each other. We are usually finished by 12.00. It is a very casual get together and you just bring your own picnic and drinks. Mrs Speight and Mrs Lee will be there to meet with you all.
“Smoking Ceremony”
Last Wednesday, Uncle Laurie Bimson performed an aboriginal smoking ceremony for the children of Manly Vale Public School. Uncle Laurie is a Guringai descendent and currently works for Guringai Aboriginal Tours. He used Yellow Bloodwood leaves to smoulder and performed a “Welcome to Country” for the children. The smoking ceremony was to cleanse the site and ward off bad spirits. The Manly Vale children then sang our school song. It was a wonderful experience for the teachers and students and we thank Uncle Laurie very much for his time. Uncle Laurie has offered to do an aboriginal carving for the opening of the new school next year.

Bahai Scripture – Thankyou
Every year the Bahai scripture teachers and students put on a thank you morning tea for the teachers. The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the Bahai scripture group for this kind gesture.
School Spectacular
Our 12 students who are representing us at this year’s School Spectacular are:
Carter Sengchanh, Kyan McDougall, Mia Carrier, Sarah Powe, Taylor Davies, Himaal Ramdam, Jonathon Livingstone, Jude Pincus, Jacques Carrier, Lucy Sheffield, Georgie Fullarton and Livia Viera Ramos.
It looks like it will be a grand occasion at the new venue of Homebush Sports Stadium. Thank you to Ms Natalie Panetta who has given the children the opportunity to dance in such an extravaganza. We wish them all the best for their preparation for the show on Friday 24 November and Saturday 25 November.
Congratulations Zara Lee and Mia Lougher
Zara in our current year 4 class has been offered a place in the Opportunity Class (OC) at Balgowlah Heights Public School next year. Mia Lougher has also made the reserve list for Mona Vale Opportunity Class next year. We congratulate them both on achieving such a high academic standard this year and wish them every success if they take up these positions next year!
Congratulations Mrs Fraser
Mrs Jordy Fraser gave birth to Ivy Adelaide Fraser last Sunday. Mrs Fraser and her newborn baby are both doing well. Ivy was 3.58 kg and 51 cm. We wish her and her husband Paul all the best.
Congratulation Ms Buckley and Mr Guzman
Ms Tegan Buckley has just got engaged to her partner David, and Mr Guzman has just announced his engagement to his partner Evelyn. We wish them all the best for their upcoming wedding plans and preparations.
Playground Changes
During the holidays we tried to clear some more play area at the back of the school hall and administration building to make up for the loss of oval space. Unfortunately during the clearing process a few segments of asbestos were found so the whole area has now been fenced off and covered until the asbestos can be removed by specialists in a holiday period next year.
To allow the children more play space we will now move the years 3-6 students down to David Thomas reserve for lunchtimes following the timetable below.
Monday and Wednesdays - Stage 3 students to David Thomas
from 12.30pm-1.40pm
Tuesdays and Thursdays – Stage 2 students to David Thomas from
12.30pm-1.40pm.
This will allow our K-2 children to have full access of the playground at school. Please note the days above especially if you intend to pick up your child for a lunchtime appointment. You will need to come to the office first to sign them out then go down to David Thomas for a pick up. Sports shoes may be worn on these days.
Information Booths
- School Information Booth - Café Owl this Friday 20 October- 8am
- Community Information Booth - Thursday 19 October 5pm-7pm @Manly Seniors Centre, 275 Pittwater Rd, Manly
These information booths are set up for you to ask questions and find out information regarding the building process. Please feel free to come to either information booth advertised above.
School Directions Workshop - Wednesday 25 October 2pm-3pm (Hall)
We are currently evaluating our last School Plan (3 year) and preparing to write a new one for 2018-2020. Many of the directions of the school are discussed at P & C and School Council meetings which a lot of parents find difficult to attend. Over the next few weeks I will be running some workshops in the school hall on an afternoon before pick up for parents who wish to make contribution to the school plan and/or ask questions about the school and other school business matters (including updates of construction impact). Please feel free to pop in on the afternoon before pick up.
Congratulations Maru!
One of our Year 6 students Maru Jedeloo Conroy rode 50kms in the Spring Cycle last Sunday and raised $1121 for Monica’s Doggie Rescue. We are all very proud of her achievement and congratulate her on such a tremendous effort for charity. Well done Maru!

Assistant Principal’s Report
Selective High School
All year 5 students received a note last week regarding Selective High Entry for 2019. The note was an ‘intention to apply’ and needs to be sent back to school to inform us that your child is applying. Once your slip has been received a booklet outlining the entire process will be sent to you. Please consider carefully whether your child should apply as a lot of work goes into the process and only suitable candidates should sit the tests. Please see myself or Mrs Lee if you require any advice on the process or your child’s suitability to sit for selective.
Congenital Heart SRC Fundraiser
Next Thursday, 26 October, the SRC have organised a fundraiser for congenital heart disease that has touched several families in the school. All children are invited to wear mufti clothes for the day and are asked to bring a gold coin donation. During the morning session students will come with their class and be asked to lay their coins in the heart outside the uniform shop. Please give generously to this charity that the SRC voted on supporting.
Band Warringah Mall School Showcase
Both Junior and Senior Bands will be performing at Warringah Mall on Tuesday 7 November in the School Showcase Concert. Please ensure all term 4 band permission notes have been returned to school as soon as possible. We will be travelling by bus to Warringah Mall and will be leaving school around midday and returning by 2:30pm. More specific details will be sent out closer to the date. All parents are invited to attend and it would be fantastic to have a huge Manly Vale audience at the Showcase.
Remembrance Day Service
All year 5 & 6 students will walk to Manly Dam on Friday 10 November to join in the Remembrance Day Service. Grace Nairne (School Vice-Captain) will present a speech on the day war struck Sydney Harbour. Please ensure your child has a water bottle and their hat. Parents are welcome to attend the service although seating is limited.

Digi-Ed Claymation
Years 5 & 6 had a great day participating in the Digi-Ed Claymation Movie Making incursion. All students worked in small groups to create animation movies with clay figures. Groups wrote interesting narratives containing an orientation, a complication and a resolution. The final products were amazing and demonstrated the creative and imaginative minds of our students. Each student received a copy of their films and should be congratulated on their great work. Thank you Mr Guzman for organising Digi-Ed.

Musica Viva
On Monday 16 October Manly Vale had the pleasure of welcoming a performance from Musica Viva. K-6 students enjoyed a performance by Zeeko.

Stage 3 Canberra & Snow Excursion 2017
Late last term, our year 5 & 6 students visited Canberra and the snow on their annual school camp. Mrs O’Grady, Mr Guzman, Mr Dylan, Mr Chapman and Ms Phillips attended and were extremely impressed with the behaviour of our senior students.
We received many compliments at the various Canberra attractions about the knowledge of our students of their capital city. The trip included the High Court, Old and New Parliament House, Questacon and the War Memorial. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Every student participated in the exhibitions with well-mannered enthusiasm. Lots of information was learnt to support their civic and citizenship studies in 2017.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards costs. The rebate will be paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 4, this year has flown by and it has been lovely to get to know all your children over the past 3 terms. We are very excited to announce that we have a new Assistant Co-ordinator, Tayla O’Brien. We have also hired some new educators to join our lovely team here at Manly Vale, Taylor and Mitch.
Vacation care was fun packed with lots of activities and fun, the children were surveyed and the results showed that they loved Clifton Gardens, Rock Climbing day, Sports Day, Captain Underpants and Dinosaur day. We are currently putting together our Dec/Jan program. Your feedback would be appreciated; a survey will be sent out over the next week regarding close times during the Christmas holidays.
