Principal’s Report
Last Monday Jonah Goh and Talia Stedman represented the school at the Bear Pit Public Speaking finals at Parliament House. Congratulations to both students on winning the school On Your Soap Box Competition then going onto to represent Manly Vale Public School at this prestigious competition. Mrs Humphreys praised their outstanding performances.
Congratulations also to Zara Lee who represented our school at the finals of the Multicultural Public Speaking final last Tuesday.
Principal for the Day
Last Friday Harper & Toby Hamilton assumed the role of principal as part of an auction item prize at the school’s trivia night. Both boys addressed the assembly, visited classrooms and attended the PSSA finals. A highlight of the day was morning tea with the executive staff and their friends.

Congratulations PSSA Boy’s soccer teams
Last Friday our Senior A and Junior A teams met Beacon Hill Public School in the grand final. The Junior A conceded goals quickly in the first half but came back for a more competitive second half, after a motivating team talk from Mrs Cash. Unfortunately the juniors went down 4-0 but had a fantastic season and should be proud of their efforts. The Senior A team was too strong for Beacon Hill Public School though defeating them 4-0 and winning the premiership. All the boys played extremely well and really worked as a team. Congratulations to Mrs Cash as the coach for making yet another grand final with her soccer teams. Special mention to Gregory John who made the state PSSA soccer team again this year.
Debating
Our school debating team of Maya Gado, Ella Mc Avoy, Ingrid Harding and Ben Crowe competed at Narraweena Public School against the Narraweena Sunflowers in the final of the Premier’s Debating Challenge last Tuesday. They have had a very successful year winning all their debates (4 out of 4) against the local schools. Congratulations on their successful year and thank you to Mrs Fraser who coached the team and to Ms Phillips who accompanied them last Tuesday.
Book Week
This week is Book Week. Mrs Poole has arranged a wonderful week for all the students to celebrate our theme “Escape to Everywhere”. All the students (and teachers) enjoyed the opportunity to dress up in their favourite book characters for the day on Wednesday. Our author visit from Frances Watts and illustrator David Legge for the K-2 students was a highlight of the day, and everyone enjoyed shopping at the Book Fair this week. Thank you to Mrs Poole and our library monitors for organising this great event for the school.
Band Solo Nights
Next week we will have our Band Solo Nights on Wednesday 30 & Thursday 31 August. These nights are a great opportunity to hear our Band members perform individually as they play a piece of music on their own to the audience. A gold coin donation is all that is required to watch the performance so feel free to come along and support our band members.
Fathers’ Day Breakfast - Friday 1 September
We would like to invite all our fathers to breakfast at the school on Friday 1 September at 7.15am onwards. You can order bacon and egg rolls by visiting the link below that will be made fresh on the day. After breakfast with your children feel free to visit classrooms and chat to teachers.

School Council Meeting
Last Tuesday our school Council met to discuss the update of the new school, various policy updates including the Ethics and scripture policy (now on the website), traffic survey, noise and air quality monitoring during the construction of the new school, and directions for the new school moving forward. Thank you to all the members of the school Council who attend these meetings and contribute positive ideas and suggestions from the community.
The building process began this week with Lahey constructions putting up the start of the fencing. Possum boxes and preservation procedures will be put in place over the next few weeks. Thank you to our local Manly Dam Bush Care group who have been collecting and preserving flora over the past 2 Fridays to be kept down at the dam for future use in the school and local area.

A Community Information Booth will be held at Manly Vale Community Centre in Lovett St Manly Vale on 5 September from 5.00pm-7.00pm.
Kindergarten Orientation 2018
Our Kindergarten orientation program begins on Monday 11 September. Please make sure you have completed an enrolment form and handed it into the office if you have a child starting next year. We also have a School Tour on Thursday 31 August at 10.00am for interested families.
Car Park hazards
Please do not park in the car park next to the school. It is full most days with teacher’s cars and tradesman and delivery vehicles. It is very dangerous to have parents using the car park for drop off and pick up points as children are crossing the entranceway to get in and out of school at that time. As the new school development begins there will be a full time traffic controller on the car park and parent access will not be allowed (except if you require the disabled parking spot). Please choose to park away from the school and walk, as this is the safest option for all.
P & C Meeting - 12 September
At the next P & C meeting we will have a report from Mrs Aga Banham on our gifted and talented programs within the school. The P & C have generously donated money to our Higher Order Thinking programs, and purchased STEM and STEAM resources this year. Mrs Banham will give a brief presentation on the benefits of the program.
Stage 3 Camp to Canberra - Monday 4 to Wednesday 6 September
Year 5 & 6 students will consolidate their learning on government as well as have a great time away in the snow with their friends. Mrs O’Grady, Ms Phillips, Mr Guzman, Mr Dylan and Mr Chapman will all be accompanying the students. Please make sure that all students have warm clothes and their own set of ski (snow) gloves for this trip. All medical notes and payments should be in by now.
Choir Performance at the Opera House
Our school choir will be joined by many other schools in the Arts Alive Choral Concert at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday 7 September. Please ensure that all permission notes and payment are sent into Mrs Lucey. The choir will be at the rehearsal all day accompanied by Mrs Lucey and Mrs Abrahams and then perform in the evening concert.

Tournament of Minds (ToM)
On Sunday our two Tournament of Minds teams will compete at Roseville College. Both teams will present a long term challenge which they have been working on for six weeks and both will be given a spontaneous challenge to solve on the day. Team 1; Arthur Hewitt, Lucy Sheffield, Lucy Scholtens, Mia Nethery, Mackenzie Jeffs, Sam Romeo and Zara Lee have worked collaboratively on the Social Sciences challenge and team 2; Kevin Wang, Ben Crowe, Mia Lougher, Poppy Pickering, Charlie Kanu, Kate Scholtens and Joshua Galang have been working together on the Maths Engineering challenge. We congratulate both teams on all their extra hard work and wish each team the very best.
Band
It is time to start our band recruitment for junior band 2018 and encourage year 2 students to join our band program. The current junior band will perform for year 2 on Tuesday 29 August at 9:00am and will demonstrate all of the instruments and discuss crucial information about joining band and all that it involves. Our conductors Ben Dickson and Gergely Malyusz will be coordinating the junior band recruitment process and we look forward to all year 2 students wanting to participate in our fabulous band program. On Monday 4 September there will be a junior band information night for all interested year 2 families to attend. The information night will start at 7:00pm and take place in the school hall. The junior band will perform and the conductors will provide necessary information about the band program and will be available to answer any questions.
All band students should have received term 3 permission notes and be returning those this week. The band solo nights are being held on Wednesday 30 August and Thursday 31 August. All students have been allocated to perform on one of the nights and showcase their musicianship skills. All parents and caregivers are invited to attend the solo nights to provide a supportive audience and celebrate the achievements of each student. The solo nights are starting at 7:30pm in the school hall. All performers need to be at school at 7:15pm to set up their instruments and warm up. We are looking forward to two wonderful nights.
All families are invited to support our band program by heading to Bunnings Balgowlah on Sunday 10 September 8:00am onwards to buy a cake. All band families will be busy baking cakes to sell as our major fundraiser for the year. We thank the parent volunteers in advance and appreciate all those who attend to buy a cake. Thank you Mel Corner for organising the stall. If you would like to volunteer please let Mel know.
Choir
The Manly Vale Choir will be performing at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday 7 September for the Arts Alive Choral Series. The students have been working hard all year to learn their music under the guidance of Mrs McManus, Mrs Lucey and Miss Mason. They have already attended a rehearsal at North Sydney Girls High School and are all set to sound amazing on the Opera House Stage. Well done Choir for all your hard work and we wish you all the very best for your big performance!
Premier’s Debating Challenge
Congratulations to our year 6 debating team who won four debates against four schools this semester. The team became zone finalists and competed in the zone finals which took place on Tuesday. The debaters had a difficult debate against the Narraweena Sunflowers. Unfortunately we lost the debate as the affirmative team stating that the ‘government should give overweight children money as a reward for losing weight’. Congratulations on your amazing results and efforts this year Ben Crowe, Ingrid Harding, Nora Gado and Ella McAvoy. Thank you Mrs Fraser for your hard work and training of the debating team.

PSSA Soccer Grand Finals 2017
Last Friday was the windy and nail biting end to our season of fun and competition in Soccer.
The junior boys had a hard game and put up a strong fight. Beacon Hill were the better players on the day but our juniors had an inspiring and most enthusiastic season which showed a strong foundation for seasons to come. The seniors played exceptionally well and demonstrated their experience and maturity as a team. They won 4-0 in an exciting game. Thank you to all boys for a fun season. Your dedication and commitment to your sport is amazing. I think the essence of "team" sport and working together holds many lessons for life! Thanks to parents for assistance at games and at training. See you next time!
Lisa Cash
PS please return shorts and jerseys to your coach ASAP!
Athletics Carnival 2017
Thank you to all the parent helpers, students, spectators and staff for their wonderful involvement at the Athletics Carnival on Monday 7th August. The carnival ran smoothly and quickly which is all thanks to the amazing teachers who are very supportive and fantastic team players. We would like to extend a special thanks to all the parents that were involved in helping out with timekeeping and judging on the day. Your efforts are hugely appreciated and we couldn’t have done it without you. Also, a massive thank you to the parents who helped organise and prepare food for the mini-canteen throughout the day.
The weather was on our side again. Participation from the children was excellent and it was wonderful to see so many students getting in and having a go. Their behaviour was, as always, exemplary and true to Manly Vale Public School standards – well done to you all!
Ribbons and announcement of the winning house will be at assembly this Friday morning. A note has been sent home with children who are to attend the Zone Carnival on either Wednesday 30 August or Thursday 31 August.
Congratulations to all the children who participated.

Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition
On Monday 21 August, the 'On Your Soapbox' finalists, Talia Stedman (3/4W) and Jonah Goh (5F), represented Manly Vale Public School in the annual Bear Pit public speaking competition run by our local MP James Griffin at Parliament House. Talia and Jonah each delivered an excellent speech and are to be highly commended for their efforts. The competition was tough and while we didn't walk away with the winning trophy and plaque this year, we certainly walked away with a valuable and memorable experience. Congratulations Talia and Jonah for your fantastic efforts in representing our school.

On Tuesday 22 August, Zara Lee (3/4W) represented not only Manly Vale Public School but also our local area at the Regional Finals of the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition run by the Arts Unit at Lewisham Public School. Gifted and Talented (GATS) – Higher Order Thinking (HOT) update
Science Festival
On Friday, 11 of August Mr Dylan and I accompanied 27 students to attend the Science Festival at the Australian Museum. The students had an amazing time engaging with various experiments and listening to interesting scientific presentations. The feedback from the students was very positive and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Science Festival review by Morgan 3C
On Friday some year three and four children went to the Australian Museum. First we had a look at animals that have come from different countries, they weren’t alive. Then we made our way to the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs were so interesting. We watched a video of the T-Rex and touched the bones of a T-Rex! There were other things that were cool too, like fossils, eggs, crystals and chemical reactions, light shows, reptile patting zoo and we got to touch ancient animals.
But my favourite were the stands. We made cool stuff and I liked it because we got to do our own thing! I got a picture with Albert Einstein with his real skin. The highlights of the day… Did you know that if you stick a rock to your tongue and it sticks it is actually a fossil? We also learnt that there are two types of fossils: trace fossils and body fossils. Did you know that a leaf is a body fossil because plants are living things? This was the best excursion I have ever been on!

‘Out of Box’ Problem Solving workshop
The GATS committee was pleased to invite 40 stage 3 students to a problem-solving workshop held in the school hall. The workshop was delivered by Inquisitive Minds and the Mathematics Association of NSW (MANSW). Students from Loreto Normanhurst joined Manly Vale for the day. Students from both schools were engaged and committed to solving complicated maths problems for four hours! To our astonishment, many were disappointed when it was time to pack up. Debbie and Derek from Inquisitive Minds explained problem-solving strategies and helped students along the way. Students shone the brightest when the problem-solving relay was on. It was pleasing to see that many students saw this as an opportunity to learn rather than a competition that they must win. Of course, we were delighted to see Manly Vale students winning the overall competition anyway.
In the afternoon, the Manly Vale staff attended a professional learning workshop by the Inquisitive Minds team. The staff engaged in collegial discussion about problem solving and strategies to implement in the classroom. They were extremely competitive and excited to participate in the problem solving competition too.
Here is what the students said when reflecting upon this experience.

STEAM workshop ‘Big Day In’ at Redlands
Stage 3 students were given a unique opportunity to take part in a STEAM workshop, ‘Big Day In’ at Redlands School. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Students were asked to apply those domains to creatively solve a given problem. The learning was very engaging and valuable as it developed critical and creative thinking and collaborative skills.
During workshops, students were building collaboratively functional community buildings in Minecraft Education virtual reality space. They were communicating effectively and solving problems as they arose.
Our second workshop was ‘F1 in schools’ and students were listening to experiences of Boeing and F1 engineer as well as watching a demonstration of the ‘F1 in schools’ program. Selected students had an opportunity to launch a mini F1 car and race against the other school team.
Lastly, Manly Vale students were involved in a charitable activity on behalf of Solar Buddy Charity. Students built a portable solar light that was destined for Ethiopia’s remote schools. These schools often have no access to a reliable source of electricity, and therefore students are not able to complete their homework due to a lack of light. Each light, accompanied with a student letter, will be delivered to a student in a remote school to help them do their homework and school work. Manly Vale students were very honoured to play a small part in improving a quality of education for students in Ethiopia.
STEAM Big Day In by Georgie 6G
On Tuesday 8 of August a group of students went to Redlands to do a course. We participated in activities about science. We learned about how cars are made and how air capsules work. For technology we used Minecraft as an example and the teacher showed us different features. Engineering was exciting because we learned how people make and design cars that they use to race. In art, we had learned about how people design creations and the materials they use. For maths, we guessed how quickly the cars would go and who had the quickest reaction time to start their race.
The highlight of the day for me was making LED lights for kids in other countries. The kids who got the lights weren’t able to have lights. Over all it was a fun, educational and an enjoyable day.
STEAM Big Day In by Oliver 6G
In my opinion the day at Redlands School was fascinating. It was very exciting to work together on a Minecraft project and I liked how we raced cars. The presenter told us about how wings on planes work. In the last lesson we were asked to make little LED lights. It was lovely to give people lights in Africa who don’t have any electricity. It was very thoughtful.

Dear Families,
This term we have been focusing on the Health and Safety of the children in the centre. This has included reminding them about how to prevent the spread of germs to each other by ensuring we wash our hands properly and covering our face when we sneeze or cough. We have also reintroduced the use of toilet passes, so that we can better monitor how many children are using the bathrooms at a time. Emergency procedure practices will be conducted throughout August, to ensure all children are aware of how evacuations and lockdowns run.
Re-enrolment for next year is approaching and will be done online through QKEnrol. Please ensure you have created your QKEnrol login and have entered the correct enrolment details. If you are having any issues with this please let us know so that we can help you to fix it before enrolment time.
