Principal’s Report
Welcome back to everyone after the holidays and I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful weather. This term is certainly another busy one with Education Week, Science Week and Book Week.
Drama Group - NIDA
This week our school drama group Dakota Birch, Santiago Barrios Rincon, Phoebe Crowe, Josh Galang, Morgan Andrews and Matilda Graham will be performing at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art). Their performance is called “Balancing Act.” After a very successful technical rehearsal last Tuesday they will perform on Thursday night to a live audience. Good luck to our drama group. Thank you to Ms Jaala Kemp for her writing, producing and directing of this performance and for her dedication to drama within the school.
Education Week - next week
I would like to invite all parents, grandparents and friends of Manly Vale to join us for our annual Open Day on Wednesday 2 August at 1.00pm. We will have a picnic lunch together on the back oval whilst listening and watching performances from our band, dance groups and choir. Open classrooms will follow directly after the performances.
Farewell Mrs Elaine McManus
It is with great sadness and regret that we will farewell Mrs McManus this week. Elaine has been at Manly Vale Public School for 7 years and is a dedicated, warm and compassionate teacher. She has taught many students at Manly Vale in a variety of classes from Kindergarten to Year 5. She has been a soccer coach, choir conductor, member of School Council, a dedicated classroom teacher and a passionate advocate for student wellbeing on our learning and support team. Her tremendous sense of humour and fun is a great addition to any staffroom and school environment. Mrs McManus returns to Scotland to be with her family during her mum’s illness. She and her husband Andrew have decided to return home with their children Eve and Michael. We wish them all the best in their move back home and thank Elaine for her positive contribution to Manly Vale Public School students, parents and teachers.
Her last day at school will be our school’s Open Day next Wednesday 2 August. Mrs McManus will be replaced by Ms Rebekah Mason for the remainder of the year. Welcome Ms Mason to Manly Vale.
ICAS English - Tuesday 1 August
Next Tuesday we will run the ICAS English test during class time. Students who are sitting the test should come to school with a 2B pencil. All students who have paid for the test will participate during the morning session.
Unfortunately the ICSAS Science papers have been lost in the post and unless they turn up will not be marked this year. We apologise to all the children who sat this test but unless the papers miraculously turn up no results will be available for that test.
NAPLAN Online Readiness test - week 10 of this term
Manly Vale Public School will take part in the NAPLAN online readiness test in the last week of this term. The results will not go towards this year’s rankings as the test is solely designed to prepare schools for the online delivery next year. Students in year 3 & 5 will sit the test on a laptop or desk top computer and the format of the test varies according to how they answer the initial questions. The questions do get more difficult or easier according to how well the student performs on the questions. The students will be doing practice test during class time and it is recommended that they practice the tests at home. The link below will take you to the practice tests.
https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/naplan-online/naplan-online-public-demonstration-site
Next year all students will do NAPLAN online as part of the assessment process. Year 3 students will be exempt from the writing test in 2018 to give students time to practice their touch-typing skills.
Band Camp
Last weekend 54 students stayed at Camp Kedron to practice and prepare for their upcoming band performances. The weather was beautiful and the students were able to enjoy the bush land setting whilst participating in tutorials and band rehearsals over the weekend. They also enjoyed the games room, volleyball court and archery lessons, which were a welcome break to the hours of rehearsing. A very big thank you to Ms Phillips who coordinated the camp, to Ms Stacey who helped with supervision, Ben and Gergely and the tutors for their expert tuition and supervision and to all the parents who helped out with cooking, supervision and clean up. The concert on Sunday reflected the tremendous gains each student made over the weekend.
Problem Solving Workshop - Inspiring Minds
Next week a group of selected students will participate in our problem solving workshops. The workshops will take place in the school hall. Ms Phillips and Mrs Banham will be facilitating the workshops, which will be run by “Inspiring Minds” which is endorsed by Mathematics NSW. This program is part of our Gifted and Talented program. The presenters will then take all the teachers from MVPS through a workshop after school.
School Choir
Our school choir will be performing at the Opera House later this year in the Arts Alive Choral Concert. It is great privilege to perform at such a wonderful venue in front of a very large crowd. Their first rehearsal for the performance is next Thursday 3 August at North Sydney Girls High, Mrs Lucey and Ms Mason will accompany the choir to their rehearsal and prepare them for their first professional performance later this year.
Our school choir has also been asked to open the Police Youth Club at Dee Why on Friday 11 August at Dee Why. Congratulations to our choir as their reputation spreads to our local community.
Athletics Carnival - Monday 7 August
We will have our annual athletics carnival at David Thomas oval on Monday 7 August. The whole school participates in this event. All students 8 years and up will participate in the competitive carnival, whereas most students in Kindergarten, year 1 and 2 will participate in a fun carnival on the day. Detailed arrangements for the carnival will come out next week.
Inessa Jackson is looking for someone to coordinate a cake stall on the day if you are able to assist please contact Inessa (inessam@gmail.com). We also need parents to bake cakes for the day and help out with the selling of cakes. Please let Inessa know if you can assist with the stall in any way.
Bear Pit Finals - week 4
Currently all students are competing in class heats for our school public speaking competition. The finalists from each class will present their speeches at our On Your Soapbox assemblies on Tuesday 8 August (K-2) and Wednesday 9 August (3-6). Congratulations to all students for the preparation you have put into your speeches and your confidence in presenting a speech to your peers.
P&C Meeting - Tuesday 8 August
Our next P & C meeting will be on Tuesday night 8 August at 7.00pm in the staffroom. All welcome.
New School
This term will see the commencement of the new school build. We have had information booths all this week at school and I hope you have had a chance to pop in and discuss any concerns you have regarding traffic flow during construction, fencing, security and dust and noise monitoring. The next Information booth will be at Café Owl on Friday 4 August. Please follow the link below for regular updates to the information about the build.

Kindergarten Orientation
Currently we have 35 enrolment forms and 70 possible enrolments for 2018. It looks like we may need to order another demountable classroom so it is imperative that we have all enrolment forms so as to confirm numbers as soon as possible. Our first Kindergarten Orientation morning is on Monday September 11 at 9.30am. Our next school tour for any new families will be on Thursday 31 August at 10.00am.
Ethics Classes (SEE)
Next term we will run a trial Kindergarten Ethics class. The class will be for the first 25 students who return the Expression of Interest note given to them this week. The note was only given to those students who had nominated their interest in Ethics at the beginning of the year. Thank you Inessa Jackson for all her work in coordinating Ethics within the school.
National Consistent Collection Data NCCD
This term we have completed the National Consistent Collection of Data for students with disability. This is an annual collection and a requirement of the Department of Education. The national data collection counts students who have been identified by a school team as receiving an adjustment to address a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (the DDA). More information about this collection can be found on our school website. Thank you to our Learning Support Teacher Mrs Karen Bellamy and the classroom teachers who have collected the data.

Education Week – ‘I Learn, We Learn’
Next week we are celebrating Education Week with our school Open Day and annual Book Fair. Education Week is a state-wide, annual event to celebrate public education in NSW. This year it is being held from 31 July to 4 August. The week highlights the achievements of public education and local schools, putting the spotlight on our students, our educators and the communities that support them. This year’s theme is ‘I Learn, We Learn’ and is a celebration of our schools’ commitment to ensuring; system-wide improvement, high expectations for all, personalised student learning, wellbeing and creating stronger ties with local communities.
Manly Vale Public School Open Day Program
Our Open Day is on Wednesday 2 August and I would like to invite all parents and caregivers to join the students for a picnic lunch on the back oval from 1:00pm. Whilst you are enjoying lunch the junior and senior bands will perform and provide lovely music for your enjoyment. At 1:30pm the girl’s ensemble and boy’s hip hop ensemble dance groups will perform, followed by a song from our kindergarten students. The K-2 students will perform a song learnt during NAIDOC celebrations and Ella McAvoy will present a speech and our 3-6 NAIDOC art installation the students have collaborated on will be showcased. Mrs Poole will officially open the Book Fair (books will be on sale from Tuesday 1 August to Thursday 3 August). Our school choir and drama group will perform in the hall and then all visitors will be invited to visit open classrooms and purchase books at the Book Fair in the tech room. We welcome all families to join us in celebrating public education and the wonderful things happening at Manly Vale Public School.
Multicultural Public Speaking finals
Congratulations to the school stage 2 and stage 3 finalists who presented their prepared and impromptu speeches for the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition at Collaroy Public School for the local finals on Wednesday 28 June. A special congratulations and mention for Zara Lee who won the stage 2 final and will be presenting her speech and another impromptu at the Regional finals on Tuesday 22 August at Lewisham. We wish Zara all the best in the competition as she represents Manly Vale.

On Your Soapbox Manly Vale Public Speaking Competition
At this stage all students should have presented their On Your Soapbox speeches in class and deserve a huge congratulations for their effort, hard work and confidence! This competition provides an excellent forum for students to learn and develop public speaking skills and is a reason the students at Manly Vale can progressively speak with confidence in front of an audience. This week, two students who met the speaking criteria best will be chosen to represent each class at the school stage finals. Only parents of the finalists are invited to attend the stage finals at the school. These will be held on Tuesday 8 August (K-2) and Wednesday 9 August (3-6). The class finalists will receive a note with further details of the stage finals including times. A stage 2 and a stage 3 representative will be chosen to deliver their speech at Parliament House at the Bear Pit Public Speaking Competition.
Band Camp
Congratulations to all junior and senior band campers for a fantastic weekend of music, play, fun, learning and excitement. The weekend was a huge success and the students learnt so much about their instruments and playing in their bands because of the tutorials and specific instrument workshops.
There are many people worked together to make band camp such a huge success. Firstly, I'd like to thank Ben and Gergely our amazing conductors for their leadership, musicianship and organisation. Ben organised all the tutors and worked tirelessly to pull the camp together. Thank you to parents, the band committee and parent volunteers who helped, supported, provided supervision and the most delicious afternoon/morning tea and came to the concert on Sunday. I would like to make special mention of Mel Corner, Helena Edgerton and John Logan who stayed overnight and were a tremendous help throughout the weekend. Mel Corner organised the most fabulous Saturday night entertainment with Junkyard Beats and the students will never forget the music they made using body percussion, buckets, plastic bags and pots & pans! Thank you Mel!
Lastly, a huge thank you to Mrs Lee for supervising and staying over at camp on Friday night and to Miss Stacey for supervising all of Saturday. Their support and help to ensure band camp ran smoothly allowed the weekend to be so fantastic. I'm sure the school community is looking forward to hearing our band perform at our school Open Day in Education Week on Wednesday 2 August.

Woolworth’s Earn and Learn is on again
Once again Manly Vale school will take part in the Woolworth’s Earn and Learn Program. They have teamed up with Modern Teaching Aids – Australia’s biggest supplier of resources for schools, to provide the resources for this amazing activity. The children at Manly Vale will receive 2 sticker sheets each to start them off. All you have to do is shop at any Woolworths store and for every $10 you spend, you will receive a sticker. When you fill up your sheet (60 stickers per sheet), bring it to school and place it in the box, which will be in the front office. The promotion starts on Wednesday 26 July and will continue till the end of term. The more stickers we have, the more resources we can purchase. In the past we have bought soccer goal posts, medical backpacks and various sporting equipment. Good luck and thank you for your continued support.

Dear Families,
We had an amazing two weeks of vacation care, providing many fun activities for the children through incursions and excursions, as well as our themed in centre days. Some of our favourites were Giant Inflatable World, where we raced around bouncy obstacle courses; EcoXplore, where we got to adventure around North Head in Manly and learn about our native Australian plants and their Aboriginal uses; and Pirates Day, spending the day on a treasure quest to find the hidden Manly Vale treasures.
Our vacation care enrolment was through the new MyFamilyLounge app, which will be the re-enrolment process for 2018 with enrolments commencing in term 3. Enrolment instructions will be available this term, and please let us know if further help is needed.
We hope to see you very soon!

Transport for NSW – School Travel Update
Information for parents, guardians and students
Our school has partnered with Transport for NSW to use the new online School Portal for endorsing school travel applications. You are now able to manage all your school travel needs online including applying for school travel passes and tracking the status of your application.
The application process has also been simplified so that a new or updated application for school travel passes is only needed when a student is:
- applying for a school travel pass for the first time
- requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).
- changing school or campus
- changing home address
- receiving an expiry notification
- repeating a school year
- changing their name
- requesting a new transport operator.
This means students who are progressing to year 3 and year 7 only need to reapply if they are changing circumstances.
Students who are not residents and are temporarily in Australia can also provide their visa subclass number and exchange program (if prompted) when applying online, making the application and approval process much faster.
Parents, guardians and students can apply or update their details online at:
http://www.transportnsw.info/school-students
If you do not have access to the internet contact 131 500 for assistance.

Slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash…..
In NSW there are thousands of buses that travel every day transporting students to and from school. Due to their size and mass busses they take more time to stop. Crashes involving buses often result in more severe outcomes for other road users.
The Centre for Road Safety is committed to improving safety around buses and is implementing a tactical school bus safety campaign. This is a reminder for parents and carers that they always need to supervise their children and hold their hand when walking to and from the bus stop or interchange and when crossing the road. In addition, parents should no call their children across the road as it could lead to dire consequences.
The law states that a speed of 40km/h applies if passing a bus when the front and rear lights are flashing as the bus is picking up and setting down school children. Please slow down to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing. This is for the safety of all students.
If you want more information on this campaign please visit the Centre for Road Safety link:
