Principal’s Report
We had a terrific start to the week with our annual athletics carnival. Although a very windy day all the students enjoyed the opportunity to run against their friends and compete in the 100, 200, 800 and House relay events. Our K-2 students joined us at 10.30am for their 70 metre races. A big thank you to our House captains for their enthusiastic chants and cheers and organisation of their Houses. Thank you to Mr Dylan, Mrs Humphreys and Ms Sussanna and Mrs Davison in their organisation of the two carnivals and to all the teachers and parents who helped out on the day. Also a huge thank you to all the volunteer parents who made cupcakes and manned the stall.

Open Day – Education Week
Last Wednesday 2 August we had our Open Day for the school. Band and dance groups kicked off the performances at our picnic lunch followed by our Kindergarten singing, and drama and choir performances. Open classrooms were a great opportunity for parents to see what their children are doing in class and the Book Fair run by Mrs Poole is always a highlight. Thank you all the parents who attended this great afternoon.
Kindergarten 2018
Our Kindergarten orientation program starts on Monday 11 September at 9.30am. Please complete an enrolment form which can be downloaded from the website and return to the office as soon as possible. We currently have enrolment forms from 45 children for next year with 80 students who have completed an expression of interest earlier this year. We would like to have confirmed numbers so we can organise another demountable for next year.No out of area enrolments will be taken which has been the policy for the last 10 years at the school.
Principal for the Day
On Friday 18 August Mr Toby and Mr Harper Hamilton will be sharing the role of principal of Manly Vale Public School for the day. They will be addressing the assembly and visiting classrooms. This was an item won at the Trivia Night auction. Mrs Lee is looking forward a day of rest!
NAPLAN Online
We will be trialing the NAPLAN online with our year 3 & 5 students in the last week of term beginning Monday 18 September. This is only a trial run so as to test our school’s technology services in preparation for 2018 NAPLAN. There will be 2 1-hour tests done completely online but no results will be published or used from this trial. Practice tests and information are available by visiting the website through the link below:

P & C Meeting
Last Tuesday night we had our first P & C meeting for the term. The P & C donated $65,000 to the school over the past year to cover and provide support in classrooms including the employment of Mrs Banham to run all our gifted and talented programs, provide the Reading Recovery and teacher mentoring program provided by Mrs Speight, the purchase of new library books and resources. The purchase of additional laptops for classrooms and providing new playground resources for our “Kindyland” playground including the sand pit cover and sporting equipment for PSSA teams.
Thank you to every parent who supports the fundraising within the school by attending events and to our volunteers who run the uniform shop, Café Owl and the canteen which provide a regular income for the school.
New School
Last Tuesday we had our start up meeting with Lahey Constructions who will be building the new school and Coffey the project management team. They will begin pre-construction work next week to set up the site.
Bushlink came to the school yesterday to assist in the collection of some seedlings from the nature area to be relocated to the front office garden.
Dan our senior environmental scientist and ecologist will be talking to the children today about the sustainable practices that will be occurring on the construction site during the build including the:
- Relocation of animals including the Pygmy Possum. Nesting boxes are to be placed on vegetation islands within the next week or so.
- Animal escape routes through the fences.
- Selective clearing of ground vegetation to provide an asset protection zone.
- He will be present daily to advise construction and be on site daily for the first 3 weeks to ensure the environmental management plan is followed.
There will also be a group of Bushcare workers collecting seedlings from our nature area on Friday to be kept to for the new environmental area in the new school. The new school will have a new nature area and strong environmental focus.
Traffic management will be done as per the DA with tradesmen and contractors parking away from local streets and carpooling to the site. They will be onsite from 7.00am. Daily meetings with the school will take place from next week.
Information booths will be advertised in the Manly Daily with local residents and neighbours to be notified by a letter drop next week regarding the start of the building process.
Neighbours will be informed with up to 4 weeks notice as to when any removal of asbestos will occur. All asbestos removal will be strictly done in accordance with the workcover and environmental rules and a specific management plan will be followed. There are no dangerous chemicals on site during the build.
Aboriginal Smoking Ceremony
After a visit and a site walk with our local aboriginal education officers David Lardner and Stacy Parry, an aboriginal “smoking ceremony” performed by Uncle Laurie Bimson (local Guringai man) will be done to commence the start of our new school. Uncle Laurie will do a welcome to country and aboriginal smoking ceremony within the next few weeks for the children and community of Manly Vale Public School.
Sickness
We have had a lot of sickness at school these past 2 weeks including chicken pox, whooping cough and a vomiting bug. Please keep your children at home when they are sick as it is very easy to pass on these viruses in a school setting. Many of our teachers have also been sick. Please remind children to wash their hands.
Fees
We are still outstanding a lot of school fees at this stage. Some parents are choosing not to pay certain categories of fees which only puts pressure on school funds to cover them. For example, CAPA levies paid for the buses to and from the dance concert, our dance teacher Mrs Orrick and various craft and art items required for classrooms which are not covered by government funding. Please pay all your school fees promptly so that these valuable programs we offer are kept for next year. Term reminders will be sent out next Monday.

Open Day
We hope you had a wonderful day celebrating education week with us and thank you for attending and being a part of open day. It was fabulous to have so many friends and family join us for a picnic lunch and an audience to watch our talented students play in the bands, dance, sing and perform. I think you will agree our NAIDOC presentation was unique and respectful and our installation artwork is exquisite. Thank you again for attending.

Our tournament of minds (TOM) groups are meeting regularly on a Thursday afternoon and throughout the week preparing to present their response to their TOM challenges. We wish them the very best at the end of August for their challenge presentation day.

‘On Your Soapbox’ Public Speaking Competition
On Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 August, Manly Vale held its 2017 ‘On Your Soapbox’ public speaking competition. It was a highly successful assembly where students, parents and teachers were able to watch two representatives from each K-6 class present their speeches at the ‘On Your Soapbox’ assembly.
It was clear to see that the standard of public speaking has taken a giant step forward at Manly Vale due the fantastic display of public speaking talent presented by the speakers. They were all so passionate, enthusiastic and confident about their topics and I congratulate all of them for the amount of effort and dedication each and every one of them put in to prepare, practice and deliver their speeches. Well done especially to the Kindergarten students who showed great bravery and courage by speaking in front of a large audience perhaps for the very first time.
One student from Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4) and one student from Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) were selected to represent our school at the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition at Parliament House on Monday 21 August. I would like to congratulate Talia Stedman from 3/4W who delivered a speech on the topic ‘Why we should use paper bags instead of plastic’ and Jonah Goh from 5F who presented a speech on the topic ‘Manners Matter’ for being our selected speakers. We wish the students all the best and know that they will do Manly Vale proud no matter the result.
Once again, congratulations to all the finalists who represented their class at the competition - we are all very proud of you.

Annual BayRun 2017
On Sunday 6 August, Pipi & Reuben Te Pania represented Manly Vale Public School in the annual BayRun which is a Primary OSH Care sponsored event. Pipi finished 17th out of 231 girls and Reuben was the youngest runner to compete in the 2km race. Pipi & Reuben have raised over $1000 for their chosen charity Bear Cottage, an outstanding effort by both of them. Mrs Ward, Mrs Humphreys, Miss Kemp & Mr Bennett were also sporting the Manly Vale Public School colours as they successfully completed the 7km race.
