Principal’s Report
May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy holiday. A very big thank you to all the parents who attended our annual dance concert this week, which was a great way to finish our school term and school dance program for 2017. Thank you to Ms Panetta and Ms Durazza who organised the concert and to Mrs Lyn Orrick our dance teacher for all her choreography and the putting together of the fabulous dance routines. Thank you to all the Class Co-ordinators and the parents who made and purchased costumes, and liaised between school and home to make sure everyone was ready for the big day. Thank you to Paul Sheather, Principal Balgowlah Boy’s Campus for use of the school hall.

Disco – Movie Characters
Last Thursday night was a great night for all our students as they dressed up as their favourite movie character and danced the night away with “Disco Andy.” Thank you to our year 6 teachers and students for their organisation of the evening and for all the teachers who stayed to supervise the night (and dress up). All proceeds of the money will go towards purchasing a gift for the school from year 6 and be presented at the end of the year.

Dance Ensembles
Congratulations to our Boy’s Hip Hop group and Girl’s Dance Ensemble on their performances at the Northern Sydney Dance festival over the past 2 weeks. They have been outstanding representatives of our school and the audience has really enjoyed all of their performances. Thank you to Ms Panetta and Ms Durazza for their commitment to the dance program in the school and for the extra hours of duty over the past few weeks.
Multicultural Speaking Competition - Stage 2 & 3
This is the first year Manly Vale Public School has entered the Multicultural Speaking Competition. Talented public speakers were given the opportunity to display their talents in a speak off last Monday 19 June (Stage 2) and Friday 9 June (Stage 3). This competition is a very difficult one due to the research required and the difficulty of presenting sensitive issues to an audience. Congratulations to the following Stage 2 finalists Pipi Te Pania, Phoebe Crowe, Talia Stedman & Zara Lee who presented their speeches last Monday.
Congratulations to Sarah Hills, Ophelia Shapter, Pipi Te Pania and Zara Lee for representing Manly Vale Public School at Collaroy at the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition yesterday.
Trivia Night - Saturday 17 June
Our annual school fundraiser was a great success again this year. Over 200 parents filled Mackellar Girl’s Campus hall to participate in the trivia night. The last update I had was that $20,000 has been raised for the school. This money will pay for the instalment of smart boards in our new classrooms, cabling to the Kindergarten rooms, literacy resources for Kindergarten to year 6 and the repairs to the shade cloth and sand pit covers as well as some outdoor equipment for the playground. Thank you to Penny Dixon and her team of volunteers (who feature later in the newsletter). The night was a great welcome to our new Kindergarten parents but a whole lot of fun for every other parent who attended. Reports that the dance floor was still full at 1.00am means that people had a great time. Thank you to Inessa Jackson our Class Coordinator liaison who rallied support from every class through the Class Coordinator system. It was great to see so many parents donating to raffles, making props and raffles for the night and offering to assistance with clean up. It was a real community event. Special mention to Kim Graham and James Fewtrell for hosting the evening.
Ken Dewell retirement
This week we farewell our General assistant (GA) Ken Dewell after many years of working at the school. Ken looks forward to playing more golf and spending time with his wife Sue. Thank you Ken for your commitment to Manly Vale Public School over the years. We wish you a very long and happy retirement.
Congratulations to Ms Fisk
Friday 23 June Ms Fisk and her partner welcomed a new baby girl into their family. Skye Diane Vieira was born at 8.56am weighing 2.215kg. Mum and baby are doing well. Mr David Chapman has taken over 5F for the remainder of the year. We welcome Mr Chapman to our wonderful school.

Band Camp
Please ensure all band camp forms have been returned as final preparations need to occur.
Balgowlah Boy’s Campus Band Performance
Thank you to the Balgowlah Boy’s Campus Band for their performance yesterday. It was a lovely afternoon treat after our dance concert and all K-6 students enjoyed listening to the boys perform. The boys performed several songs with various band configurations and hopefully inspired all our budding musicians.

NSW Government Active Kids Rebate
As you may be aware, during this year’s budget the NSW Government announced the introduction of the Active Kids Rebate from January 2018 – a voucher for every family in New South Wales who has a child enrolled in school from K-12.
Every child enrolled in school is eligible for the $100 rebate, and are redeemed through approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers.
The vouchers are intended to reduce the barriers for young people to participate in sport by covering wholly or in-part the registration or membership fees associated with sport and fitness providers.
You know as well as I that many of the children and young people in our communities are simply not meeting the required levels of physical activity in their daily lives, placing further burdens on their health that many carry into their adult lives.
More information will be available soon as to how this program will be administered by the Office of Sport via the link below and I will endeavour to keep you informed as the program develops.

Premier's Reading Challenge
The PRC has another two months to run! If you have been entering your child's reading log online this needs to be brought up to date. If you have had trouble accessing the online reading log please contact your child's teacher to confirm their school username and password.
A reminder that all kindergarten children are participating as a year group by sharing PRC titles in class and library sessions.
Notable book titles
Over the last few weeks of this term the children have shared some excellent quality texts in library time. During World Refugee Week, Kindergarten and stage one students were introduced to the concept by sharing Where Will I Live? By Rosemary McCarney. McCarney is the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. The images are photographs of children in real time situations, these generated excellent discussion about how displacement can effect children, and gave Manly Vale students the opportunity to reflect on how they could help.
Stage two students shared a 2017 CBCA shortlisted title, Out by Angela May George, this also deals with the refugee and asylum seeker issue. The story is written from the point of view of a girl and mother who have fled their homeland, they embark on a treacherous journey by boat to seek asylum. The story champions the power of the human spirit and the drive to find a better life.
The Fabulous Friend Machine by Nick Bland is another title shared this time from kindergarten through to year four. It deals in a very amusing way with a very relevant and serious issue of cyber safety.

P & C Trivia Night 2017
A very successful community event was held on Saturday 17 June – the annual Trivia Night! Once again, it seemed like the Manly Vale Public School parent community had been planning their outfits and meals for months – it was fantastic seeing over 210 parents dressed to the nines!!
Our best dressed prizes were independently and anonymously judged and boy it was tough!!! Best dressed male – Mr Squiggle, Best dressed female – Fairy Bread, Best dressed couple – The Redheads, Best dressed table – Team VB, Tried really hard – Ms Lamington and Best dressed overall – Mr Hills Hoist! Honourable mentions must include the streakers, the bogans, the convicts, the Richies, the Steve’s – actually….. everyone looked honourably mentionable!
Our MC, James Fewtrell and Trivia Queen Kim Graham worked the room seamlessly and Hurricane Eyes were fabulous in creating the great atmosphere, music trivia and rocking the stayers late into the evening. Never has there been so much competition seen building Sydney Harbour Bridges with dry spaghetti and mini marshmallows. Well done Minties! We all know you supported your engineering mate to win by a landslide in that challenge!! And so ended the Campbell Parade crews year-long bragging! They couldn’t defend their title. To the winners went the wine and chocolate spoils – and a year’s bragging rights! Chesty Bonds and Fairy Bread sharing the lead on 101 points! We shall hear the victory stories on the playground for a while to come!
Our amazing auctioneer Asha did a great job with a rowdy crowd taking 15 items under the hammer – raising about $3,500! To our gold sponsor Jac Watson of Ray White Balgowlah and our live auction donations received from Mrs Lee, Blackmores (Tracy Wolf), Nectar Cold Pressed (Jacinta McCombe), Starry Night Artwork (Peta Morris aka The Kid Creative), Armilla Jewellery (Dixons) and Manly Vale Public School for homework free weeks, dance concert tickets and principal of the day – these events just don’t happen without your generosity and willingness to be involved. Thank you.
The creative team out did themselves creating Aussie Icons vignettes wherever you looked and the Qantas Lounge saw many a super star grace its space! The hamper team out did themselves – again! 18 hampers garnered many silent bids – thank you to all those parents who donated a prize into the classroom or online – it gave us so much to work with! Thank you creative and hamper queens – you know who you are!! Our duty free crew and clean-up crew were amazing – I think we might be able to go back to Mackellar again next year! To make best use of some of the surplus we received from a very generous Masterfoods, we were able to stock up the canteen, the teachers, Stewart House and Mackellar with herbs and spices that we couldn’t use in the hampers. That was a real buzz being able to share that with our community.
In a large community thank you, every person who painted a prop, donated an item, bought a ticket, sponsored a table, helped with setting up and tidying up, made hampers, sent an email, promoted the event, took a payment, bid on an item, was asked to stand to be thanked. To see so many people in the room standing and acknowledging the huge effort it takes to bring an event like this together was fabulous – and inspiring to know we can all make our own positive difference with the limited time we have between work, kids, home and life.
Thank you for the opportunity to work with such a bunch of fun loving parents, dedicated staff and local business community focussed on doing the best for our kids at our bushland school.

Thank you to Sponsor and Contributors to the Trivia Night

Safety on Wheels
Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate. A helmet needs to be worn correctly to help prevent an injury. Check if your child’s helmet is worn correctly – Can you place just two fingers between your eye-brows and your helmet? Can you fit just two fingers between the buckled-up helmet strap and your chin? Do the straps join in a “V” below your ears? When riding a bicycle or scooter, the rider should wear light-coloured clothing so that they can be easily seen by others.
